This project series documents five of the fifteen proposals submitted by Pettena for the Trigon competition in Graz, Austria, in 1971. The proposals documented in this project series are the following: Proposal n° 7 "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)"; Proposal n° 11 "Instantaneous birth"; Proposal n° 12 "Conservazione"; Proposal n° 13 "Sedie e tavolo d’erba"; and Proposal n° 14 "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. Pettena won the first prize for both his proposal "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" (Proposal n° 7) and for "Grass Architecture" I and II (Proposal n° 14). In these proposals, Pettena "questioned the temporal dimension of architecture as well as its relationship with nature." [1] The proposal "Grass Architecture" consists of shapes of grass rising from the ground, creating a perishable form of architecture coming from within and becoming part of the territory. The "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" proposals are a variation of Pettena's previous performance project "Cancellazione di uno stato" in 1970. These proposals consist of "trails of passing airplanes crisscrossing? the sky, creating the outlines of a grid of clouds. Here, the legacy of the grid in modern architecture is rendered formless, as if “naturalized” by the evaporation of the clouds, subject to chance and the freely drifting trails left by the airplanes." [2] The project series contains presentation drawings (five original drawings, seventeen reprographic copies, and four photographic reproductions), for Pettena's proposals "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)", "Instantaneous birth", "Conservazione", "Sedie e tavolo d’erba", and "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. The series contains seven bands of negatives, divided into groups of two and three negatives a band. The first five bands document the 4th Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM) held on board the SS Patris II from 29 July to 13 August 1933, as it travelled between Marseilles, France, and Athens, Greece, and then returned. The conference, themed "The Functional City", presented and discussed the results of an analysis of more than thirty cities, and sought to establish new principles in urban planning. Sise participated at the conference as the Canadian delegate and presented the city of Los Angeles, California. The resolutions adopted at the conference were published for the first time in November under the title "Constatations du quatrième CIAM". These findings formed the base of the Charte d'Athenès written by Le Corbusier in 1941. The negatives show some of the participants of the conference including: Le Corbusier (1887-1965), from the French delegation; László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946), from the German delegation, who was in charge of filming the presentations; Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), representing Finland; and the painter Fernand Léger (1881-1955), also from the French delegatation, who presented on the importance of colour in architecture. The two other bands of negatives provide evidence of Sise's attendance at Comité International pour la Résolution des Problèmes d'Architecture Contemporaine (CIRPAC), held in May 1934 at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, England, to establish the program for the next CIAM (1). They also show his meeting in London with Georges Braque during the summer of the same year. The CCA's Rohault de Fleury collection includes two of Georges' historical and archeological studies of medieval Italian architecture: 'Les Monuments de Pise au Moyen', 1866 (DR1974:028:001:066) and 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres sur L' Architecture Civile et Militaire en 1400' 2 vols.,1874 (DR1974:0002:039 and DR1974:0002:040). 'Monuments de Pise au Moyen Age' is an atlas consisting solely of 66 prints of Pisan architecture, sculpture, and painting. The section on architecture is the largest, and is divided into three sections for the Lombard, Roman, and Gothic periods. The accompanying text, and an identical atlas of prints, is located in the CCA library. 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres...' is a history of Tuscan civil and military architecture to 1400. The text is in the form of a fictitious correspondence between Raimond du Temple, a famous architect of the Louvre under Charles V, and his son Charles who is traveling through Tuscany. The text is accompanied by photomechanical illustrations, mostly sketches of scenes from bas-reliefs and manuscripts, and a few of built structures. The CCA library has two sets of a related publication entitled 'La Toscane au Moyen Age architecture civile et militaire' 2 vols. These earlier and larger publications are probably the source for some of the text and plates of 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres...'. The introductory remarks, to 'La Toscane au Moyen Age Lettres..' and to the text (CCA library) of the 'Monuments de Pise au Moyen Age' are particularly informative as they provide an insight into Georges Rohault de Fleury's interpretation of historical periods of artistic renewal, decline, and decadence, and their didactic relationship to contemporary architectural and religious concerns.
