Résumé:
Nothing in the whole of literature compares with ''The Master and Margarita.'' One spring afternoon, the Devil, trailing fire and chaos in his wake, weaves himself out of the shadows and into Moscow. Mikhail Bulgakov's fantastical, funny, and devastating satire of Soviet life combines two distinct yet interwoven parts, one set in contemporary Moscow, the other in ancient Jerusalem, each brimming with historical, imaginary, frightful, and wonderful characters. Written during the darkest days of Stalin's reign, and finally published in 1966 and 1967, ''The Master and Margarita'' became a literary phenomenon, signaling artistic and spiritual freedom for Russians everywhere. This newly revised translation, by the award-winning team of Pevear and Volokhonsky, is made from the complete and unabridged Russian text.

Résumé:
In light of the current political crisis around climate change, what can architecture possibly contribute towards a new planetary imaginary of our contemporary environment beyond environmentalism and technological determinism? Instead of conceptualizing the idea of the environment as purely natural and in need of protection, as solely a problem that needs to be managed, or merely as the Earth, which limits the scope with a scalar bias, can we speculate on architecture as a measure both to assess and to act upon the world? Architecture as Measure is an elaboration on this question, and on the disciplinary and cultural potentials of such a provocation. It positions climate change as a cultural and political idea that requires a renewed architectural environmental imagination.

Résumé:
Over more than two decades of writing, Aaron Betsky has used his knowledge of architecture and urbanism to argue for the ways in which buildings, cities and landscapes help us understand where we are, where we have come from, and where we are going. He argues for modernist design as a way of making ourselves at home in the ever-changing world of modernity. In At Home in Sprawl, using such disparate examples as California and the Netherlands, he offers possible building blocks for better sprawl. He also believes that buildings are no longer enough to make us at home in the modern world, and that architects must look beyond such structures to landscapes, interiors, and imaginary structures to find appropriate and critical architecture.

Volume—a word that refers to sound, collections, and the measurement of space—is a crucial characteristic of both graphic design and popular music. While expressing different aspects of these two pervasive cultural mediums, the term also introduces a discussion on their many links. This publication is a collection of both new and classic writings by frequent Emigre contributor and educator Kenneth FitzGerald that survey the discipline of graphic design in context with the parallel creative fields of contemporary music and art. The topics of the writings are diverse: the roles of class in design, design education, Lester Bangs and Creem magazine, pornography, album cover art, independent record labels, anonymity and imaginary creative identities, and design as cultural chaos-maker.

Résumé:
Over the centuries, maps have served many varied purposes; far from mere guides for reaching a destination, they are unique artistic forms, aides in planning commercial routes, literary devices for illuminating a story. Accuracy—or inaccuracy—of maps has been the make-or-break factor in countless military battles throughout history. They have graced the walls of homes, bringing prestige and elegance to their owners. They track the mountains, oceans, and stars of our existence. Maps help us make sense of our worlds both real and imaginary—they bring order to the seeming chaos of our surroundings. With The Curious Map Book, Ashley Baynton-Williams gathers a chronologically ordered variety of cartographic gems, mainly from the vast collection of the British Library

Résumé:
30 buildings from the 1970s and 80s, 30 built manifestos, densely gathered in two halves of a divided city: transformer station, hotel and airport terminal, diving tower, school, and animal laboratory. Not only do their functions and purposes differ fundamentally, but their forms and architectural means of expression are even more diverse. What distinguishes the architecture of these years is the search for a visualization of content beyond function: of fictions, themes and narratives, of history, typological continuities, and contradictions. While postmodern is the underlying formula, it does not result in a uniform “style”. The building forms are emblematic or rational, familiar or absolutely new. Claudia Kromrei presents these 30 buildings and describes them in their concrete form, their genesis, and against the background of the theoretical imaginary worlds of their designers.

Résumé:
In this book, Brenna Bhandar examines how modern property law contributes to the formation of racial subjects in settler colonies and to the development of racial capitalism. Examining both historical cases and ongoing processes of settler colonialism in Canada, Australia, and Israel and Palestine, Bhandar shows how the colonial appropriation of indigenous lands depends upon ideologies of European racial superiority as well as upon legal narratives that equate civilized life with English concepts of property. In this way, property law legitimates and rationalizes settler colonial practices while it racializes those deemed unfit to own property. The solution to these enduring racial and economic inequities, Bhandar demonstrates, requires developing a new political imaginary of property in which freedom is connected to shared practices of use and community rather than individual possession.
