Résumé:
Issue 4 of Deem journal opens with a conversation between visionary artist Theaster Gates—who shares his perspectives around place as the connecting thread in his practice—and Deem co-founders Nu Goteh and Alice Grandoit-Šutka. Gates’s approach to redeeming and sacralizing space as place lays the groundwork for a multitude of other interviews, essays, and interventions that address how we make place from spatial experiences. As always, we welcomed perspectives from contributors of varying backgrounds, interests, and disciplines, and it is our hope that this investigation will help us all think about place in ways both new and old.

Résumé:
Mapping London: Making Sense of the City is a beautiful, compelling anthology of over six centuries of London maps, tracing the mesmerizing evolution of the city and exploring the hopes and fears of its inhabitants as history unfolds. The book is a cartographic journey, charting the influence of Roman city planning, Saxon feudalism, Medieval tumult, imperial hubris, contemporary town planning and more on this great metropolis. In this comprehensive survey the maps are allowed to speak for themselves, revealing not only their political and social context, but also the dreams of their makers and the drama of their creation. Often these maps are objects of great skill and beauty and the names of the greatest of their makers are still revered today. A lavishly illustrated hardback book, Mapping London explores the city through the ages in all its labyrinthine glory.

Résumé:
The history of European landscape design has its beginnings in the early cultures of the Mediterranean. Again and again, especially during the Renaissance, ancient parks and gardens have been imitated as archetypes. The park is still a site of design activity today: human beings use living material to create an artificial landscape, a paradise. This book not only recounts the history of the garden—it conjures it up before the reader’s eyes, from the Garden of Eden and the Hanging Gardens of Nebuchadnezzar to the first book on botany and the gardens of the Renaissance, from the invention of the lawnmower to the land art movement in the United States, Hängende Gärten II (Hanging Gardens II) at the Hanover Expo by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, and the Gazebo-Berg (Gazebo Mountain) of the Swiss artist couple Studer/van den Berg at the 2005 world’s fair in Japan. Every single "station" of this journey through gardens and time is illustrated by an entire double page, with pointedly written texts and an abundance of historical and contemporary images.

Résumé:
Since its publication twenty years ago, Brian Massumi's pioneering ''Parables for the virtual'' has become an essential text for interdisciplinary scholars across the humanities. Massumi views the body and media such as television, film, and the internet as cultural formations that operate on multiple registers of sensation. Renewing and assessing William James's radical empiricism and Henri Bergson's philosophy of perception through the filter of the postwar French philosophy of Deleuze, Guattari, and Foucault, Massumi links a cultural logic of variation to questions of movement, affect, and sensation. Replacing the traditional opposition of literal and figural with distinctions between stasis and motion and between actual and virtual, Massumi tackles related theoretical issues by applying them to cultural mediums as diverse as architecture, body art, the digital art of Stelarc, and Ronald Reagan's acting career. The result is an intriguing combination of cultural theory, science, and philosophy that asserts itself in a crystalline and multifaceted argument. This twentieth anniversary edition includes a new preface in which Massumi situates the book in relation to developments since its publication and outlines the evolution of its main concepts. It also includes two short texts, "Keywords for Affect" and "Missed Conceptions about Affect," in which Massumi explicates his approach to affect in ways that emphasize the book's political and philosophical stakes.
