Résumé:
Walker Evans (1903-1975) was one of the most important and influential artists of the twentieth century, producing a body of photographs that continues to shape our understanding of the modern era. He worked in every genre and format, in black & white and colour, but two passions were constant: literature and the printed page. While his photographic books are among the most influential in the medium's history, Evans's more ephemeral pages remain largely unknown. From small avant-garde publications to mainstream titles such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Architectural Forum, Life and Fortune he produced innovative and independent journalism, often setting his own assignments, editing, writing and designing his pages. Presenting many of his photo-essays in their entirety Walker Evans: the Magazine Work assembles the unwritten history of this work, allowing us to see how he protected his autonomy, earned a living and found audiences far beyond the museum and gallery.

An increasing group in contemporary society is rejecting agricultural production, as it exists today. Particularly prevalent, is the heated debate about conditions under which livestock is kept and slaughtered. Economic and ecological issues, animal and environmental protection, ethics and a (more) conscious meat consumption play an important role. The conflicts between these aspects must be negotiated in the public discourse, raising the question of which role architecture can play to improve this condition. The exhibition "Architecture for pigs" presents solutions for a modern agricultural pork production that meet the new demands of today’s critical consumer. In 2016, the organisers of an architectural student competition (KTBL and Stiftung LV Münster) began their research for new perspectives on agricultural architecture, livestock and societal engagement with agriculture. With this exhibition, Aedes Architecture Forum kicks off its 40th anniversary program. It is a continuation of the exhibition series on the role of architecture in the development of rural regions.

Résumé:
Rome is not only enriched by the works that have led it to be known as the "eternal city", or with those monuments that still preserve the stories of a strong people, such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum or Castel Sant'Angelo. It is not only the symbolic center of Christianity thanks to St. Peter's Basilica, or the central and figurative hub of the Italian Republic because of the Palazzo del Quirinale. The history, art, and culture of Rome tell the story of a process of restoration and innovation that sees the participation of some timeless places and the birth of other contemporary community services that join those already known to the public. During 1930s, the social and cultural revolution and call for functionality and practicality are represented by impressive modern public and residential works, as well as by major operations from architectural protagonists in the urban change of the capital. Works such as the university city of Sapienza and its institutes, or the EUR district tell the story of the formal transition between modernity and contemporaneity.

Résumé:
Apart from photography, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto has been working in sculpture, performing arts and architecture for more than 20 years. Since the early 2010s, he has been constructing the Enoura Observatory, and with his singular vision he has brought together ancient and contemporary Japanese traditions in one art and architectural complex. This book provides an account of this stunning multidisciplinary project. The Observatory, part of the artist's Odawara Art Foundation, is sited on a hilly area covered with citrus trees in Odawara, nestled against the outer rim of the Hakone Mountains and overlooking Sagami Bay. Odawara is home to groups of artisans with mastery of sophisticated techniques that have been handed down for centuries. Sugimoto has constructed the Enoura Observatory using these techniques, which are growing increasingly difficult to preserve. He envisions it as a forum for disseminating art and culture both within Japan and to the rest of the world. The stunning photographs in ''Enoura Observatory: Land of Distant Memories" reveal Sugimoto's poetic vision for this total work of art that is the culmination of his art practice.

Résumé:
Etymologically the term “intensity” refers to notions of measurement and quantity as well as strength and power depending on the context in which it is used. For this exhibition at Aedes Architecture Forum, the notion of “intensity” becomes the scale applied to architecture. “IntenCity” is articulated around a current and fundamental question: How can an increasing population and the resulting density and intensity be conducted by city planners and architects? As a way to answer this question, four key frames of intensity – history and city planning, architecture, landscape and flux – are used to highlight four projects: Espace Claude Monet in Rouen (2012), Pôle de commerces et de loisirs Confluence in Lyon (2012), Muse – Quartier de l’Amphithéâtre (2017) and Europea-Neo in Brussels (2025).

Résumé:
Rethinking strategies for rural development is a global pressing challenge. To stimulate the international discussion Aedes Architecture Forum Berlin is presenting a remarkable example from rural China. Dynamic urbanization processes shape large parts of the world and China in particular. The young population migrates to the cities, whereas many elderly people and children remain in the rural areas. While in the German hinterland railway lines are shut down and the digital infrastructure is more than inadequate, the rural exodus in China is countered with new high-speed train lines and even the most remote mountain villages are being connected by broadband coverage. But also small-scale architecture creates positive future prospects for cultural, social and economic development.

Résumé:
Novartis Campus at Basel will be characterized by far-reaching visions of urban space and architecture. The first new building on the Campus – "Forum 3" by Diener, Federle, Wiederin – was finished in 2005, followed by "Fabrikstrasse 6" of Peter Märkli. The third building – "Fabrikstrasse 4" by SANAA – was opened in autumn 2006. The two partners who lead SANAA, Ryue Nishizawa and Kazuyo Sejima, have designed a building that disregards all the rules of historical architecture: a rack, without a façade, with no hierarchy in its structure, and not responding in any way to the maxim of the pre-modern city. Essentially there are two materials: a light-coloured structure in in-situ concrete clad with glass. This publication presents works by Walter Niedermayr as well as numerous plans. With an introduction Ulrike by Jehle-Schulte Strathaus, texts by Aaron Betsky, Valerio Olgiati and Moritz Küng. Inventory by SANAA.

Résumé:
This monograph highlights the global works of Vinoly. For nearly half a century Rafael Vinoly has been driven by the belief that the responsibility of architecture is to elevate the public realm. While his early work in Argentina transformed the landscape of his native country, his first major international projects - the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York and the International Forum in Tokyo - established Vinoly as a global presence in architecture, whose buildings sustain a structural originality that transcends passing fads. This monograph features a chronological sampling of Vinoly's best work in the United States, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The large and small-scale projects encompass courthouses, private residences, athletic facilities, performing arts centres, museums and educational buildings. Illustrated with photographs, plans and drawings, and accented by Vinoly's personal reflection on his career, this volume brings together the achievements of one of today's most internationally acclaimed architects.
