Résumé:
In Housing Problems, Susan Bernstein studies the actual houses of Goethe, Walpole, and Freud alongside textual articulations of the architectonic problems of design, containment, shelter, and fragmentation. The linking of "text" and "house" brings into focus the historical tradition that has established a symmetry between design and instance, interior and exterior, author and house—an often unexamined fantasy of historicism. Taking as its point of departure Goethe's efforts to establish such a synthesis through the concept of Bildung, the book traces the destabilization of this symmetry between house and self in Gothic literature and in narratives surrounding the founding of psychoanalysis. The interest in architecture holds open the tension between the generalizing figures of architectonics and the singular quality of housing features. These continue to mark theoretical thinking even as they dissolve and withdraw, as in Heidegger's "house of Being."

Résumé:
The workshop of Studio Mumbai, headed by Bijoy Jain, consists of open air spaces in a rustic setting surrounded by trees. There, a variety of skilled craftsmen, architects and engineers collaborate in the same space, engaging in, exercising and practicing architecture in a manner that aspires to transcend its own physicality. In this way, the process and act of communication has come to characterise the studio, its creative process and its output. An intimate look at the workings, outlook and inspiration of the practice is given, which includes the story of its background and setting, along with an interview with Jain and detailed profiles of significant projects in India: Tara House, Leti 360 Resort, House on Pali Hill and the Copper House, to name a few.

Résumé:
The sequence of projects presented demonstrates the vitality and coherence that the issue of housing retains in spite of the changes that took place in society towards the end of the 20th century. This can be observed when examining the basic programs applied by the architects during th project planning stage in which they try to preserve some ingredients which are essential for the health of the social fabric. The three classic areas, living-private-services, remain unchanged, with different manners of relating, with the expansion spaces, roofed or open to the sky, playing a very important part as they are of singular for family life.

"Trespassing: houses x artists" breaks through the conceptual boundaries that have historically divided art and architecture to describe new strategies of conceiving private space. In their individual collaborations with architects Alan Koch and Linda Taalman of OpenOffice, nine contemporary artists radically reinvent how domestic space is created and inhabited. The resulting works are open-ended, representing a new approach to visualizing form rather than a final product or conceptual destination. Includes work by: T. Kelly Mason, David Reed, Peter Noever, Renee Petropoulos, Julian Opie, Jessica Stockholder, Jim Isermann, Chris Burden, Barbara Bloom, Kevin Appel amongst others.

Their projects are open to the climate, transparent, and permeable, designed to work with rather than against climate. This book is the first scientific study of the thermal performance of winter gardens in residential constructions, showing their potential and effectiveness via selected projects of Lacaton: from their first house, Latapie, to a recently completed apartment and office tower in Geneva.

Résumé:
As building materials and technologies advance, architects are creating new kinds of urban environments. Among the innovations showcased in this book that are contributing to new architectural forms are parametric modeling enabled by computer-aided technology, environmentally friendly building skins, and HOPSCAs - a hybrid building type - that can house hotels, offices, parking, shopping, a convention center, and apartments under one roof. The dream buildings in this book reflect a changing architectural and cultural environment, and the processes that turn these concepts from vision to reality will open a new chapter in architectural history.
