Résumé:
Set within the cultural and political world of Vienna from the fin-de siecle to the present day, this book provides an insightful analysis of the city's extraordinarily rich architectural tradition. Beginning with Wagner’s polemical manifesto, ''Moderne Architektur'', it stresses the importance of the fraught and highly polarized cultural politics that engulfed Vienna for most of the twentieth century and ultimately produced much of what is modern in every field of culture and science. The book also places architectural history within the context of the political economy that has shaped Vienna and highlights the relatively unknown tradition of Viennese social housing, initiated by social democratic Red Vienna in the 1920s. Today, 60% of Vienna’s population lives in the most successful social housing in the world.

Résumé:
This book brings together writers and scholars on urban America to offer critical perspectives on how to sustain prosperous, livable cities in today's fast-evolving economy. Successful cities provide jobs, quality schools, safe and clean neighborhoods, effective transportation, and welcoming spaces for all residents. But cities must be managed well if they are to remain attractive places to work, relax, and raise a family; otherwise residents, firms, and workers will leave and the social and economic advantages of city living will be lost.

Résumé:
A fog of information and images has flooded the world: from advertising, television, radio, and film to the information glut produced by the new economy. With the rise of social networking, even our contemporaries, peers, and friends are all suddenly selling us the ultimate product: themselves. Here curator and critic Nato Thompson interrogates the implications of these developments for those dedicated to socially engaged art and activism. How can anyone find a voice and make change when the world is flooded with images and information? And what is one to make of the endless machine of consumer capitalism, which has appropriated much from the history of art and, in recent years, the methods of grassroots political organizing and social networking?

What is the contemporary legacy of Gramsci's notion of Hegemony? How can universality be reformulated now that its spurious versions have been so thoroughly criticized? In this ground-breaking project, Judith Butler, Ernesto Laclau and Slavoj Zizek engage in a dialogue on central questions of contemporary philosophy and politics. Their essays range over the Hegelian legacy in contemporary critical theory, the theoretical dilemmas of multiculturalism, the universalism- versus-particularism debate, the strategies of the Left in a globalized economy, and the relative merits of post-structumalism and Lacanian psychoanalysis for a critical social theory.

Résumé:
How design can transcend the logics, structures, and subjectivities of capitalism: a framework, theoretical grounding, and practical principles. The designed things, experiences, and symbols that we use to perceive, understand, and perform our everyday lives are much more than just props. They directly shape how we live. In ''Design after capitalism,'' Matthew Wizinsky argues that the world of industrial capitalism that gave birth to modern design has been dramatically transformed. Design today needs to reorient itself toward deliberate transitions of everyday politics, social relations, and economies. Looking at design through the lens of political economy, Wizinsky calls for the field to transcend the logics, structures, and subjectivities of capitalism—to combine design entrepreneurship with social empowerment in order to facilitate new ways of producing those things, symbols, and experiences that make up everyday life.

Résumé:
Between 1977 and 1987, a sluggish world economy that all but curtailed new building moved the most talented architects into teaching positions. In the academic environment, graphic experimentation proliferated and architects encountered an intellectual scene filled with passionate debates about philosophy, criticism, and social thought. This set the stage for an eruption of "paper architecture" of incomparable beauty and depth. Perfect Acts of Architecture identifies the preeminent achievements of five architects working during that turbulent period: Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Thom Mayne, and Bernard Tschumi. Catalogue of the exhibition at the Wexner Center for the Arts.

Résumé:
At a time marked by the climate crisis and violent conflicts, an increasing number of architects are turning to impermanence and adaptability to show an alternate path to tackle the fragility and scarcity affecting our planet. Counter to the neoliberal appetite for abundance and the delirium of indefinite growth, this issue explores the relationship between nature and economy. It examines the social construction of scarcity, finding in certain communities signs of resilience and adaptative intelligence. Case studies in Thailand, India, Iran, Rwanda, Niger, Colombia, and Ecuador serve to illuminate this new path. Also in this issue, an interview with Mexican architect Fernanda Canales.

Résumé:
New approaches in architecture reveal a trend towards “upcycling”. Yet the history of building has also always been a history of recycled and upcycled building materials and components, as well as of building knowledge and styles. Comprehending buildings as part of a process of social change poses a challenge to our modern concept of unambiguity, seclusion, and authorship in architecture. This volume explores the potential of historical concepts of upcycling, and confronts them with new developments in architectural and building practice. Rather than a matter of idealism, recycling and upcycling present an argument for economy and the quality of structure and design.

Résumé:
Many cities are reacting to decline by specializing in certain economic competences, image-building and branding. In Saxony-Anhalt, the International Building Exhibition (IBA)Urban Redevelopment 2010 is developing projects and strategies to open up new perspectives for cities through concentration on special economic areas and on particular cultural, social and civic skills. This volume compares IBA cities with other European cities with regard to the knowledge-based economy, culture and health care, and specifically examines strategies, political practices and the cities futre prospects. Experts analyse the three sectors, the perspectives and the constantly changing challenges that these cities have to respond to.
