With whimsically hip illustrations by acclaimed illustrator Julia Rothman, every page is an extraordinary (and frame-worthy!) look at all kinds of subjects, including mineral formation, the inside of a volcano, what makes sunsets, monarch butterfly migration, the ecosystem of a rotting log, the parts of a bird, the anatomy of a jellyfish, and much much more. Exploring has never been so fun and easy.

Résumé:
In winter 2006, under the stewardship of philosopher Wolfgang Scheppe, a collective of students from the IUAV University in Venice fanned out to subject their city to a forensic structural mapping. Out of this fieldwork, conducted in the Situationist psychogeography tradition, there developed a three-year urban project that produced an enormous archive comprising tens of thousands of photographs, case studies, movement profiles and statistic data. From this archive, Venice, sited as it is at the junction of three migration corridors, emerges as a classic instance of the increasingly globalized city in which a decimated inner-city population meets armies of tourists and a parallel economy supported by illegal immigrants. In a map that cleverly branches out into visual essays, written essays, data maps and interviews, the globalized territory of Venice is microscopically dissected and defined as an urban metaphor, the city becoming an “atlas of a global situation.”

Résumé:
Almost immediately after the invention of photography, Scottish photographers took their clunky cameras on the road to capture the stories of peoples and communities touched by the forces of British imperialism. For the next thirty years, their journeys would take them far from their homes in the Lowlands to the Canadian wilderness and the treaty ports and rivers of China. ''The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography'' is about the interplay between these photographers' ambitions and the needs and desires of the people they met. Anthony Lee tracks the work of several famous innovators of the art form, including D.O. Hill and Robert Adamson in Edinburgh; the Scottish immigrants William Notman and Alexander Henderson in Montreal; John Thomson in Hong Kong; and Lai Afong. Lee reveals their pictures in the context of migration and the social impact wrought by worldwide trade and competing nationalisms.

Résumé:
This book is a comprehensive investigation into photographic works by artists from the African continent and its diaspora. Taking the politics of the “colonial gaze” as its starting point, Events of the Social looks at the diverse complexity of the nineteenth-century archive through a selection of vintage portraits, cartes de visite, postcards and album pages. Three generations of African artists from the 1940s till now then chart the changing features of African societies through portraiture, exploring notions of the self, gender, sexuality, race, social status and politics. The book also examines landscape and the built environment, showing how architecture and spatial planning convey social order and ideology while reflecting experiences of migration, colonialism, war and industrialization. Another group of artists, born after the mid-1970s, explores issues of social identity, lineage, questions of belonging and personal experiences.

Résumé:
In "Black elegies", Kimberly Juanita Brown examines the form of the elegy and its unique capacity to convey the elongated grief borne of sustained racial violence. Structured around the sensorial, the book moves through sight, sound, and touch to reveal what Okwui Enwezor calls the "national emergency of black grief." With her characteristic literary skill, Brown analyzes the work of major figures including Toni Morrison, Carrie Mae Weems, Audre Lorde, and Marvin Gaye, among others. Brown contemplates recognizable sites of mourning: forced migration and enslavement, bodily violations, imprisonment and death. And she examines sites that do not register immediately as archives of grief: the landscape of southern U.S. slave plantations, a spontaneous street party, a quilt constructed out of the clothing worn by a loved one, a dance performance to hold the memory of history, and an aeolian harp installed at an institute of European art, among others. In this, the book offers a framework of mourning while black, within the parameters of contemporary artistic production.

Résumé:
''Cultures of contagion'' recounts episodes in the history of contagions, from ancient times to the twenty-first century. It considers contagion not only in the medical sense but also as a process, a metaphor, and an interpretive model–as a term that describes not only the transmission of a virus but also the propagation of a phenomenon. The authors describe a wide range of social, cultural, political, and anthropological instances through the prism of contagion–from anti-Semitism to migration, from the nuclear contamination of the planet to the violence of Mao’s Red Guard. The book proceeds glossary style, with a series of short texts arranged alphabetically, beginning with an entry on aluminum and ''environmental contagion'' and ending with a discussion of writing and ''textual resemblance'' caused by influence, imitation, borrowing, and plagiarism. The authors–leading scholars associated with the Center for Historical Research (CRH, Centre de recherches historiques), Paris–consider such topics as the connection between contagion and suggestion, ''waltzmania'' in post-Terror Paris, the effect of reading on sensitive imaginations, and the contagiousness of yawning. They take two distinct approaches: either examining contagion and what it signified contemporaneously, or deploying contagion as an interpretive tool. Both perspectives illuminate unexpected connections, unnoticed configurations, and invisible interactions.
