Sa séparation, en 1924, d'avec sa maîtresse Lily Brik, lui donne l'occasion de ce voyage. Profondément bouleversé par cette rupture, Maïakovski envisage pour commencer un tour du monde. Contraint par des raisons financières (il se fait voler son argent à Paris où il fait escale pour rejoindre le port de Saint-Nazaire), il se contente d'un séjour sur le continent américain. Après une traversée qui le mène à La Havane, il entre aux États-Unis par le Mexique, en se faisant passer pour peintre - sa position de poète officiel donnant souvent à ses voyages un caractère de propagande, son visa lui est plusieurs fois refusé. Lacking the historical rootedness of European cities, the American city was open to individual interpretation, definition, and ownership. Beginning with the White City of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and the efforts to commodify the concept city through photography, Gordon shows how the American city has always been a product of the collision between the dominant conceptualization, shaped by contemporary media, and the spectator. "Lots of Parking" examines a neglected aspect of this rise of the automobile: the impact on America not of cars in motion but of cars at rest. While most studies have tended to focus on highway construction and engineering improvements to accommodate increasing flow and the desire for speed, John A. Jakle and Keith A. Sculle examine a fundamental feature of the urban, and suburban, scene — the parking lot. Elle en paya le prix toute sa vie. Elle s'appelait Mamah Borthwick Cheney. Lui n'était autre que Frank Lloyd Wright, l'enfant génial et rebelle de l'architecture américaine à qui Mamah et son mari Edwin Cheney avaient demandé, en 1903, de construire leur nouvelle maison. En 1909, tombée entre-temps follement amoureuse du célèbre architecte, Mamah choqua une époque pudibonde et dévote en quittant son mari et ses deux jeunes enfants pour suivre Frank Lloyd Wright en Europe. Ce dernier, tout aussi épris, laissait derrière lui une Amérique stupéfaite, une épouse et six enfants... Enchaînés par la passion, mais hantés par une culpabilité intolérable, ils firent la une de la presse américaine durant leurs séjours en Allemagne, en Italie et à Paris, lors de la grande crue de 1910... Mais aucun journal à sensation n'aurait pu prévoir ce qui adviendrait à ce couple maudit de retour aux Etats-Unis, en 1914. La violence du dénouement verra ? au-delà du déchirement des familles Cheney et Wright ? le monde pétrifié. Pour la première fois nous est contée l'histoire de l'émancipation très en avance sur son temps de Mamah Borthwick, et de son amour pour l'un des plus grands maîtres de l'architecture moderne.

The city has become an important new starting point in the quest for architecture. At a time of extreme urbanisation, unharnessed urban growth has led many architects to rethink the way that buildings are designed for the global metropolis. It is no longer practical or desirable to impose the standardised, idealized planning of the 20th century. Rather than viewing the city as a fixed entity, architects are now seeking direct inspiration from the existing urban environment and learning from its ever-changing state that resists predetermination. The city, in all its complexity, has become a realm of invention and a space for possibilities where new designs can be tested. This is as apparent in the work that architects are undertaking in the informal settlements, or favelas, of Latin America, as in the more regulated spaces of Chicago, London or Tokyo. Favouring an inclusive way of viewing the city, no aspect of the urban world is any longer rejected outright, and architects and urban designers instead find potential and learn from the underlying dynamics of the contemporary city. This attitude highlights the generative capacities of the city and finds new ways of engaging it. At the very least, it advances an architectural thinking that engages the city on its own ground, abets its potential and seeks opportunities in the existing condition.
