Projet
AP207.S1.1971.PR02
Description:
This project series documents five of the fifteen proposals submitted by Pettena for the Trigon competition in Graz, Austria, in 1971. The proposals documented in this project series are the following: Proposal n° 7 "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)"; Proposal n° 11 "Instantaneous birth"; Proposal n° 12 "Conservazione"; Proposal n° 13 "Sedie e tavolo d’erba"; and Proposal n° 14 "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. Pettena won the first prize for both his proposal "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" (Proposal n° 7) and for "Grass Architecture" I and II (Proposal n° 14). In these proposals, Pettena "questioned the temporal dimension of architecture as well as its relationship with nature." [1] The proposal "Grass Architecture" consists of shapes of grass rising from the ground, creating a perishable form of architecture coming from within and becoming part of the territory. The "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" proposals are a variation of Pettena's previous performance project "Cancellazione di uno stato" in 1970. These proposals consist of "trails of passing airplanes crisscrossing? the sky, creating the outlines of a grid of clouds. Here, the legacy of the grid in modern architecture is rendered formless, as if “naturalized” by the evaporation of the clouds, subject to chance and the freely drifting trails left by the airplanes." [2] The project series contains presentation drawings (five original drawings, seventeen reprographic copies, and four photographic reproductions), for Pettena's proposals "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)", "Instantaneous birth", "Conservazione", "Sedie e tavolo d’erba", and "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. The project series also includes photographs of models for the "Grass Architecture" proposal. AP178.S1.1984.PR02
Description:
The project series documents the Punt en Komma social housing project in The Hague, The Netherlands, with some materials related to the Urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5, Schilderswijk-West. While the records were held in the office’s archives the urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5 was assigned the number 30/80 and Punt en Komma was assigned the number 30/80 A/B (Punt (A) and Komma (B)). The office assigned the date 1984 for this project. In the mid to late1970s The Hague underwent an urban renewal program and in 1980 Adri Duivesteijn became the alderman responsible for this program. Dissatisfied with the results, in the early to mid-1980s Duivesteijn began a campaign to look at urban renewal as a cultural approach, and was interested in the participatory process that Siza incorporated for the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) in Portugal and the Berlin projects submitted to the International Architectural Exhibition Berlin competition (International Bauaustellung, IBA, circa 1979-1987). After taking a trip to Portugal, Duivesteijn invited Siza to speak with residents of Schilderswijk. The urban plan for Schilderswijk was the first part of a redevelopment plan for the 19th century district and included two four story blocks of 106 apartments, named Punt en Komma. Schilderswijk is in the centre of The Hague and is nearby the Haag Spoor train station. The residents are made up of multi-ethnic communities and included immigrants from Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, and Portugal. Similarly to the Berlin projects, Siza was faced with cultural tensions between the residents of the area. The urban plan was to take into account the preservation of the neighborhood's identity while accounting for the changes brought on by multi-ethnic communities. As with the SAAL and Berlin projects there was an element of participation from the residents and included the collaboration of a residents association. In the “Plan of Zone 5 of Schilderswijk Centrum…”, found in this project series [AP178.S1.1984.PR02.024.1, AP178.S1.1984.PR02.024.2], it is outlined that meetings were periodically held with technicians appointed by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing of The Hague, the Housing Cooperative, and each of the designers. Siza’s design for Punt en Komma incorporated elements prevalent in Dutch architecture such as the Haagse Portiek. However, he also included components in his design which accounted for the needs of residents living there at the time. One feature which gained much attention was the incorporation of sliding doors in the apartments. Siza included these doors in his design in consideration of the cultural practices of Muslim families. Documenting this project series are drawings, photographic materials, and textual documentation. Among the drawings are plans, elevations, sections, and details, as well as axonometric drawings, such as the proposed design for Deelgebied zone 5 (including Punt en Komma) and drawings of the Haagse Porteik. Photographic materials document both Duivesteijn’s trip to Portugal and Siza’s first trip to The Hague and include photographs, negatives, and slides of the built project, as well as slides of drawings. Note that the photographic materials include photographs related to the housing and shopping complex in Schilderswijk. Textual documentation includes brochures regarding rent increases, a copy of “Stadsvernieuwing als Kulturele Aktiviteit” by Duivesteijn, and information booklets for the residents. Also included are minutes of meeting and correspondence from the Woningbouwvereniging’s-Gravenhage. Among the correspondence are letters regarding construction costs, including a letter from Siza to the local architectural firm Architectengemeenschap Van den Broek en Bakema explaining that he does not wish to modify the detail he specified for the lintels of the Punt building. There is also correspondence from project architect Carlos Castenheira and Duivesteijn and a summary of the meeting between Siza and the Committee of the Corporation for Social Housing (17 April, 1985)[AP178.S1.1984.PR02.025.1] It is important to note that Siza also participated in other projects for this urban renewal program: the housing and shopping complex in Schilderswijk [AP178.S1.1984.PR03], the Van der Vennepark [AP178.S1.1985.PR01], and the residential settlement in Schilderswijk (Plano de Doedijnstraat [AP178.S1.1989.PR03]). All three of these projects are arranged in separate project series.

Original directory name: "11_Publikation". File consists chiefly of presentations (Powerpoint, PDF and InDesign files), organized by date and topic such as the double cone, the interior design, the restaurants, the lighting, etc. Often, drawings or images used in the presentations are kept within the same directory. In some instances Adobe InDesign files might have dependencies on those drawings and images, so duplicates were not removed. Presentations seemed to have served various purposes such as showing design proposals or the construction’s progress. Some system files, true type font and photographs predate the BMW Welt project. File notably contains the film commissioned by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU to Imaginary Forces in order to show BMW the magnitude of the project of BMW Welt. A six meter long model was created for this purpose. The film was shown to the client on a 8 x 10 meter screen. Film is in directory "o_Präsentation\050407_INNENAUSBAU" and there are also preliminary and alternate versions in other directories in this file. Original directory name: "24_TRIAS-Masterplan". File contains preliminary design records for a pedestrian bridge that would connect BMW Welt to the BMW Museum. Drawings, plans, wireframes, presentations, and photographs of models show scenarios to ease visitors’ journey between BMW Welt, BMW Museum and the BMW plant. Aside from plans and elevations, in CAD or PDF formats for the most part, there are a few analyses of the structure and its relation to the other structures of the BMW complex. There are also lists of drawings and technical descriptions of the project. Records are chiefly organized by consultants and date. Early files from 1997 are AutoCAD Font Mapping Table (.fmp) on which other files are dependent to open correctly. File contains a handful of drawings with the extension 3dxml that were generated with CATIA V5. Files from the sofiCAD plug-in for AutoCAD were also found and were maintained as other files might have dependencies on them. Most duplicates are dependency files found in various sub-directories. AP166.S1
Description:
Series 1, Architectural Projects (1990-2012, predominant 1990-1996) contains files for seven projects developed by Shoei Yoh and the firm Shoei Yoh + Architects. Six of these projects were developed during the period 1990-1996 in Japan. The Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium in Imizu, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, is the most voluminous project file and is related to two other projects in the series—the Odawara Municipal Sports Complex and the Prospecta Toyama ’92 Observatory Tower. The Odawara Municipal Sports Complex and the Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium were developed at approximately the same time, and, for both projects, digital technology was used to calculate the dimensions of elements in a space frame roof structure. The Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium and the Prospecta Toyama ’92 Observatory Tower were both designed by Shoei Yoh for the 1st Japan Expo Toyama ’92 (JET ‘92) and each of the two project files contains some material related to the other. The Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium project contains CAD files related to the roof design, printouts from computer simulations of the roof, design drawings, presentation material, architectural and structural working drawings, models and textual records. The project file for the Odawara Municipal Sports Complex contains some design drawings--including printouts from computer simulations of the roof, proposal documents and some photographs of the site. The other built projects—the Prospecta Toyama ’92 Observatory Tower, the Glass Station, the Naiju Community Center and Nursery School, and the Uchino Community Center for Seniors and Children—are documented through drawings, models, and photographic material. The final project file in the series--a project for a tower in Taichung, Taiwan—is composed of a few presentation documents. Drawings in the series include hand drawings and printouts or photocopies of images created using digital design software. Apart from the CAD files related to the roof design for the Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium, digital material in the series is composed of still images in .jpg format related to the projects for the Odawara Municipal Sports Complex and the Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium. Some of the documents in .jpg format are duplicates of paper documents in the series.

Projet
House X
AP143.S4.D20
Description:
File documents an unexecuted project for House X, designed for Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Aronoff for a 40-acre site on Lahser Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The ground floor consists of a kitchen, dining room, breakfast room, laundry room, two powder rooms and two garages. The second floor consists of a master suite with study, two bedrooms, bathroom, family and living rooms, bar, bathhouse and deck. The third floor consists of a solarium, terrace, bedroom and maid's room with bathroom. A swimming pool, tennis court and gatehouse are situated on the grounds. Thirteen schemes were developed for this project: A, A1, B, C, C1, C2, D, E, E1, E2, F, G, H. Only schemes G and H were developed into detailed floor plans. The drawings have been organized by drawing type, because of the subtle variations which characterize each scheme. Eisenman manipulates the four "els" (fragmentary forms - the three-sided portion of a hollow cube - that he introduced in House X to replace the cube, the preferred generating volume of his first five houses) in over 200 conceptual drawings (DR1994:0138:001-0219). There are numerous design development and complete sets of working drawings (design development drawings: DR1994:0138:239-541; working drawings: DR1994:0138:1182-1457). The project was extensively published, and the file includes a number of drawings and models created for exhibition and publication, including photographs of models (DR1994:0138:1481-1501), pieces of the "axonometric model" constructed after the project had been abandoned (DR1994:0138:1458-1476), and coloured paper cut-outs for collages (cut-outs, DR1994:0138:0929-0933 and DR1994:0138:1477-1480; collage: DR1994:0138:0928). The file also includes drawings and reprographic copies for the following projects: a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Aronoff, designed by Irving E. Palmquist, (DR1994:0138:1512-1521); Bernstein House, Mamaroneck, New York, designed by John Hejduk (DR1994:0138:1524-1531); Maison Domino by Le Corbusier (DR1994:0138:0944-0965); and land subdivision and houses for Arnold Aronoff, designed by Eisenman (DR1994:0138:0434-0441). Material in this file was produced between 1960 and 1977. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, photographic materials, presentation drawings, presentation panels, publication drawings, record drawings, schematic drawings, a study model, textual records, and working drawings.
