Résumé:
This edition of the Dutch architecture journal presents essays in word and image on the designed environments of today, yesterday and tomorrow. Its subjective arguments and personal reflections on the field's practice and discourse consider what is (and is not) happening and is (and is not) being said: Architecture Bulletin reflects on the field and all of its potential significance. This, its third issue, tackles the many manifestations of the city, the power centers in street life, the ways in which public spaces are "hacked" by subversive street artists and the ways in which public space in the average city now extends into the virtual domain. Corollary essays reflect on the impact of the hyper-reality of the shopping mall on social behavior, and on social interventions that improve the livability of architecture.

Résumé:
Stefano Boeri is one of the few practices of international renown that has managed to overcome the difficulties intrinsic to the situation Italy presents for architecture studios and to make of these a virtue. His career as an architect has gone hand in hand with a commitment to teaching, criticism, publishing, politics and cultural agitation, and the projects he has tackled in these fields are numerous. To this we might add an abundant oeuvre unusually productive in terms of Italian parameters including public and private buildings, extending from apartment blocks and offices, a shopping mall and a small art centre in Milan, to more paradigmatic works like the remodelling of La Maddalena Arsenal (Sardinia), the apartment towers of the Vertical Forest in Milan and the Centre Régional de la Méditerranée in Marseille.

Résumé:
This illustrated book looks at why the world's most interesting buildings are becoming the hottest destinations for today's travelers. In the last few decades architecture has become a major focus for travelers, rather than merely a part of a larger itinerary. Illustrated with nearly one hundred color photographs, this series of essays and contributions by scholars, critics, architects, and artists explores the role of architecture in the contemporary tourist imagination. From Mont Saint Michel and the Taj Mahal to Bilbao's Guggenheim museum and the Blur building in Switzerland's lake Neuchâtel, the authors focus on how certain iconic buildings have found their way into the cultural consciousness. At the same time they offer insights as to why other buildings, such as Minnesota's Mall of America and the faux architecture of Las Vegas, have become integral to their regions' tourist economy-and postulate how this success will influence architecture of the future.
Public toilet design

A really well-designed public toilet is a rare and welcome discovery. It adds greatly to the impression made on a building's users -- whether in a restaurant, mall, airport or hotel. Résumé:
A really well-designed public toilet is a rare and welcome discovery. It adds greatly to the impression made on a building's users -- whether in a restaurant, mall, airport or hotel. And, in the case of public toilets in parks and streets, a clean and aesthetically pleasant public toilet leaves the user with a positive opinion of the city as a whole. For much of the 20th century, "cheap and durable" was the rule. That trend is changing. "Public toilet design" presents the best projects made in the last two years, worldwide. There are more than 50 public spaces shown, with the "facilities" well integrated into good design. There are more than 600 full-color photographs. Each project is accompanied by plans and detailed descriptions that show the transformation of the public toilet as its planning, development and construction took shape over the last few years.

Résumé:
London’s Foreign Office Architects are redefining the "shopping center" typology in Istanbul; rather than being an isolated world of consumption, cut off from its urban environment, their "Meydan" mall forms a public square in a new part of town, a place of meetings and encounters. The interior of the central European city, evolved over the centuries, is the role model for this new building. The publication documents Meydan’s development – from the international competition among firms such as BRT Architects, Chapman + Taylor and J.S.K. Architects to its construction – and describes the challenges of concept and design through reports and interviews. The developers of this project have taken on responsibility for urban planning and searched for possible answers to the problems affecting the megacity of Istanbul, in which public squares and green areas are few and far between. The resulting architecture blends into Istanbul’s cityscape in a very remarkable way.

Résumé:
In City/Art anthropologists, literary and cultural critics, a philosopher, and an architect explore how creative practices continually reconstruct the urban scene in Latin America. The contributors, all Latin Americanists, describe how creativity—broadly conceived to encompass urban design, museums, graffiti, film, music, literature, architecture, performance art, and more—combines with nationalist rhetoric and historical discourse to define Latin American cities. Taken together, the essays model different ways of approaching Latin America’s urban centers not only as places that inspire and house creative practices but also as ongoing collective creative endeavors themselves. The essays range from an examination of how differences of scale and point of view affect people’s experience of everyday life in Mexico City to a reflection on the transformation of a prison into a shopping mall in Uruguay, and from an analysis of Buenos Aires’ preoccupation with its own status and cultural identity to a consideration of what Miami means to Cubans in the United States.

Résumé:
Dubai, in its newness, has redefined the notion of authenticity: city and spectacle have been intertwined. Mall culture, airports, and theme parks may seem strange and vacuous in other cities, but in Dubai, they are the essence of life. Shortly before the outbreak of the global pandemic, Dirk Gebhardt and Lars Harmsen visited Dubai. Nowhere in the world had they seen drama and comedy so powerfully together as in Dubai’s theme parks. In the drive to bring more tourists to the UAE, develop the real estate industry, and retain a huge labor force of expatriate workers, Dubai itself resembles and operates in many ways like a theme park. In his essay Simulation City: The Theming of Dubai Jason Carlow explores the uncanny atmosphere of spectacle, spatial control, and remarkable societal and cultural overlaps and adjacencies that have become an integral part of life for many residents of and visitors to contemporary Dubai.

Résumé:
"Brandscaping" - the creation of a three-dimensional microcosm representing the brand is increasingly becoming a characteristic part in the architecture of retail areas, shopping centres, and showrooms. Rising to the challenge from E-commerce and the global competition for customers, companies, project developers, architects and interior architects are reacting with complex concepts which present the brand image, the encounter with the product as an object of desire, as a microcosm, an experience to be perceived the senses. Using the latest technology and features from the entertainment industry, these real and tangible "brand landscapes" lay value on generating an emotional impact, and range from standard shop systems to monumental theme parks. "Brandscaping" presents 15 international projects from the fields of architecture and interior architecture, including Volkswagen AutoStadt, Wolfsburg, Niketown in London, the City Mall Sevens, Düsseldorf, the shopping centre at Leipzig railway station, the Showroom Qiora New York, the shop concept Superga in Italy, and the Migros supermarket chain in Switzerland. Concluding the volume is a documentation of the discussions which took place between image designers, architects and interior architects during a workshop.
