Résumé:
What would be of contemporary culture if we did not recognize the impact of migration in cultural and socio-economic crossings? This book explores human migration in different times, contexts, and geographies surrounding the Aegean Sea. Through an assemblage of voices, lived experiences, historical documents, urban and rural dislocations, this publication examines responses to mobility of the ones on the move, and of the ones living in the destinations the former are heading to. It speaks of the sacrifices one is forced to make en route and at its antipode; the implications of voluntary migration to a place, steered by investment in real estate.

Résumé:
The uncertain state of Europe is the primary concern of Multiplicity : a multidisciplinary group of Europeans architects, photographers, urban developers and artists who met to explore and develop a series of studies focusing on contemporary European cities and their ongoing changes. The group uses on-site investigations, documented with beautiful photographs by Francesco Jodice and Gabriele Basilico, to illustrate the radical and dramatic changes occurring on European land and in its cities. Traditional spaces are slowly, yet forcefully, transforming due to the constant economic, political, and social upheavals and alterations. With an introduction by prominent political and intellectual figures such as Etienne Balibar, Rem Koolhas and Jeremy Rifkin, this volume analyses 24 cases of urban transformation. The cases cover geographical locations from Paris to Pristina, Helsinki to Bucharest, and show the extraordinary riches a modern city can offer while, at the same time, highlighting the abnormal spaces created by the existence of a so-called secondary world. The final section is dedicated to a series of ideas which view Europe as a single entity : a network of relations, trade, encounters, migration, transportation, construction, and offers an absolutely novel view of the ‘old’ world. Richly illustrated, this tome includes passages by architectural critics such as Stefano Boeri, Yorgos Semiforidis, Eduard Bru, Bart Lootsma.

Résumé:
Vancouver is heralded around the world as a model for sustainable development. In "Planning on the edge," nationally and internationally renowned planning scholars, activists, and Indigenous leaders assess whether that reputation is warranted. While recognizing the many successes of the "Vancouverism" model, the contributors acknowledge that the forces of globalization and speculative property development have increased social inequality and housing insecurity since the 1980s in the city and the region. To determine the city’s prospects for overcoming these problems, they look at city planning from all angles, including planning for the Indigenous population, environmental and disaster planning, housing and migration, and transportation and water management. By looking at policies at the local, provincial, and federal levels and taking reconciliation with Indigenous peoples into account, "Planning on the edge" highlights the kinds of policies and practices needed to reorient Vancouver’s development trajectory along a more environmentally sound and equitable path.

Résumé:
Newspaper articles, speeches, and essays show Sunil Gupta’s crucial role at the center of grassroots queer and postcolonial organizing throughout an artistic career lived between Canada, the UK, and India. In his pieces about homosexuality in Indian cities, the AIDS crisis, the Black Arts Movement, or key figures including Joy Gregory and Robert Mapplethorpe, Gupta foregrounds the power of cultural activism in the politically fraught contexts of London and Delhi, and illuminates the essential connections between queer migration and self-discovery. Continually questioning given forms of identity, Gupta offers artists and curators multiple strategies of resistance, carving out space for new ways of imagining what it might mean to live, love, and create.

Résumé:
The conditions of alienation and exclusion are inextricably linked to the experience of the migrant. This ground-breaking volume explores both the increasing emergence of the theme of migration as a dominant subject matter in art as well as the ways in which the varied mobilities of a globalized world have radically reshaped art's conditions of production, reception, and display. In a wide-ranging selection of essays, fourteen distinguished scholars in the fields of visual studies, art history, literary studies, global studies, and art criticism explore the universality of conditions of global migration and interdependence, inviting a rethinking of existing perspectives in postcolonial, transnational, and diaspora studies, and laying the foundation for empirical and theoretical directions beyond the terms of these traditional frameworks.

Résumé:
''MigraTouriSpace'' is an artistic examination of travelling as an approach to the phenomena of migration and tourism, and of the many ways in which they overlap. Understanding that when people travel they also take with them spaces and images means that tourism no longer inevitably refers to the vacation as an exceptional state. Brought back home, the tourist’s gaze has long operated to shape everyday life. For three years, artist Stefanie Bürkle and her interdisciplinary team travelled between Berlin and South Korea, photographing and filming. The result of this research is an atlas of images, with places such as the Vietnamese wholesale market Dong Xuan Center in Berlin Lichtenberg and the German Village, Dogil Maeul, in South Korea, that demonstrates the tension between a migration of culturally coded spatial contexts and post-touristic practices. With a preface by Martina Löw.
