Moneo's discussion of these eight architects -- James Stirling, Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi, Peter Eisenman, Alvaro Siza, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and the partnership of Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron -- has the colloquial, engaging tone of a series of lectures on modern architecture by a master architect; the reader hears not the dispassionate theorizing of an academic, but Moneo's own deeply held convictions as he considers the work of his contemporaries. "The Manifesta decade" marks Manifesta's ten years of exhibits with original essays, unpublished images, and texts that not only document the different Manifesta exhibits but also examine the cultural, curatorial, and political terrain of the Europe from which they sprang. Including contributions from philosophers, historians, and anthropologists, interviews with architect Rem Koolhaas and historian Jacques Le Goff, and essays by such curators and writers as Okwui Enwezor, Boris Groys, Maria Hlavajova, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the collection traces the cultural and political developments of Europe in the 1990s. It reflects the debates incited by exhibitions such as "Magiciens de la terre", Documenta, and "After the wall" and explores the changing roles of curators and artists in the new geo-political context. The issues discussed include the effect of communism's collapse on Eastern Europe, the role of biennials in the context of globalization, and the ephemerality of exhibitions versus the permanence of the museum. The book's second section traces the history of Manifesta, from its conceptual foundations and contributions to artistic practices of the 1990s to the relationship of a roving biennial to themes of multiculturalism, migration and diaspora. Issue 229 of the magazine Quaderns explores the theme of the border in its literal sense -the border as a political and cultural separation between countries or geographical areas- but also as a place which gives rise to cultural crossovers alongside its function as separator. This issue looks firstly at the transformation of two formerly divided cities, Berlin and Beirut, which are currently undergoing processes of integration of what used to be opposing sectors and of recovery as city-centre spaces of the wastelands generated by division. Then it analyses the present-day situation in two border areas characterised by strong economic and cultural contrasts between the two sides of the dividing line: the border between the United States and Mexico, and the Strait of Gibraltar. The works of architects and artists who have recently worked in these places are taken as a starting point for debate about the strategies brought to bear in frontier territory by urbanism, art and architecture. The issue includes an introductory text by Saskia Sassen and features Mathias Sauerbruch on Berlin, Álvaro Siza on Ceuta, Rafael Moneo and Ousama Kabbani on Beirut, and Gloria Anzaldúa on the border between Mexico and the United States. It also presents a series of works actually carried out in these cities by Sauerbruch & Hutton, Álvaro Siza and Rafael Moneo, along with projects by Berger-Parkinnen, Kollhof & Kollhoff, Gustav Lange, OMA/Rem Koolhaas and Peter Zumthor, among others, and features a dossier with projects carried out in other countries by Catalan architects, including works by Miralles-Tagliabue, J. The Swiss-born, everywhere-based curator and head of the Programme Migrateurs at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris has an unstoppable wanderlust and a related symptom: his penchant for interviewing anyone and everyone who piques his curiosity, be they artist, scientist, writer, curator, composer, architect, thinker, etc. Since 1993, Obrist has conducted more than 300 interviews, 75 of which are collected here in a selection that respects the cultural and professional diversity of the interviewees. Each interview is introduced by a short text outlining the biography of the interviewee and giving some contextual information on the recording of the interview.

Through a diversity of projects, the firm has transformed our understanding of the city and our evolving relationship with art, fashion, food, sustainability, and other quintessentially twenty-first-century preoccupations. The works presented here elaborate on OMA’s philosophy even as they expand its portfolio geographically. Featured projects include residential skyscrapers in New York, Miami, and San Francisco, mixed-use developments in cities from Tokyo to Houston, and projects like 11th Street Bridge Park in the public realm, alongside more intimate spaces such as the studio for renowned Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang.
