Thomas Struth's most recent project, "Making Time," was exhibited at the Prado, Madrid, in the winter and spring of 2007, and is now compiled in this handsome catalogue from Turner. Making Time continues Struth's established work on the subject of public art venues, and consists of photographs depicting the Prado's famous collection and its visitors, photographs that were displayed throughout the Prado during his exhibit, as part of the museum's current ambition to open up fresh perspectives on its holdings. Over the course of two years, Struth made more than 400 images in and around the Prado, showing an "inhabited" public space, and highlighting the interactions between the exhibited paintings and their viewers. This volume also marks the first presentation of Struth's earlier work, from the spring of 2005, on Velazquez's great "Las Meninas" (1656), itself a classic study of spectatorship. The result is a multilayered dialogue between Struth, the Prado, its collection and its visitors.

In the twentieth century, any American driver or passenger would stop at gas stations at least weekly, and not just for gas. Gas stations were also oases offering food and drink, car repairs, directions, maps and, importantly, bathrooms. Yet, beyond their appreciation as roadside novelties, their offerings to American culture, landscape and history have been little photographed. From 1978 to 1981, David Freund analyzed the culture, architecture and landscape of gas stations in more than forty states. The photographs show customers and workers in postures and actions peculiar to gassing up, or just hanging out. Architecture and signage, both corporate and vernacular, beckon passing drivers. Regional landscapes hold and surround gas stations, each with its own landscape of designed plantings or scrappy volunteers. Stations were also outposts for American networks other than petroleum, seen in telephone booths, mailboxes and powerlines. These and all that surrounds them spark recognition and recollection, accruing as elements of a nonlinear American narrative. While Freund’s primary concern is for his photographs to engage and surprise, he acknowledges nostalgia and uses it to imbue his subjects with a compelling sense of belonging. Of more than 200,000 gas stations in the United States at the time of this project, today they and their roles are mostly gone, existing now in memory and in this work. The film "Il deserto rosso" (The Red Desert) by Michelangelo Antonioni, produced in the industrial region around Ravenna, Italy, in 1964, is considered one of the most important works in contemporary film history. Because of its innovative use of color, uncomfortably slow pacing, and existential environment, the film has long held appeal to filmmakers, artists, and photographers. As a response to the film, a joint endeavor between the students at the Academy of fine Arts, Leipzig, led by artists and professors Joachim Brohm and Anna voswinckel, with the photo initiatives Linea di Confine and Osservatorio fotografico, Italy, were asked to create an exhibition of living photographers influenced by the film. The catalog features more than thirty photographers, all associated in some way with the university and photo initiatives. The photographers were asked to provide their reaction to the film along with their associated images. The project was then exhibited at SK Stiftung Kultur (Cologne, September 2017January 2018). Among the featured artists are Joachim Brohm, Guido Guidi, Valentina Seidel, and Francesco Neri.
