What happens when one gives a simple rubber band to an architect, historian, choreographer, chemist, artist, mathematician, physicist, economist, anthropologist, and geologist and asks each of them for a statement on elasticity? The economist studies the elasticity of supply and demand of market forces. “The Pars Foundation” draws researchers out of their specialized niches in order to publish their brilliant, crazy, important, or bewildering results and assembles them in this interdisciplinary volume. There are no guidelines for the form their contributions must take. It may be images, poems, essays, sketches, formulas or a piece of sculpture; the editors only ask that a contribution reect the respondent’s own field as well as his or her passion for the topic.

Résumé:
Since the introduction of steel as a building material in the early twentieth century, its superior performance has challenged conventional wisdom about construction, enabling designs of surprising lightness and span. Steel offered the opportunity to significantly expand buildings vertically and thus emerged as a symbol of the conflict between technological progress and the architectural ideal. More recently, the use of exposed steel elements in modern architecture ushered in a rediscovery of buildings’ metamorphoses. From the Eames House in Los Angeles to the Hôtel Tassel in Brussels and the Maison de Verre in Paris, "At Home in Steel" celebrates the use of steel in residential architecture.

Résumé:
For the sheer quantity and quality of his inventions, scientist and structural engineer Vladimir Shukhov (1853–1939) is sometimes referred to as the “Russian Thomas Edison.” Among his pioneering contributions are a number of innovations related to the oil industry, including the design and construction of the first Russian pipeline and the world’s first industrial plant for oil cracking. His groundbreaking structural works include the cable-supported hanging roof and the hyperboloid lattice tower epitomized by the Shukhov Tower in Moscow, which bears his name. Networks of Construction collects Shukhov’s trailblazing achievements from the turn of the twentieth century, exploring his career and complicated creative process. Each of Shukhov’s projects, the book shows, was realized through an elaborate process beginning with an intense period of planning to account for the interconnections among a wide range of factors, from the technical background of the construction workers to technology transfer, the nomenclature of steel grades, and the scientification of construction knowledge. Ekaterina Nozhova and Uta Hassler of the Institute of Historic Building Research and Conservation at ETH Zurich have painstakingly reconstructed Shukhov’s process through a wealth of drawings, photographs, and documents.

Résumé:
How architects and engineers relate to one another has long been debated but never before addressed over a broad span of history. There are many controversial issues: about professional demarcation, about credit for design, about the value we attach to art in buildings, and about how that connects with advances in technique and efficiency. This pioneering and handsomely illustrated book enquires for the first time into the pattern of these relationships since the Renaissance. Concentrating particularly on Britain, France and the United States, Architect and Engineer looks at what has actually taken place when architecture and engineering have interlocked. It examines projects ranging from the building of Waterloo Bridge to the evolution of the Chicago skyscraper, and personalities from Vauban to Brunel and Wright. The results of this impartial investigation may often surprise and provoke the reader. It is a study that has radical implications for the compartmentalized ways in which the history of architecture and construction has conventionally been addressed

Résumé:
GUNITE OVER?
