Résumé:
Wood has always been a stong contributing factor in the creation of interesting architecture. Because of its special physical characteristics, its many possibilities of application and combination with other construction materials, since human beings began building houses, wood has been one of the main building materials. In addition, because of the increasing sensitivity for the protection of resources the ecological potential of wood as a renewable raw material wood has gained in significance. To build with wood has been for years and is still a trend topic, this volume is a road tour of contemporary wood architecture.

Résumé:
For centuries exchanges between the domestic and the foreign have altered and transformed architecture. Today these exchanges have become highly intensified. The Domestic and the Foreign in Architecture attempts to expand the issues in architecture beyond its traditional practice by focusing on the opportunities and limitations in architecture as a cultural and political enterprise. The central theme is how these exchanges manifest themselves in contemporary architecture in terms of its aesthetic potential and its practice, which, in turn, are impacted by broad economic, cultural and political issues. This book traces how diverse cultural encounters inevitably modify conventional categories, standards and codes of architecture, such as domestic identity, its political and economic representations and the negotiations with what is considered foreign. It presents the aspects of architecture that have become crucial, through theoretical reflections by distinguished scholars and interviews with some of the most influential architects.

Résumé:
Mass culture is a fact. Its irresistible vitality and force are enthusiastically exploited by all manner of enterprises, whether network providers for mobile phones, hip lifestyle magazines or trendy fashion labels. Oddly enough, architecture and urban planning have so far failed to exploit the potential offered by mass culture. This book presents the findings of a study by studio Sputnik, a Rotterdam-based architecture practice, of the opportunities that mass culture presents for architecture. "Snooze" analyses products successful in consumer society and relates the patterns behind their success to the city. The nature and importance of communication proves to be pivotal to architecture's role. What does a building signify, what does it communicate? "Snooze" is not about style or form, nor is it about commercial motives or technical ingenuity. It adds a new voice to architectural discourse at the intersection of theory and design. The surprising insights that this book offers are presented in a highly visual essay.

Résumé:
As a concept, Emergence has captured the zeitgeist, embodying the pervasive cultural interest in genetics and biological sciences. In the sciences, Emergence is an explanation of how natural systems have evolved and maintained themselves, and it has also been applied to artificial intelligence, information systems, economics and climate studies. The potential of the mathematics of Emergence that underlie the complex systems of nature is now being realised by engineers and architects for the production of complex architectural forms and effects, in advanced manufacturing of ‘smart’ materials and processes, and in the innovative designs of active structures and responsive environments. This book provides a detailed exploration of the architectural and engineering consequences of this paradigm, and a detailed analysis of geometries, processes and systems to be incorporated into new methods of working.
