Résumé:
One of the most influential Marxist theorists of the twentieth century, Henri Lefebvre pioneered the study of the modern state in an age of accelerating global economic integration and fragmentation. Shortly after the 1974 publication of his landmark book The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his career: a consideration of the history and geographies of the modern state through a monumental study that linked several disciplines, including political science, sociology, geography, and history. State, Space, World collects a series of Lefebvre’s key writings on the state from this period. Making available in English for the first time the as-yet-unexplored political aspect of Lefebvre’s work, it contains essays on philosophy, political theory, state formation, spatial planning, and globalization, as well as provocative reflections on the possibilities and limits of grassroots democracy under advanced capitalism.

Résumé:
This palm-sized book presents two of the most innovative structures of the modern age (and two of the most important art museums)in one package. The book highlights the New York Guggenheim, Frank Lloyd Wright's crowning achievement, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, recently designed to high acclaim by Frank O. Gehry. One half of the book contains 30 duotone photographs of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. These images were taken in 1959, shortly after the building's completion, by Ezra Stoller, one of the pre-eminent architectural photographers in the world and the founder of the renowned Esto architectural photography studio. Flipping the book over reveals the other half, which consists of 34 colour images of the Bilbao Museum, taken by Jeff Goldberg, an Esto architectural photographer and winner of the 1999 Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement from the American Institute of Architects.

Résumé:
The diverse works of architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661–1736) range from small architectural details to ambitious urban plans, from new parish churches to work on the monument of his age, St. Paul’s Cathedral. As a young man Hawksmoor assisted Christopher Wren and John Vanbrugh, emerging from these apprenticeships to design some of the most vigorous and dramatic buildings in England. In this book, architectural historian Vaughan Hart presents a fresh view of Hawksmoor’s built and planned work. In addition, Hart offers the first coherent explanation of Hawksmoor’s theory of architecture. The book explains why Hawksmoor’s buildings look the way they do, what contemporary events influenced his work, and how such ancient buildings as Solomon’s temple and Mausolus’s tomb inspired him. Underscoring the unique qualities of the architect’s accomplishments and aspirations, Hart establishes with new clarity Hawksmoor’s vital role in the development of English architecture.

Agnes Martin (1912–2004) wrote Religion of Love, a late statement on her work and thought, sometime in the 1990s. Composed of short, aphoristic statements and paragraphs, it lucidly states her art credo and life advice: "Love makes us want to do all the good things. Get up in the morning and work for life." "The part of the mind that's aware of perfection tells us everything that is good." "You can contact the mind by asking for help." Somewhat uncharacteristically, Martin asked her friend Richard Tuttle to illustrate it. As Tuttle writes in his introduction, "on the one hand, it reconfirms her most classical thought (Beauty is the mystery of life), and, on the other, adds new thought with an urgency only found in a mature artist of her age and persuasion." This beautiful, slim volume constitutes both an important artist's statement and a great collaboration.

Résumé:
In Spring 2015, the photographer Joel Meyerowitz sat at the work table in Giorgio Morandi’s Bologna home, in the exact spot where the painter had sat for over 40 years making his quiet, sublime still lifes. Here Meyerowitz looked at, touched, studied and connected with the more than 250 objects that Morandi painted. Using only the warm natural light in the room, he photographed Morandi’s objects: vases, shells, pigment-filled bottles, silk flowers, tins, funnels, watering cans. In the photographs, each object sits on Morandi’s table, which still bears the marks the painter drew to set the positions of his subjects. In the background is the same paper that Morandi left on the wall, now brittle and yellow with age. Meyerowitz’s portraits of these dusty, aged objects are not only works of art themselves, but they offer insight into the humble subjects that Morandi transformed into his subtle and luminous paintings.

Résumé:
Cities have always been places where commerce and production, working and living, are physically and functionally integrated. Only with the rise of industry have zoning regulations been introduced to separate these functions. But what role do these regulations play when industry is digitized, increasingly emission-free and shifting away from mass production What will the ideal mix of working and living be in the future In a world characterized by digital disruption, migration and demographic shifts, how do we build cities based on social equity and resilience. Based on interdisciplinary urban design research undertaken at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, the Zurich-based architecture studio Hosoya Schaefer presents ''The industrious city: urban industry in the digital age''. Investigating how production can be reintroduced into the urban fabric, this book explores how production, services, leisure and living might come together in a future integrated city.

Résumé:
Many provincial towns in Britain grew dramatically in size and importance in the eighteenth century. Ports such as Glasgow and Liverpool greatly expanded, while industrial centers such as Birmingham and Manchester flourished. Market towns outside London developed as commercial centers or as specialty destinations: visitors could find spa treatments in Bath, horse racing in Newmarket, and naval services in Portsmouth. Containing more than one hundred images of country towns in England, Wales, and Scotland, this book draws on the extensive Gough collection in the Bodleian Library. Contemporary prints and drawings provide a powerful visual record of the development of the town in this period, and finely drawn prospects and maps—made with greater accuracy than ever before—reveal their early development. This book also includes perceptive observations from the journals and letters of collector Richard Gough (1735–1809), who traveled throughout the country on the cusp of the industrial age.

Résumé:
Blending pop culture iconography with the existential threat of technological creations turning on their creators, "Emotional robots" is a compulsively readable graphic novella set in an all-too presciently depicted world in which advanced robots successfully compete with humans—in sports, music, and art—in pursuit of emotional intelligence. Displaced by the robots' technological triumph, humans abandon Earth in search of a new planet to call home. But what happens to the robots when newer, faster, smarter, better robots replace them? What happens when civil unrest grows between robot generations? An astute take on the human condition and the illusory promises of technology, "Emotional robots" is captivating fable for the modern age. With keen wit and dark humor, it artfully tackles universal themes urgently relevant to our time, asking readers the question faced by each new generation of humans (and robots): Is history condemned to repeat itself?

Résumé:
The great Italian architect, designer, theorist and printmaker Aldo Rossi (1931–97) galvanized the postmodernist architectural movement in the middle of the 20th century with his unique synthesis of influences such as Adolf Loos, Giorgio de Chirico and Soviet architecture. From his publication Architecture of the City (1966) to his 1976 exhibition Analogous City, Rossi spent a decade developing a theory of urban design that focused on the “collective memory” of a city as an essential element of its urban planning and gave consideration to how buildings and urban areas age over time. Here, Rossi’s theory is applied to his own works from that period, both built and unbuilt, in a careful selection of 23 projects that express this memory-based paradigm of civic existence and construction. Aldo Rossi: The Urban Fact thus unifies Rossi’s theory and practice, demonstrating the visionary dimension driving his singular brand of postmodernism.
