Résumé:
The number one cause of global warming is architecture - the buildings. Buildings are responsible for 40% of the Co2 that is emitted into the atmosphere. The architects must take this responsibility and move from geopolitics towards biosphere politics. This publication is a real test of how this can be achieved. The context for the intervention is an existing historic building in Barcelona, the Centre of Arts Santa Monica; a building to explore the Third Industrial Revolution as the potential of a transformation towards an empathic architecture. Nature should let us show the path. Cloud 9 equipped the trees in front of Arts Santa Monica with sensors that capture data on temperature, humidity and light energy to inform the building. The intervention is an installation on the facade that produces energy from the environment, like the sun and wind. It is an additional skin which allows control of natural light and regulates solar radiation.

Résumé:
''Towards territorial transition'' presents new spatial strategies, concepts, and approaches for shaping large-scale and transnational developments in architecture and urban design towards decarbonization and ecological transition. The contributions investigate interactions between ecological and resource-related systems and landscapes. They also explore potential solutions to address and deal with the dramatic threats posed by climate change and the emerging social crisis. The book introduces six basic terms of territorial transition—territory, scale, transition, resource, platform, and uncertainty—and visualizes them with spatial strategies elaborated at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture Versailles and at Graz University of Technology. Moreover, it presents a selection of transnational projects of territorial transition, such as Luxembourg in Transition (Luxembourg / France), Grand Genève (Switzerland / France), and Top Noordrand (Belgium).

Résumé:
This book addresses the contemporary pavilion phenomenon and those often temporary and functionless architectural structures commissioned and exhibited by art institutions around the world (including the annual Serpentine Pavilion in London, Young Architects Program at MoMA PS1 in New York and the MPavilion in Melbourne). Despite its ubiquity and popular success, the contemporary pavilion has been inconsistently theorized and frequently disparaged. In this book, the authors reclaim the pavilion against those that would dismiss the phenomenon as symptomatic of the exhaustion of the critical potential of architecture's intersection with art. The pavilion phenomenon also occasions a timely interrogation of larger questions concerning the changing relations between culture and the economy- changes that are shifting the planes on which architecture and art meet.

Résumé:
Mass Studies was founded in 2003 by Cho, Minsuk in Seoul, Korea, as a critical investigation of architecture in the context of mass production, intensely over-populated urban conditions, and other emergent cultural niches that define contemporary society. Amid the many frictions defining spatial conditions in the 21st Century, namely past vs. future local vs. global, utopia vs. reality, and individual vs. collective. Mass Studies focuses on the operative complexity of these multiple conditions instead of striving for a singular, unified perspective. For each architectural project that exists across a wide range of scales, Mass Studies explores issues such as spatial systemps/matrixes, building materials/techniques, and typological divergences to foster a vision that allows the discovery of new socio/cultural potential.

Résumé:
Architecture shapes both human and more-than-human worlds. Historically, it has served (and still does) as an instrument of power—creating, restricting, and distributing both control and access. Yet architecture also carries the potential for care and inclusivity, offering shelter, and fostering belonging. Shifting the focus from the designers and creators of the built environment to its inhabitants, Building Diversity’s second publication offers a critical lens to explore for whom cities, buildings, spaces, and infrastructures are shaped for and with. The publication creates a space for diverse voices by bringing in different perspectives to highlight the complexities of the question: ... but, who are we building for? These multifaceted contributions spark curiosity and offer ideas and thoughts for further conversations and reflections. Building Diversity is a non-profit organisation based in Denmark, dedicated to foster diversity and inclusivity in the built environment. They believe that shaping architecture and design is a collective effort that thrives on diverse perspectives and inclusive collaborations. Building Diversity is powered by volunteers united by the vision of inclusive and equitable futures. With over 90 members from more than 40 nationalities, the community brings together a diverse group of perspectives.

Résumé:
"Unfinished atlas" features nineteen built and unrealized projects from Basel-based firm Manuel Herz Architects. Developed for highly diverse locations in ten countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia, they vary greatly in terms of building program, scale, character, and vision. The projects include housing, cultural and public buildings, exhibition and furniture designs, as well as architectural and urban research. Conceived as a critical retrospective, this book traces all stages of a project from initial sketches to completion, looking also at the afterlife of realized buildings. As the title "Unfinished atlas" suggests, architecture should never be considered entirely completed: there is always room and potential for later interventions by and with others. Five thematic chapters highlight the ever-changing challenges for a designer that arise from working in complex environments and different socioeconomic conditions.

Résumé:
Steven Holl celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of his landmark book "Anchoring with Compression," a collection of thirty-five major projects from the past decade. Holl applies concepts from neuroscience, literature, social science, and philosophy to develop the idea of compression: the condensation of material and social forces to create meaningful and sustainable architecture. A diverse roster of international works includes an expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston ; academic facilities for Columbia University, Princeton University, and the Glasgow School of Art; urban plans; a harbor gateway for Copenhagen; and an extension of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. All demonstrate Holl's poetic attention to light, space, and water; a subtle and tactile employment of material and color; and an awareness of architecture's potential to connect people through inspiring public spaces.

Résumé:
Architectural design is not limited by geographical, economic or political boundaries. However, the majority of the architecture brought to the world's attention tends to be concentrated in a few countries and located in the wealthier nations of Europe and North America. This "Architectural Design" title seeks to present recent architecture that is situated beyond these familiar boundaries and outside the customary centres of architectural debate. It focuses on architecture that positively benefits from being at the periphery. By presenting work from countries as diverse as Iceland, Guinea, Canada, Portugal, Chile, New Zealand and India, it highlights buildings designed to respond to climatic extremes, remote sites and a broad range of social settings. It also identifies architects who are exploring the potential of materials and limited resources. This work has not only been sought out for attention, but is documented and connected through interviews with selected architects and international contributors who are designing, researching and building at the edge.
