Résumé:
By bringing together the voices of a number of curators, scientists, scholars, designers, and artists, the XXII Triennale di Milano seeks to engage its visitors with questions of climate change, migration, artificial intelligence, politics, gender, labour, economics, social justice, and natural histories. This exhibition catalog highlights objects and concepts at all scales that reconsider humans' relationship with their environment, including research into both natural and social ecosystems. The aim is to trace design's ability to move us into a more constructive sense of indebtedness toward nature. This volume will appeal to the design community as well as a broader readership and scholars who study the sociological, economic, political, and personal ramifications of design as it relates to the environment.

Résumé:
Since founding Studio Orta in 1993, the Paris-based husband-and-wife team of Lucy and Jorge Orta has produced an extensive body of work that addresses universal concerns about community, shelter, migration, and sustainable development. Beyond merely addressing these issues artistically, their work suggests solutions by modeling fresh approaches to social dilemmas. Their often-playful projects incorporate elements of fashion, art, and architecture, which they combine with performances, multimedia events, and public debates. Featuring hundreds of drawings and photographs, Lucy + Jorge Orta: Food, Water, Life presents recent works that fall into the categories of food, water, and the environment. An interview by curator and critic Hou Hanru provides insight into the artists' processes and motivations.

Résumé:
This volume takes Artists for Democracy (AFD) as a starting point to explore the entanglement of artistic practices with transnational solidarities shaped by migration and political mobilization. AFD formed in London in 1974 to give "material and cultural support to liberation movements worldwide" and to use art as "a way of making global political struggles visible." Over the next three years, the collective arranged several large-scale festivals dedicated to the relief of political crises in Chile, Vietnam, Indochina and the United States. Through detailed contextualization, scholastic and artistic commissions and extensive archival documentation, "Precarious solidarities" applies a variety of lenses—artistic, social, political, historical and geographic—to explore AFD’s legacy today.

Résumé:
Looking beyond East/West and North/South divisions, the ''Art and solidarity reader'' asks: what were and are the alternative circuits of survival and solidarity among artists and activists from nonaligned nations and politically challenging contexts? What do these trajectories of solidarity lead to, in and outside of art worlds? How can traveling exhibitions, museological displays, the idea of ''the museum in exile,'' artistic actions and performative groupings become tools for political struggle against oppression and social fragmentation? The ''Art and solidarity reader'' gathers microhistories from the 1970s to today, rethinking our collective responses to the multiple crises related to migration, colonialism, rising radicalization, religious conflicts, class divisions, new technology, heteronormativity and environmental urgencies.

Résumé:
''Palermo Atlas'' is an interdisciplinary analysis of the city of Palermo commissioned by Manifesta 12 and undertaken by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. The research explores the architecture, archaeology and anthropology of the city, its historical archives and personal stories. On one hand, it is a mosaic of identities, cultures and ecosystems, the result of centuries of encounters and exchanges between civilisations. On the other, it is the stage of the great social and environmental challenges of our time, from the migration crisis to climate change. Drawing on this complexity, ''Palermo Atlas'' sets out to host a reflection on social and environmental renewal, outlining a research model capable of making a long-term impact on the city and its inhabitants.

Résumé:
At the beginning of the economic crisis in 2007, housing became a central commodity in the short-circuit system of mortgages granted to private individuals and businesses. In the aftermath of the crisis, and in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic, housing—as a right, in its most radical form—re-emerged due to local housing, migration, and health emergencies. In light of an eclipse of a general discourse on housing, a new secular and international ethics arose, both foreign and superior to nation states. This book returns to a broader notion of housing: using metaphors of sanitary and salvific reinstatement, it retrieves case studies from the 1950s for re-conceptualizing the housing question in contemporary architecture and visual arts.

Résumé:
Compelling and accessible, this Very Short Introduction challenges the perception of borders as passive lines on a map, revealing them instead to be integral forces in the economic, social, political, and environmental processes that shape our lives. Highlighting the historical development and continued relevance of borders, Alexander C. Diener and Joshua Hagen offer a powerful counterpoint to the idea of an imminent borderless world, underscoring the impact borders have on a range of issues, such as economic development, inter- and intra-state conflict, global terrorism, migration, nationalism, international law, environmental sustainability, and natural resource management. Diener and Hagen demonstrate how and why borders have been, are currently, and will undoubtedly remain hot topics across the social sciences and in the global headlines for years to come.

Résumé:
Writing the City into Being is Bremner’s collection of essays, spanning more than a decade of work on Johannesburg. It is both an unflinching analysis of the characteristics of a city and a work of imagination – a bringing of the evasive city into being through writing. Johannesburg has become a touchstone in critical thinking on the development of the twenty-first-century city, attracting scholars from around the world who seek to understand how cities are changing in the face of urban migration in all its myriad forms and the inflow of foreign capital and interest. Writing the City into Being is an important book for those seeking to understand cities in a rapidly changing and fragmenting world. Lindsay Bremner is a guide to the city of Johannesburg, and one of its most incisive commentators.

Résumé:
The complex legacy of this most notable period is discussed from a different perspective by each contributor. Peter S. Reed details the rise of modern architecture during the war—housing designs that used the latest ideas in prefabricated construction methods, lightweight materials, innovative technologies, and a corporate and institutional aesthetic that helped popularize modernism as the appropriate image of American industrial might and corporate success. Robert Friedel documents the development of new materials, especially plastics, and discusses techniques for employing traditional materials in novel ways. Margaret Crawford explores the struggle of women and blacks for public housing. Finally, Michael Sorkin, architect and writer, explores the migration of certain values and aesthetics from the necessities of war to the choices of peace. Among these are images of speed, camouflage, ruin, totalization, and flight.

Résumé:
''Dialect'' covers three years of state violence for nine young Moroccan migrants exiled in Kafka-esque limbo in Seville, southern Spain. When underage migrants enter the country illegally and cannot be verified as adults, their custody remains in the hands of the state – subjecting them to a lengthy process of up to three years to gain legal status. In this state of suspension and liminality, Beltrán engages with the body as a metaphor: using a carefully articulated language between photography, performance and collaboration, the weight of dead time is registered upon the shoulders of these young men, entering into dialogue with their memories, journeys, and the humiliating mundanity of waiting and migration. Alongside video works and choreographed dance, ''Dialect'' breaks new documentary ground to shine a critical light on practices of bureaucratic oppression.
