Résumé:
Twenty-five years ago, kister scheithauer gross completed its first brick building, the Institute for Biology in Halle. The replicated used brick of the façade is situated in the city centre in a self-evident way, and stands there today, still untouched by time. This is the starting point for the exhibition, which presents earlier brick buildings by the firm anew, along with current projects and buildings. Building in brick implies an ability to adapt to a location and its atmosphere as well as social structures. The regional identity and character of cities are often associated with a specific type of brick. At a time of digital production, brick factories today are almost anachronistic places, where elementary work processes with lots of manual work take place and the brick is given its specific sand-coloured, reddish-orange, or sometimes greenish shade through the firing of the minerals in the clay soil. Each stone is thus a unique specimen and as a haptically rich product also helps the architectural project tell its own story. On the basis of filigree paper models set on brick bases, the exhibition presents eight projects by kister scheithauer gross, which has been designing and working with the sustainable and sensual material for a quarter of a century.

Résumé:
In landscape architecture, representation has become the subject of contention and much discussion. While computer techniques have been a catalyst for change across the field of design as a whole, nowhere have the conventions of representation been called into question more than in landscape architecture – which in itself is undergoing a process of reinvention. With the onset of rapid urbanisation and our shifting relationship with nature, landscape architecture has proved a potent lens for expressing a wider dialogue taking place in the world. It is, however, only through the introduction of innovative forms of representation – whether digital, analogue or hybrid – that one most vividly sees the emergence of the new. In this book, Diana Balmori explores notions of representation in the discipline at large and across time. She takes us back to landscape design’s roots in the seventeenth century in France and the eighteenth century in England, when it first grappled with questions of imagined exterior space. She explores the discipline’s relationship to painting and the influence of cartography with its bird's-eye views, topographic sections and perspectives. She highlights how new attempts at representation by modern landscape artists such as Patricia Johanson, Ian Hamilton Finlay and David Hockney continue to wrestle with the depiction of landscape.

Résumé:
From the first scribbling on papyrus to the emergence of the e-book, this wide-ranging overview of the history of the book provides a fascinating look at one of the most efficient, versatile, and enduring technologies ever developed. The author traces the evolution of the book from the rarefied world of the hand-copied and illuminated volume in ancient and medieval times, through the revolutionary impact of Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press, to the rise of a publishing culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the subsequent impact of new technologies on this culture. Many of the great individual titles of the past two millennia are discussed as well as the range of book types and formats that have emerged in the last few hundred years, from serial and dime novels to paperbacks, children’s books, and Japanese manga. The volume ends with a discussion of the digital revolution in book production and distribution and the ramifications for book lovers, who can’t help but wonder whether the book will thrive—or even survive—in a form they recognize. Martyn Lyons is professor of history at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and the author of A History of Reading and Writing in the Western World (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009) and Reading Culture and Writing Practices in Nineteenth-Century France (University of Toronto Press, 2008).

This volume presents a new narrative of design, situated somewhere between plant life and ornament, nature and artifice. Through essays by several authors it explores the ornament’s role with respect to morphogenesis, by which the object is continually transformed through an evolving dynamic of forms. With the arrival of the digital age, the ornament’s role in design has been greatly modified. No longer a simple motif, it is used as an animated form. At the intersection of information sciences and biology, designers utilise 3D printing to create carefully calculated objects based on organic growth. With contributions by Spyros Papapetros, Marie-Ange Brayer, and others.

Résumé:
Over the past decade, a seismic shift in economic and political forces has transformed life in the second-largest city on the West Coast, situated at the most heavily trafficked international border crossing in the world. Tijuana’s newfound wealth and haphazard expansion have changed patterns of migration for the city’s many artists, who once routinely moved north to Los Angeles but are now staying or returning, and being joined by friends from Mexico City and beyond. This flourishing, strengthening artistic community has responded to the city’s accelerated evolution with a broad range of work, from painting to conceptually driven installations; from street-level digital video to ambitious photo-documentation, filmmaking and political work; from architectural proposals to product design associated with the "Nortec" musical movement. The work gathered in "Strange new world" embraces Tijuana as a paradigm of a new postmodern form of urbanization shaped by the pressures of economic globalization and cultural transnationalism since 1994. It struggles to make sense of new realities changing the ways in which people live in cities around the globe. Like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, it is part science fiction, part political commentary and part artistic revolution and cultural critique. Arranged around the concepts of the urban theorist Michael Smith, it features work by ERRE, Einar and Jamex de la Torre and Yvonne Venegas, among others.

Résumé:
This book investigates the state of panoptic art at a time when issues of security and civil liberties are on many people’s minds. Traditional imaging and tracking systems have given way to infinitely more powerful “dataveillance” technologies, as an evolving arsenal of surrogate eyes and ears in our society shifts its focus from military to domestic space. Taking as its point of departure an architectural drawing by Jeremy Bentham that became the model for an entire social regime, CTRL [SPACE] looks at the shifting relationships between design and power, imaging and oppression, from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. From the photographs taken with hidden cameras by Walker Evans and Paul Strand in the early twentieth century to the appropriation of military satellite technology by Marko Peljhan a hundred years later, the works of a wide range of artists have explored the dynamics of watching and being watched. The artists whose panoptical preoccupations are featured include, among others, Sophie Calle, Diller + Scofidio, Dan Graham, Pierre Huyghe, Michael Klier, Rem Koolhaas, Bruce Nauman, Yoko Ono, Thomas Ruff, Julia Scher, Andy Warhol, and Peter Weibel. This book, along with the exhibition it accompanies, is the first state-of-the-art survey of panopticism--in digital culture, architecture, television, video, cinema, painting, photography, conceptual art, installation work, robotics, and satellite imaging.

Résumé:
This is the first "Oxford companion" to deal with the subject of photography. It appears at a watershed in the medium's history, as digital imaging increasingly dominates the global photography scene at both amateur and professional levels. In addition to a wide range of technical information, the book encapsulates in concise and readily accessible form the mass of recent scholarship on photography as a social and artistic practice, organized both thematically and geographically. There are over 800 biographical entries, both on photographers and on other individuals who have significantly influenced photographic culture from the early 19th century to the present. The book's scope is worldwide. The international team of contributors is made up of leading authorities in their fields, and include: Heather Angel, Sylvie Aubenas, Quentin Bajac, Marta Braun, Clement Cheroux, Elizabeth Edwards, John Falconer, Colin Ford, Ron Graham, Sarah Greenough, Mark Haworth-Booth, Roger Hicks, Paul Hill, Jens Jaeger, Jan-Erik Lundstrom, Naomi Rosenblum, Rolf Sachsse, Martha Sandweiss, Graham Saxby, Joan Schwartz, Sara Stevenson, Roger Taylor, Regine Thiriez, John Ward, Liz Wells, and Mike Ware. The book is extensively illustrated and includes many pictures never before published. The majority of the 1600-plus entries include suggestions for further reading. But the work's usefulness is further enhanced by the inclusion of an extensive bibliography, a chronology of photographic history, a list of important websites, and an index of people.

Résumé:
The art of producing color in movies is a fascinating process with a long history. Many people don’t realize that, as early as the 1890s, much of silent cinema was in color. They also may not know that women were the main workforce behind the techniques that first produced these effects, a tradition that continued as the practice evolved. Breakthroughs in color technology have created ongoing opportunities for filmmakers to experiment with new forms of narrative and emotional storytelling. Spectacular, psychological and sensory, color has become an integral part of the cinematic experience. From the earliest hand-painted films to Technicolor and today’s digital cinema, Color in Motion takes readers on a journey through the evolution and significance of color in film. Presenting insightful analysis, engaging case studies and inspiring conversations with scholars and experts in the field, with topics ranging from animation to the intersections of color and race in cinema, it traces the historical development of color technologies and their impact onscreen. Incorporating vivid images of color films throughout history—Serpentine Dance, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Fantasia, The Red Shoes, Vertigo, West Side Story, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moonlight and more, as well as new multispectral scans of rare silent-era film prints—this essential volume celebrates color’s enduring influence on the medium of film.
