Résumé:
The model industrial village of Port Sunlight was founded by the soap manufacturer W. H. Lever (later Lord Leverhulme) in 1888 for the factory workers of his firm of Lever Brothers. The village was acclaimed from the first as exemplifying the best in English town planning and house design, and greatly influenced subsequent industrial villages such as Bournville, and the garden city movement more generally. This guide considers the village in its historical context, with particular emphasis on the planning and architectural aspects. It explains the social and visual significance of Port Sunlight and the reasons for its being unique in the history of town planning, as well as looking at the way its development was influenced by changing fashions in civic design. The relevance of Lever’s own character and interests – his social conscience, his love of art and beauty and his architectural enthusiasms – is also examined. Two tours, one for pedestrians and one for car drivers, which include and describe the most significant buildings of the village, are an additional feature of the guide.

Résumé:
Current design of apartment buildings is facing challenges of philosophy and form. Past approaches no longer sustain new demands and require innovative thinking. The need for a new outlook is propelled by fundamental changes that touch upon environmental, economic, cultural and social aspects that led to the writing of this book. The depletion of non-renewable natural resources and climate change are a few of the environmental challenges that prompted designers to reconsider conceptual approaches in favour of ones that promote a better suitability between buildings and their environments. Concepts that minimize the building?s carbon footprint, passive solar gain, net-zero structures and water harvesting system are some of the contemporary strategies that architects and builders are integrating into their thought processes and design. Increasing costs of material, labour, land and infrastructure have posed economic challenges with affordability being paramount among them. The need to do with less brings about concepts that include adaptable dwellings, and smaller-sized yet quality-designed housing. Social challenges are also drawing attention.

As population growth and urbanization pick up speed worldwide, the need for high-rise, high-density residential architecture is becoming ever more acute. As Residential Towers shows, this branch of architecture is ready for that demand, with creative approaches to meeting the social and architectural challenges inherent in housing a large number of people in a small amount of ground space. Taking readers to cities on five continents, the book presents analyses of eighty architecturally significant tower blocks in a way that makes it possible to compare approaches and see the effects of innovations.

The construction of domestic privacy has been a gradual process which has transformed the physical space. Perceptions of self and our relationship with the exterior have also shifted. The house is a protected environment which facilitates tranquillity, privacy, withdrawal, and concentration, away from the public realm. Finding thresholds to develop communication in the intermediate space, not entirely public but in fact a shared place of social encounters, remains a key issue for architects today. With contributions by Stephen Bates, Javier Mozas, and Aurora Fernádez, this volume dedicates itself to examining strategies in how privacy can be built in the collective housing environment.

Résumé:
Paradoxically, the historical legacy of Korean housing is both heroic and mundane. Until recently, the nation’s rapid urbanisation fuelled the creation of new regions of high-density dwellings, while cycles of urban renewal continue to push the radical disjunction between new and historical fabrics. Yet the ongoing impasse between developmental pressures and design progress has reduced housing to its basic elements. A current wave of architects has begun formulating new, efficient syntaxes with nuanced social qualities. While the works in this volume represent unique solutions, what we can learn from their innovations goes far further, towards making conscious typological advances.
