In 1925, the artists Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious moved to the village of Great Bardfield in the countryside of Essex, England. Over time, other artists came to the village, forming a community of artists and designers that remains active today. In the 1950s, these artists, including Bawden, Ravilious, John Aldridge, Michael Rothenstein, and Marianne Straub, among others, held now-famous “open house” exhibitions, displaying their modernist works to the public in their own homes. This illustrated book explores Jeckyll's designs in architecture, furniture, metalwork, and interiors. It is the definitive study of Jeckyll’s life and work, and it presents his notable buildings and diverse examples of his decorative arts. Susan Weber Soros and Catherine Arbuthnott examine Jeckyll’s most important architectural commissions, among them the extravagant five-story Cambridge town house, Rance’s Folly. They also discuss the interiors he designed as well as the remarkable furniture and metalwork designs for which he is best known today, including the “Four Seasons Gates” that were exhibited in Paris and Vienna. This book is the catalogue for the first exhibition devoted to the work of Thomas Jeckyll. The exhibition will be open at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture from July 17 through October 19, 2003.

In the living room, the great stone floor flows riverlike toward the horizon of Wright–designed built-in sofas and large-paned casement windows, where views open to balconies, to forest, and to cascading falls. From here “the hatch” opens to the flowing stream below. Pools and the waters of Bear Run were beautiful and for swimming. Relaxed elegance was the order of the day. Delicacy, softness, tactility are everywhere in evidence.

The Paris-based architects opened their 2015 lecture at Harvard University with a manifesto: study and create an inventory of the existing situation; densify without compressing individual space; promote user mobility, access, choice; and most importantly, never demolish. Freedom of Use reflects on these core values to present a fluid narrative of Lacaton and Vassal s oeuvre, articulated through processes of accumulation, addition, and extension. The architects describe built and unbuilt work, from a house in Niger made of little more than branches; to the expansive Nantes School of Architecture; to a public square in Bordeaux where, after months of study, their design solution was: do nothing.

Canadian architect Fred Hollingsworth designed his first house in 1946. Since then he has created some of the most innovative homes of the twentieth century. As part of the 2019 Biennale d’architecture et de paysage in Versailles, France, MOS constructed Petite École, a small, open-air pavilion to house educational workshops for children. It is a place for looking and making, and for making and looking, constructed with 688 aluminum pieces modeled, flattened, cut, folded, prefabricated, shipped, and then assembled onsite. It is made to be taken down and reassembled elsewhere. It is designed to be easily understood, made of simple building elements: a long, low roof with columns and stacked beams holding it up. Undertaken during various design workshops, single page design exercises written by architects were assembled into a large book and given to children. "A Book on Making a Petite École" features an expanded collection of these exercises. Each exercise includes playful illustrations of its steps, starting a conversation about how designers look at, think about, teach, and imagine the foundations of design.

This approach is most evident in the "great roofs" that house Endo-designed offices, such as Rooftecture N (Nisinomiya, Hyogo, 1998), or spaces for relaxation and meetings, such as Rooftecture T (Fukui, 1997), as well as private homes, such as Springtecture H (Harima, 1998) and Rooftecture M (Maruoka, 2001). In 'Aurelia', Mavor takes special interest in the fairy tale’s gastronomy, including Alice’s Wonderland cake marked eat me, the sugar of the witch’s house in ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and the more disturbing ingestions of cannibalism, as in the Brothers Grimm’s ‘The Juniper Tree’, where a murdered boy sings through the mouth of a bird: ‘My mother she killed me. My father he ate me.’ Moving beyond this, Mavor discovers the fairy-tale realm in more surprising places: the tragic candy-land poetry of the 1950s ‘genius’ child-poet Minou Drouet; the subterranean world of enchantment in the cave paintings of Lascaux; the brown fairies of African American poet Langston Hughes; and Miwa Yanagi’s black-and-white, bloody photograph of the Grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood holding one another in the cut open belly of the wolf, as an allegory of the victims of Hiroshima. Through the lens of the fairy tale Mavor reads the world of literature and art as both magical and political.
