Résumé:
As life expectancy is extended, medical procedures continually advance and competition between health care providers intensifies, hospital design becomes increasingly important. The idea that patients benefit from their surroundings has been acknowledged for some time, but it is only recently that this concept has become the key to architectural solutions when building or redesigning hospitals and health care facilities. Drawing on over 60 examples from across the world, this volume illustrates the contemporary approach to hospital architecture. Today, architects and interior designers are striving to combat the typical sterile hospital atmosphere with innovative and exciting concepts, whilst still, of course, maintaining a high level of hygiene and functionality. The projects chosen range from new private clinics to extensions and conversions of large inner-city clinical centers and specialized hospitals.

Hospital architecture reflects society in a state of flux. How do we care for our patients? What working environments do we offer caregivers? How does the hospital fit into our cities? When it comes to planning a hospital, architects are not only faced with the challenge of meaningfully combining function and construction. They also design rooms that temporarily serve patients, staff and relatives as a working and living environment. Christine Nickl-Weller and Hans Nickl have been engaged in the field of hospital construction for 40 years. From their rich wealth of experience in practical work and academic research, they view the hospital on a variety of levels. This holistic view is enriched by contributions from renowned authors from disciplines as diverse as psychology, health management, landscape architecture and art history.

Résumé:
The work of Albert Wimmer is characterized by his incessant drive to find ideal answers to the constantly changing demands on architecture. His projects set international standards, also in stadium architecture. His winning entry for the construction of the new Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck was the foundation for his work in stadium construction. The stadiums in Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Nicosia followed. Albert Wimmer is therefore responsible for three of the four Austrian stadiums for the EURO 2008 tournament. Striking architectural design elements characterize the impressive appearance of his stadiums. The underlying functional, economical and social framework conditions pose a new challenge for architecture: the connection between functionalism and experience. Contributions written by internationally respected social and cultural scientists and by architecture theoreticians discuss the social, economical and cultural development of football today.

Over the years, hospitals, psychiatric institutions and hospice facilities for the elderly have been subject to radical change. To a great extent, these buildings--their amenities and accommodations--have been shaped by developments in medicine and government, shifts in societal and patient perceptions, as well as evolution in architectural ideologies and theories. Healthcare Architecture in the Netherlands describes the historical evolution of industry-specific design in the healthcare arena, providing a detailed chronological overview from the emergence of healthcare architecture as its own genre within architectural practice to the most recent innovative complexes. It also features approximately 50 buildings from the last 150 years, with illustrations and detailed descriptions, plus a series of texts that addresses aspects of national and international architecture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in relation to the health care sector.

Résumé:
At the inaugural festivities of the Moscow Palace of Young Pioneers in 1962, a Soviet news agency enthusiastically reported, “In this house, the walls will teach!” Propagandistic, yes, but this prescriptive attitude about the potential of architecture to shape modern life was implicit in much of the architecture of the 20th century. This collection of 12 essays and 24 case studies from leading architects and academics examines the architecture and programming of mid-century youth centers across Europe, from Utrecht to Manchester. The organization of these centers around leisure activities partially concealed their educational (and ultimately political) goals: their pedagogical power could be found not only in their physical design, but also in the way they were used and inhabited by the children themselves. Contributors include Tom Avermaete, Peter Blundell Jones, Jennifer Mack, Susan Reid, Sue Robertson, Piet Vollaard and many others.

In a follow-up to thel monograph "Design for kids" (Images Publishing, 2007), here Sharon Exley and Peter Exley go about expanding on the key philosophies behind their unique practice. Namely, that play is an invitation to "Architecture is fun." Through architecture, play can be manifest, challenged, and celebrated. Finding out who will play (and live, work, and learn) in our buildings is an intriguing challenge. The firm likes to discover the architectural catalysts that will give character to a building. Often this involves the universal language of Play. Play fits all bodies. Play is accessible. Play inspires innovation. Play puts us in the present. Play engages us. Play is memorable. Play connects us to others and to the world. This illustrated book offers a glimpse into the firm's interdisciplinary and participatory processes and how it believes that architecture and play are transformative.

If you can set up your laptop anywhere, what is the meaning of the dedicated workspace? 'New work, new workspace' argues that designated space is still needed, but that it is changing fast. As collaborative interaction is favoured over individual toil, with millenials and Gen X taking a very different attitude to work, and as social upheaval and technological innovation influence the form nthat the places take in which we are employed forever. Metrics for measuring the effectiveness of workspace show that good design, which is focused on the environment and wellbeing that a workforce needs, is still valued. At the same time, more generic spaces, such as co-working spaces, have to fit everyone – or at least all of the target community. Detailed case studies showcase all the places where people work – in large and small offices, in home spaces, in ateliers and workshops and architects’ studios.

Résumé:
The construction and design of school buildings in Germany faces major challenges. Particularly in metropolitan areas, student numbers are continuously rising and, according to all forecasts, population growth is set to continue in the coming years. This is why new school buildings, including extensions and renovations of existing school buildings, are one of the central topics of investment policy throughout Germany today. Approximately 5.5 billion euros will be spent from 2017 to 2026 on the refurbishment and/or expansion of existing schools; about 40 new school buildings will be erected. Against this backdrop, the exhibition initiated and curated by Beate Engelhorn at Aedes Architecture Forum presents 12 contemporary school buildings in Europe that are exemplary for the implementation of current educational and urban planning models. The exhibition will be introduced by a two-day conference with numerous contributions from experts from Germany and abroad.
