Résumé:
Amsterdam-based landscape architect Michael van Gessel has been working with, rather than against, nature for the past three decades. He expresses his ethos by quoting the English author and landscape architect Joseph Spence: "Respect for the past, combined with a curiosity for what is and a feeling for what could be. This is the dynamo that starts the engine of the design." Accordingly, van Gessel embraces a diversity of projects, from private gardens to urban planning. He supervised the renovation of Amsterdam's Vondel Park, drew up the master plan to restore the landscaping around Utretch's Castle De Haar and managed to integrate the inner courtyards of the Ministry of Agriculture in The Hague into the urban fabric. This comprehensive volume places van Gessel's myriad approaches into context and illuminates his pivotal role in the formation of contemporary Dutch landscape architecture.

Résumé:
House brings us up-to-date on Holl's most recent residences and collects his best-known projects from the past including a total of fifteen of Holl's residential works. Rather than having an unvarying style, these houses aim at the sometimes elusive ideal of the specific. Each house tackles a different design challenge, using site as the physical and metaphysical foundation upon which to build. Fusing building and situation, Holl creates a unique expression in each home. Beautiful and innovative, the houses span the globe, ranging from a secluded location in Hawaii, to the Catskill Mountains of New York, to Martha's Vineyard, to the Hague in the Netherlands. Each project is accompanied by Holl's charming watercolor building studies as well as an insightful explanation of how he was inspired by the land upon which the house sits and how the sumptuous materials utilized reflect the spirit of the location.

Résumé:
In response to the theme of the 2016 Venice Biennial, Portugal presented a site-specific pavilion occupying an urban front in the midst of physical and social regeneration on Giudecca, an archipelago just south of Venice. The pavilion exhibited four works by Pritzger Prize winner Álvaro Siza (born 1933) on the theme of social housing Campo di Marte (Venice), Schilderswijk (The Hague), Schlesisches Tor (Berlin) and Bairro da Bouça (Porto) revealing his collaborative experience with the local inhabitants and unique understanding of the European city and citizenship. These projects resulted in the creation of neighborhood spaces aimed at a more tolerant, multicultural society, a subject important to the current European political agenda. This book unveils the curatorial process and the display of these works in Venice. Included are images of Siza’s recent visits to the neighborhoods, plus a presentation of the changes triggered by immigration, ghettoization, gentrification and “touristification.”

Résumé:
Although an architect by profession, H.Th. Wijdeveld (1885-1987) is best known for Wendingen, the 'magazine for the decorative arts and architecture' founded by him in 1918. One of the peaks of Wendingen was the series devoted to the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, for which Wijdeveld designed everything himself. Its graphic design caused a sensation and soon spawned a school of 'Wijdeveld typography'. Typical features of his designs are the game played with brass rules taken from the type case and stacked together to form letters, and the page layout in lines and blocks, what his contemporaries called 'typographical brickwork'. This publication, which accompanied an exhibition in Museum Meermanno (The Hague) devoted to his typography, features all the exhibits - posters, books and other graphic work by Wijdeveld himself and that of several of his successors, notably Anton Kurvers. Design by Piet Gerards.

Résumé:
This monograph brings together the work of the Spanish architect and urban planner Manuel de Solà-Morales in book form for the first time. The publication concentrates on his most important projects and realizations of recent years. Solà-Morales has achieved successful interventions in the urban landscape in many places in Europe: from Antwerp to Trieste, from Groningen to Porto, and from Barcelona to The Hague. For Solà-Morales the city does not consist of abstractions, but of concrete, tangible things. His projects could be regarded as an urban architecture, at the interface of architecture and urban planning. By intervening in this physical reality in a precise manner, with a building, with public space, or sometimes with nothing more than the layout of a public space, but always with concrete things, Solà-Morales effects changes in the city that often transcend the physical or spatial dimensions of the intervention. All the projects are documented extensively in word and image. Besides texts by Manuel de Solà-Morales himself, the book includes a comprehensive essay by Kenneth Frampton about the architect's work and ideas.

Résumé:
The work of Benthem Crouwel Architects is sober, practical and functional - wholly in line with the Dutch tradition of soundness and reliability. At the same time there is wide-spread admiration for the expressive and aesthetic values of the designs, which achieve maximum effect with a minimum of means. This profusely illustrated publication presents the complete oeuvre spanning twenty years on the basis of five themes. "Living" focuses on the private houses and apartment buildings such as those for Jager, Nieuwland and Soutelande. "Working" gives a picture of such diverse projects as the Amsterdam office for Wagons Lits, the Provincial Hall in Groningen, de Malie Tower in The Hague and the Mors factory in Opmeer. "Shopping" describes recent projects in Leidschendam, Amsterdam Zuid-Oost and Schiphol. "Travelling" likewise features various projects for Schiphol, supplemented with proposals for Amsterdam's North/South underground line and Lelystad airport. Finally in "Visiting" we encounter the firm's many recreational and museological projects such as the popcluster 013 in Tilburg, new major spaces for the RAI and Ahoy' complexes, the so-called cultural strip in Amstelveen, and the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam.
