Elsewhere they trace a search for hope. Two hundred years ago, Lewis and Clark reported finding in the American Northwest a vast forest of ancient evergreens. In "Turning back", Robert Adams looks again at the region’s trees, discovering evidence both of America’s failure and of a continuing promise. President Jefferson’s primary charge to Lewis and Clark was to prepare the way for American commerce. Today, historians still speculate about why, upon his return, Lewis lapsed into depression and apparently committed suicide. "Going east," Adams suggests, "was more difficult than going west." So then, what is the future? "Turning back" documents two kinds of predictive evidence. On the one hand we observe the results of greed so unrestrained that they are indistinguishable from those of nihilism. On the other we see what still lives, whether by our design or neglect, or Providence; in these 164 pictures the tone is celebratory, as in a prayer book. From coastal landscapes populated with tourists to timber clear-cutting and small family farms in eastern Oregon, here we reflect on what was lost, what is retained, and what we value both regionally and as a people with a common history.

The aesthetics and spirit of popular culture have been increasingly relevant to British graphic designers over the past several decades. “Communicate” offers a fascinating selection of this innovative work, examining closely the influence of youth culture, pop music, and new wave aesthetics on graphic design during the 1960s and ever since. Illustrated in full colour, “Communicate” features 350 images that range from classic designs of the sixties to the work of today’s emerging design teams, including record album covers for groups including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Roxy Music; political protest posters; psychedelic concert posters; typeface projects and signage; and designs for books, magazines, and film. Focusing on work from small, independent studios where creativity, rather than the bottom line, is paramount, the book includes projects by some 60 outstanding designers including Derek Birdsall, Richard Hollis, Neville Brody, Why Not Associates, and Scott King. The book now offers many beautiful colour illustrations; biographies and bibliographies of all major figures; illustrated short essays on key themes, movements, and individuals; a critique of Pevsner’s analysis from today’s perspective; examples of works after 1914 (where the original study ended); a biography detailing Pevsner’s life and achievements; and much more. Pevsner saw Modernism as a synthesis of three main sources: William Morris and his followers, the work of nineteenth-century engineers, and Art Nouveau. The author considers the role of these sources in the work of early Modernists and looks at such masters of the movement as C.F.A. Voysey and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Britain, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in America, and Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner in Vienna. The account concludes with a discussion of the radical break with the past represented by the design work of Walter Gropius and his future Bauhaus colleagues.
