In the global marketplace where so much design is cookie-cutter and sameness prevails, it is timely to consider the work of Thor Hansen (1903-1974). Today, Thor Hansen is little known but from the mid-1950s to the end of the 1960s, the Danish émigré was a popular artist, designer and tireless promoter of the craft movement in Canada. Today, Thor Hansen is little known but from the mid-1950s to the end of the 1960s, the Danish émigré was a popular artist, designer and tireless promoter of the craft movement in Canada. He carried out his mission via corporate industry, independent of government support. Largely self-taught, he completed his most important work as art director for the British- American Oil Company. This book accompanies an exhibition at the Textile Museum of Canada.

Thirty years ago, alternative communities swept the american nation. Today, with sustainability, peak oil and retirement concerns, people of all ages are reviving and expanding notions of cooperative living as new communities form and thrive. The Modern Utopian is an exploration of the alternative communities that fascinated a nation and redefined progressive culture in the ‘60s and ‘70s, documented by those who knew it and lived it. This photo-illustrated compilation of articles visits the fabled Drop City, Morningstar Ranch, Timothy Leary at Millbrook, Detroit’s Translove Energies, the still-thriving Twin Oaks and Stephen Gaskin’s Farm, and dozens of other across the nation.

Résumé:
The company town, source of so much of Canada's wealth, was-and is-a place with nowhere to hide. First published in 1971, Rex Lucas's Minetown, Milltown, Railtown is a groundbreaking study of what it's like to live in such communities. Today, with the oil-sands boom and rising commodity prices affecting everything from the value of the Canadian dollar to the balance of power within Confederation, single-industry towns remain as central as ever to the country's economic and social life. Minetown is a compelling portrait not just of Canada's past, but of its present and future, too.

Résumé:
This publication examines the development of Epstein's work through the example of two very different series. "Recreation", exemplifies traditional American street photography in its sometimes ironized depiction of everyday circumstances, where "American Power" critiques the energy industry and its interventions in nature in much bolder gestures--cooling towers and oil refineries dominate the picture frame, riding roughshod over all rules of proportion and dwarfing anything in their vicinity. Here, in 80 color images selected from these series, Epstein's development is traced, from major protagonist of the American color photography boom to leading commentator on the state of the nation.

Résumé:
This edition of AV Monographs showcases OFFICE, a Brussels-based architectural firm renowned for its idiosyncratic architecture, in which realisations and theoretical projects stand side by side. The projects are direct, spatial, and firmly rooted in architectural theory. The firm reduces architecture to a limited set of basic geometric rules, within which life unfolds, in all its complexity. Amongst the 24 total projects featured, OFFICE’s warm minimalism takes the form of a ring-shaped home in Spain, a crematorium in Ostend dotted with geometrical shapes, and a state-of-the-art olive oil mill constructed on the estate of the first Medici villa outside Florence.

Résumé:
The violence wrought by climate change, toxic drift, deforestation, oil spills, and the environmental aftermath of war takes place gradually and often invisibly. Using the innovative concept of “slow violence” to describe these threats, Rob Nixon focuses on the inattention we have paid to the attritional lethality of many environmental crises, in contrast with the sensational, spectacle-driven messaging that impels public activism today. Slow violence, because it is so readily ignored by a hard-charging capitalism, exacerbates the vulnerability of ecosystems and of people who are poor, disempowered, and often involuntarily displaced, while fueling social conflicts that arise from desperation as life-sustaining conditions erode.

Résumé:
The American West with its breathtaking landscapes developed within just 200 years into a modern region with cities, parks, mobility, infrastructure and communication. This fundamental change, which took place in four phases – steam, steel, oil and information – was recorded in the middle of the twentieth century on linen postcards which were popular for their brilliant colours and attractive surface structure. Today the cards have become an independent and popular art form combining photography and painting with mass printing. The volume NEW WEST presents 500 of these valuable postcards from the Wagener-Erganian Collection, accompanied by knowledgeable texts about the development of the country and the subjects illustrated.

Résumé:
Ecological crisis has driven contemporary artists to engage with waste in its most non-biodegradable forms: plastics, e-waste, toxic waste, garbage hermetically sealed in landfills. In this provocative and original book, Amanda Boetzkes links the increasing visualization of waste in contemporary art to the rise of the global oil economy and the emergence of ecological thinking. Often, when art is analyzed in relation to the political, scientific, or ecological climate, it is considered merely illustrative. Boetzkes argues that art is constitutive of an ecological consciousness, not simply an extension of it. The visual culture of waste is central to the study of the ecological condition.
