Résumé:
This book considers the material basis of building as a key impetus of both urbanization and the energetics of urban life. The otherwise externalized material geographies and thermodynamics of building’s material basis reveal much about the dynamics and efficacy of how we build. This book plots the material history and geography for one plot of land in Manhattan—the parcel of land under the Empire State Building—over the past two hundred years. Through rich illustrations, it tracks all the building material that have passed through this parcel or remain it in geographic and ecological dynamics: spatially (in terms of their geographic material footprints and industrial processes) and quantitatively (in terms of embodied energy, embodied carbon, and emergy flow). In successive chapters, the book articulates the empire and states that are inherent to building, but remain unconsidered—abstract and unknown—by architects.

Résumé:
For many, eco skyscrapers are synonymous with Ken Yeang. In more than three decades of practice, Ken Yeang has almost single-handedly pioneered and developed this building genre. This book presents Ken Yeang's work on the design of ecologically responsive skyscrapers, and includes his essay on applying green-design principles to the skyscraper typology, as well as a preface by Steve Featherstone, an introduction by David Scott (Chairman of The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) and a critique by Professor Ivor Richards. Ken Yeang makes it clear at the outset that the skyscraper building type is probably the most ecologically unfriendly of all building types, but states that until an economically viable alternative is identified, it is necessary to make them as humane and as sustainable as possible. Each project is presented together with data on its climatic location, the local vegetation, plot ratio, net and gross areas. The book is invaluable to those seeking to design green skyscraper.

Résumé:
This book is a mock film scenario written by the French novelist Jules Romains. It was first published in book form in 1920, and has never been translated into English. The satirical plot concerns a famous geographer whose academic career is about to be derailed by the revelation that he has invented a city in South America. Through a hilarious sequence of events, a suicidal young man finds a new mission in life by undertaking to found the fictional city, thereby redeeming the error and reputation of the absentminded professor. Jules Romains, 1885–1972, is the pseudonym of Louis Farigoule, a French novelist, dramatist, and poet. Romains was the founder of Unanimism, a social-literary theory that posited a collective spirit or personality within society. This concept pervades an early collection of his poems, La Vie unanime (1908), as well as his principal work, the twenty-seven-volume novel cycle, Men of Good Will (1932–46). Translated by Brian Evenson.

This little paperback by Michel Gondry was inspired by his latest film, Be Kind Rewind. The movie stars Jack Black and Mos Def as two friends who enact lo-fi versions of popular Hollywood films such as Ghostbusters or Robocop and offer them for rental. They call this reappropriative and participatory practice "sweding," which is to say, "putting you into the things you like." At New York's Deitch Projects, in February and March of 2008, Gondry emulated the heroic example of his characters, constructing a do-it-yourself film studio in which any visitor could assemble their own film from extant plot summaries and rent the results. His aim: "I intend to prove that people can enjoy their time without being part of the commercial system and serving it... Ultimately, I am hoping to create a network of creativity and communication that is guaranteed to be free and independent from any commercial institution."

Résumé:
Forming a comprehensive picture of the multiple processes, regulations, institutions, technologies, networks, and operations that we have come to understand as the distributed infrastructural arena in which we act, yield, and plot is a perennial challenge. Over the past decade, a growing number of artists, theorists, curators, and researchers have moved from ''institutional critique'' to ''infrastructural critique,'' or toward ''infrastructural speculation,'' in which they explore the potential of creative infrastructure-related visions and scenarios. In attempts to counter the impasse of ''the cancelled future,'' art has immersed itself in systemic critiques and propositional thinking, addressing major challenges, such as the rampant financialization of the economy and runaway climate change. From questions around space settlements to the possibility of repurposing blockchain infrastructures and financial instruments for redistributive purposes, and from the diagrammatic potential of infrastructural thinking in artistic practices to scenario planning and economic strategizing, this collection of new essays brings together critical analysis from a broad group of contributors engaged in the revisioning of our infrastructural futures. Their interrogations span local and global relationalities, historical and political legacies, as well as future-oriented infrastructural hypotheses.

Résumé:
The Making Of is the follow-up to international sensation Brecht Evens's Eisner-nominated debut, The Wrong Place. With lush watercolors and his characteristic wit, Evens details the fumbling, amateurish foibles of the participants of a small art festival in the Flemish countryside. Pieterjan is invited to a small town as an honored guest. From the moment he arrives, things start going wrong, and since no one seems ready to step in, Pieterjan takes over the show. He decides to build a giant garden gnome as a symbol of Flemish identity, but the construction process brings buried tensions to the surface as the other artists become jealous of Pieterjan's authority. In The Making Of, Evens delves deep into the petty tensions, small misunderstandings, and deadpan humor that pervade modern relationships. With a keen eye for the subtleties of body language, Even's The Making Of builds on the iconic visual style showcased in the Eisner award nominated The Wrong Place, which was published around the world. Sweeping watercolors jump off the page, surrealist scenery intermingles with crowds of people, and small suburban plot homes have never looked so lovely.

Résumé:
The work of Gabriel Orozco is an exemplary adventure of ideas and objects. Always generously implicating the spectator, Orozco draws on a large material repertoire to produce quiet shifts in commonplace scenarios. This book, published to coincide with Orozco's exhibition at the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, is the first substantial monograph on the artist, and testifies to the range of his investigations, from tiny adjustments in everyday locations (such as breath on a piano or reflections in a puddle) to more recent preoccupations with spherical forms in collage and paint. In an extensive interview with Briony Fer, the artist explains some of the conceptual premises of his art. Benjamin H.D. Buchloh situates Orozco s various sculptural practices within twentieth-century precedents and the climate of postwar consumerism and assesses them as manifestations of a shift in object-subject relations. And Yves-Alain Bois explores Orozco's recent "return" to painting, considering the structural logic of his canvases, in which Orozco deploys self-imposed rules to plot compositions (or "diagrams," as he describes them). With insightful texts and hundreds of illustrations, this big, bold, 360-page book is the definitive work to date on one of the most influential contemporary artists.
