Résumé:
In an age of digital cameras and computer renderings, the tradition of drawing and assembling an architectural sketchbook seems at once either willfully eccentric and or charmingly retrograde. But its profound importance to architecture and urban planning endures. Italian Cities and Landscapes is a compact and lovely sketch book created by architect William H. Fain during a six month fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. Exploring the Italian city and countryside by bicycle, Fain used colored pencil to sketch scenes of the street life, the magnificent landscapes, and the architectural marvels of Italy. Italian Cities and Landscapes shows that for the creative individual, documenting travels through drawing continues to be a valuable means of learning to see, understand, and design.

Smart Growth advocates, environmentalists, and New Urbanists have all tried in their own ways to spread the message of reforming current land use patterns. Their solutions are often criticized for being overly prescriptive, opposed to growth, or nostalgic, respectively. Suburban Transformations offers an alternative to these practices while synthesizing many of the ideas and proposals that they put forth. Five case studies provide fully expressed examples of the process, beginning with a sophisticated system of mapping and culminating in computer projections of likely future outcomes, giving the designer the ability to project changes in the community fabric and adding that knowledge to the designers kit of place-making tools.

Founded in 1871 as one of the first full-fledged colleges for women, Smith is known for its beautiful campus set in an idyllic New England landscape. A walk around its grounds is like a comprehensive tour through American architecture from the eighteenth century to the present. The campus includes such diverse buildings as Peabody – Stearn's Queen Anne-style College Hall; the neo-Georgian Quadrangle by Ames, Dodge and Putnam; Skidmore, Owings – Merrill's International Style Cutter and Ziskind houses; as well as the postmodern Bass Science Center and Young Science Library by Shepley, Bullfinch, Richardson, and Abbott. The university's most recent additions include the Brown Fine Arts Center, designed by the Polshek Partnership; the Olin Fitness Center, by Leers Weinzapfel Associates; and the Campus Center by Weiss/Manfredi.

Résumé:
Grant Jones, founding principal of the noted landscape architecture firm Jones – Jones, has practiced ecological design for more than 30 years and has been a pioneer in river planning, scenic highway design, zoo design, and landscape aesthetics. The latest addition to our successful Source Books in Landscape Architecture series, Grant Jones/Jones – Jones ILARIS, focuses on Jones's "green print" plan for Puget Sound in Washington State. Working in collaboration with the Trust for Public Lands and using new GIS technology, Jones – Jones developed the software tool ILARIS. This CAD-like tool helps to evaluate the aesthetic resources of landscape regions and is used as a basis for future planning. The Puget Sound model can be applied to other landscapes at risk. Including an interview with Grant Jones, critical essays discussing his work, as well as numerous diagrams, plans, and photographs, Grant Jones/Jones – Jones ILARIS is a thorough study of an important project.

Patterns - bold, colorful, muted, delicate, intricate, splashy, spare, figurative, abstract, dizzying, calming - are the subject in this comprehensive reference, the first to examine pattern as an essential part of twentieth-century design history. With stunning color plates and lively text, Lesley Jackson takes readers on a tour of the development of twentieth-century patterns from around the world. Résumé:
"Seventy-nine short essays on design" brings together the best of designer Michael Bierut's critical writing—serious or humorous, flattering or biting, but always on the mark. Bierut is widely considered the finest observer on design writing today. Covering topics as diverse as Twyla Tharp and ITC Garamond, Bierut's texts pull design culture into crisp focus. He touches on classics, like Massimo Vignelli and the cover of The Catcher in the Rye, as well as newcomers, like McSweeney's Quarterly Concern and color-coded terrorism alert levels. Along the way Nabakov's Pale Fire; Eero Saarinen; the paper clip; Celebration, Florida; the planet Saturn; the ClearRx pill bottle; and paper architecture all fall under his pen. His experience as a design practitioner informs his writing and gives it truth. In "Seventy-nine short essays on design", designers and nondesigners alike can share and revel in his insights.
