In this book he looks at eight of his contemporaries -- all architects of international stature -- and discusses the theoretical positions, technical innovations, and design contributions of each. Moneo's discussion of these eight architects -- James Stirling, Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi, Peter Eisenman, Alvaro Siza, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and the partnership of Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron -- has the colloquial, engaging tone of a series of lectures on modern architecture by a master architect; the reader hears not the dispassionate theorizing of an academic, but Moneo's own deeply held convictions as he considers the work of his contemporaries. Taking us from the historical background and architectural context at MIT through the interaction of the clients' needs and the architect's vision to the choice of building materials and construction methods, "Building Stata" offers a detailed look at the evolution of a major work by a master architect. The purpose of the Stata Center is to bring the "intelligence sciences" - computer science, artificial intelligence, information and decision systems, linguistics, and philosophy - together into a space that emphasizes research-focused collaboration. Frank Gehry's design integrates flexible and interconnected workspaces and incorporates a series of steps from public to private space, with places for social and intellectual interaction on lower levels giving way to space for study and contemplation on the upper floors; thus a two-level warehouse-like space is topped by two towers. The Center is wrapped around a series of outdoor terraces visible from a central court in both towers. The characteristic Gehry curves are clad in metal, the more block-like elements in brick. The architectural drawings and photographs in "Building Stata" document the making of the Stata Center from concept to concrete reality. The photographs by Richard Sobol portray a work in progress, evoking the beauty of its architectural form and capturing the telling detail - the building's sculptured shape against a clear blue sky, or construction workers perched on a massive curve of metal.

Over 20 years ago, architect Renzo Piano established his firm and dubbed it the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW)--a name that recalls the art studios of the Renaissance, where the master artist worked closely and actively with his apprentices. Students have always been an active component of the Building Workshop, functioning in a team with experienced architects and other experts, contributing to an international array of projects from two studio bases: one in Paris and one in Genoa, Italy. This small, intimate publication presents essays on both the Building Workshop and Piano himself, together with photographs of the two studios and of completed RPBW structures.

In this chunky, silvery book, they meticulously illustrate the creative process that led to the realization of "a house and a plaza," a tall and narrow kaleidoscope-like structure that houses a two-story retail space and multiple levels of offices, backed by an outdoor space for the public--a rarity in crowded Tokyo. The finished structure, encased in a visually porous shell or skin, is as decorative as it is architectural--or as architectural as it is decorative--and is both metaphorically and literally linked to its surrounding environment, and to the idea of the garment. Here is the story of a theoretically and structurally complex building told lovingly and simply by its architects, through words, models, sketches, photographs, and architectural renderings.
