This overview of his three-decade-long practice offers a full account of his numerous projects, from early pieces such as "Beauty" (1993), in which a spotlight shines on the mist produced by thousands of droplets, to the ambitious works produced from his Berlin studio, where he collaborates with architects, art historians, technicians, engineers, designers and cooks. With essays by Eliasson, Daniel Birnbaum and Timothy Morton, "Olafur Eliasson: Reality Machines" is a new definitive account of this artist's prolific oeuvre.

Résumé:
Beavers are the great comeback story—a keystone species that survived ice ages, major droughts, the fur trade, urbanization and near extinction. Their ability to create and maintain aquatic habitats has endeared them to conservationists, but puts the beavers at odds with urban and industrial expansion. Our history often celebrates our integration of environment into our identity, but our actions often reveal an exploitation of environment and celebration of its subjugation. Why the conflict with the beaver? It is one of the few species that refuses to play by our rules and continues to modify environments to meet its own needs and the betterment of so many other species, while at the same time showing humans that complete dominion over nature is not necessarily achievable.

Résumé:
Becoming Water takes the reader on a tour of Canada’s glaciers, describing the stories they tell and educating the reader about how glaciers came to be, how they work and what their future holds in our warming world. By visiting Canada’s high and low Arctic and the mountain West, the reader will learn how varied and complex our glaciers really are, how they are measured and how they figure into the national and global story of inevitable change. The reader will learn to think like a scientist, in particular how to look at climate-related data that contains cycles, trends and shifts, and then ponder what questions to ask in the face of our dramatically changing environment. This book encourages Canadians to explore upstream from ourselves, learning about our origins and how climate change and encroaching human settlement are drastically affecting our glaciers and therefore the natural and human landscapes that lie below—and are dependent upon—them.

Résumé:
How might nanotechnology—the manipulation of matter at the level of atoms and molecules—change buildings and cities in the future? The authors of Barba have imagined one possible future, shaped by a miraculous nanomaterial of the same name, which can be steered and altered in real time, changing its shape and size at will. With Barba, the authors speculate, the built environment can be adapted almost immediately to every desire and every need. This volume, the latest in The Why Factory’s Future Cities series, envisions the dramatic potential of nanomaterial to change cities and architecture in the not-so-distant future, further explored in a series of interactive experiments and installations. Part speculative architecture, part science fiction, Barba follows an inhabitant of this flexible future world for a day, daring the reader to imagine life in a fully adaptable environment.

Résumé:
Concerned with "development as art," this book is written by Roger Zogolovitch, founder of Solidspace. Zogolovitch studied at the Architectural Association in London between 1965 and 1971, and has seen the business of architecture since then from all sides: as architect, client and developer. He set up Solidspace as a vehicle to develop interstitial sites not otherwise recognised as suitable for inner city development. ''Shouldn’t we all be developers?'' is written in the first person, as a manifesto for an approach to contemporary development and architecture.

Résumé:
The Earth has entered a new epoch: the Anthropocene. What we are facing is not only an environmental crisis, but a geological revolution of human origin. In two centuries, our planet has tipped into a state unknown for millions of years. How did we get to this point? Refuting the convenient view of a “human species” that upset the Earth system, unaware of what it was doing, this book proposes the first critical history of the Anthropocene, shaking up many accepted ideas: about our supposedly recent “environmental awareness,” about previous challenges to industrialism, about the manufacture of ignorance and consumerism, about so-called energy transitions, as well as about the role of the military in environmental destruction. In a dialogue between science and history, The Shock of the Anthropocene dissects a new theoretical buzzword and explores paths for living and acting politically in this rapidly developing geological epoch.
