Two decades later, AV Monographs gathers a selection of twenty works that reflect the intellectual maturity and constructive precision of the Zurich-based studio. Despite the scarce geographic variety (only two of the buildings featured are outside of Switzerland), the projects published on these pages address a wide range of programs, from schools to sport centers and headquarters for newspapers, foundations or factories via single-family houses, apartment buildings, mixed-use blocks and even a police station.

Is it pointless to talk about architecture as a pure intellectual enterprise, without grounding it in its surroundings? These are among the important questions raised by the German architecture scholar Florentine Sack in this exploration of the philosophical, aesthetic, and subjective links between a building and its environment. Drawing upon traditions as old as that of the Japanese house through models of classical Western modernism, she brings the notion of unity to bear on contemporary architecture, referring to exemplary buildings by Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, and many others.

Arriving a decade ago, the Australian artist was immediately enthralled by the sprawling cityscape, mesmerized by the way the sunlight transformed it into two-dimensional, almost painterly abstractions. In his Post Truth series (2015–20), Byrne reassembles his photos of the urban landscape into striking, ascetic collages of color and geometric fragments, creating postmodernist oases in the metropolis.
