Résumé:
Beginning with an overview of global urbanization patterns, particularly the entropic forces that exacerbate poverty, increase violence, and discourage democratic life in peripheral areas, "The Prospect of Cities" goes on to address specific contemporary issues. These range in subject and scale from the impact of transnational migration on global cities whose populations are at least 30 percent of foreign origin to the critical importance of everyday life, as it is experienced on the streets and in neighborhoods, for a full understanding of urban planning. The final chapter traces the author's evolution as a theorist of city-regional development and planning, deepening the perspective mapped out over the course of the volume and providing new insight into the study of the urban landscape in a global environment.

Art Deco: a mode of mobility

Résumé:
This book argues that mobility is the central theme of the interwar mode of design known today as Art Deco. It is present on the very surfaces of Art Deco objects and architecture – in iconography and general formal qualities (whether the zigzag rectilinear forms ¬popular in the 1920s or curvilinear streamlining of the 1930s).
By focussing on mobility as a means of tying the seemingly disparate qualities of Art Deco together, Michael Windover shows how the surface-level expressions correspond as well with underpinning systems of mobility, including those associated with migration, transportation, commodity exchange, capital, and communication.

Résumé:
What if we stopped dividing the US and Mexico, and instead saw the border as one region? This book envisions the cultural and industrial cohesion of the area. At a moment when migration has returned as a hot-button political issue and NAFTA is being renegotiated as the USMC, political discourse has exaggerated differences on either side of the shared US/Mexico border. But what if we stopped dividing the United States and Mexico into two separate nations, and instead studied their shared histories, cultures and economies, acknowledging them as parts of a single region? In 2018, under the direction of Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao, 13 architecture studios and their students across the United States and Mexico undertook the monumental task of attempting to rethink the US/Mexico border as a complex and dynamic, but also cohesive and integrated, region. ''Two sides of the border'' envisions the borderlands through five themes: creative industries and local production, migration, housing and cities, territorial economies and tourism. Building on a long shared history in the region, the projects in this volume use design and architecture to address social, political and ecological concerns along our shared border.

Conceived and designed by the Foresight, innovation and incubation team at Arup, the influential consulting firm that advises on all aspects of the built environment, this card set features seven topics that have been chosen as headings for further discussion: energy, waste, climate change, water, demographics, urbanization and poverty. The 189 cards are divided into five domains known as the steep framework: societal, technological, economic, environmental, and political. Each card represents a single driver of change-for instance urban migration, ageing population, austerity-along with a challenging and thought-provoking question. The flip side of the card provides pertinent data to expand on the question, as well as maps, graphs, and other illustrations. An accompanying booklet offers tips on how to use these cards independently or in a group setting. Whether brainstorming for new ideas or facilitating a discussion, these graphically sophisticated cards are an excellent resource for anyone interested in the future of technology, design and sustainability or indeed the way we might live in the years to come.

Résumé:
What with global warming, the war on terror, extreme political polarization, an unstoppable demographic explosion and migration, anarchy and chaos are becoming parts of our world system in hitherto unprecedented ways. What to call the planetary state of emergency we are now entering - a “New World Disorder,” perhaps, or “Entropic Empire”? In his latest book, the Dutch philosopher, art historian, writer and activist Lieven De Cauter suggests that an entropic empire is created by opposing forces or philosophical poles: the “state of exception” (tyranny) and the “state of nature” (anarchy). Entropic Empire: Considerations on the Planetary State of Emergency is part post-historical sci-fi scenario and part philosophical consideration on the eternal return of prehistory (the “state of nature”). For De Cauter, the simple but troubling question is: are we falling out of history?

Résumé:
The provenance of artworks is a burning issue in current scholarship and politics. Transpose provenance into architecture and it reveals new and surprising dimensions in the social, material and cultural lives of buildings and architectural artefacts, reframing questions of migration, movement and circulation. Provenance in architecture illuminates the intricate trajectories of fundamentally composite objects from their complex origins to their uncertain destinations. This dictionary examines architectural provenance across 101 key concepts from "Acquisition" to "Will". The entries provide new ways of writing architectural history, highlighting how architecture moves, is destroyed, survives and is transformed.

Résumé:
Using comics, interviews, and architectural sketches, ‘Undocumented’ explores a growing industry in an era of militarized borders, state surveillance, and criminalized migration. Originally released in 2014 to an architectural audience, this special edition from Ad Astra Comix features an updated afterword by Syed Hussan (No One Is Illegal, Toronto), as well as an interview with a former detainee. Focusing on Canada’s migrant detention system, where detainees are often held in maximum security prisons without charges for indefinite periods of time, "Undocumented" draws chilling conclusions about the societies that tolerate these punitive spaces of confinement. Proceeds from the sale of each book go to the End Immigration Detention Network.

Résumé:
In ''¡Presente!: the politics of presence'' Diana Taylor asks what it means to be physically and politically present in situations where it seems that nothing can be done. As much an act, a word, an attitude, a theoretical intervention, and a performance pedagogy, Taylor maps ''¡Presente!'' at work in scenarios ranging from conquest, through colonial enactments and resistance movements, to present moments of capitalist extractivism and forced migration in the Americas. ''¡Presente!''—present among, with, and to; a walking and talking with others; an ontological and epistemic reflection on presence and subjectivity as participatory and relational, founded on mutual recognition—requires rethinking and unlearning in ways that challenge colonial epistemologies. Showing how knowledge is not something to be harvested but a process of being, knowing, and acting with others, Taylor models a way for scholarship to be present in political struggles.

Résumé:
Technology mediates how we know and experience cities, and the nature of this mediation has always been deeply political. Today, the production and deployment of data is at the forefront of projects to grasp and reshape urban life. ''Ways of knowing cities'' considers the role of technology in generating, materializing, and contesting urban epistemologies- tracing an arc from ubiquitous sites of ''smart'' urbanism, to discrete struggles over infrastructural governance, to forgotten histories of segregation now naturalized in urban algorithms, to exceptional territories of border policing. Bringing together architects, urbanists, artists, and scholars of critical migration studies, media theory, geography, anthropology, and literature, the essays stage a deeply interdisciplinary conversation, interrogating the ways in which certain ways of knowing are predicated on the erasure of others. In this opening, the book engages the information systems that structure urban space and social life in it, historically and in the present moment, to imagine alternative practices and generate new critical perspectives on spatial research.

Résumé:
''Oceans'' cover more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, dividing and connecting humans, who carry saltwater in their blood, sweat, and tears. They also represent a powerful nonhuman force, rising, flooding, heating and raging in unprecedented ways as the climate crisis unfolds. Artists have envisioned the sea as a sublime wilderness, home to mythical creatures and bizarre species, a source of life and death, a site of new beginnings and tragic endings, both wondrous and disastrous. From migration to melting ice caps, the sea is omnipresent in international news and politics, leaking into popular culture and proliferating in recent art and exhibitions. This anthology gathers artists and writers to address the ocean not only as a theme but as a major agent of artistic and curatorial methods.
