Résumé:
The first book to fully explore cosmopolitan modern art by black South Africans under apartheid Black South African artists have typically had their work labeled “African art” or “township art,” qualifiers that, when contrasted with simply “modernist art,” have been used to marginalize their work both in South Africa and internationally. In Art and the End of Apartheid,John Peffer considers in depth the work of black South African artists in the decades leading up to the end of apartheid in 1994. Peffer examines painting and graphic art, photography, avant-garde and performance art, and popular and protest art through artist collectives (such as the Thupelo Art Project and the Medu Art Ensemble) and individuals such as Durant Sihlali and Santu Mofokeng. He shows how South African artists imagined what “postapartheid” could mean during the time of apartheid, even as they struggled with immediate issues of censorship, militancy, street violence and torture, and, more broadly, the problem of self-representation and the social role of art.

Résumé:
In a supportive article covering the 4th Berlin Biennial, critic Steven Henry Madoff took a moment to question what many have termed "Biennial Fever," writing, "Are [biennials] here to capture trends or to advance artists' voices in a larger social dialogue? Do they promote international understanding or local interests? Are they bully pulpits for curators turned ideologues, or are they simply there to tap the art market's stopwatch till the next survey of hot new things draws the attention of an ever expanding universe of collectors?" For the 2008 edition of this always-provocative international fair, Curators Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic brought together primarily newly commissioned work by 50 emerging and established international artists for a round-the-clock exhibition that included 63 nightly events. This expansive volume documents it all, and contains contributions by writers, critics and artists including Beatriz Colomina, Bettina Viesmann, Cameron Jamie, Gabriel Kuri, Babette Mangolte, Ahmet Ogut and Katerina Seda.

This book - the paperback edition of a milestone work that has been unavailable for several years - documents the short but influential life of Black Mountain College. Nearly 500 images, many in color and published for the first time in this book, show important works of art created by Black Mountain College faculty and students as well as snapshots of campus life. Four essays, all commissioned for the book, offer closer looks at the world of Black Mountain. Poet Robert Creeley recounts his first meeting with his mentor and friend Charles Olson. Composer Martin Brody offers a history of the musical world of the 1930s to 1950s, in which Black Mountain played a significant role.Faculty members included Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky, Willem de Kooning, Buckminster Fuller, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham. Among their students were Kenneth Noland, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly. Résumé:
The art world is no longer defined by the activity of traditional art centers such as New York, Berlin, Beijing, or London, but is instead shaped by many cities, small and large. These new artistic communities, each reflecting the history, culture, and conditions of its region, have established a vibrant network for contemporary art. Six Lines of Flight explores the hybrid nature of today's international artistic landscape by introducing readers to the art scenes in six featured cities--Beirut, Lebanon; Cali, Colombia; Cluj, Romania; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; San Francisco, USA; and Tangier, Morocco. In bringing together work by artists whose efforts have anchored each city's cultural scene, this book maps the pathways between them, illuminating the dynamic, global, interconnected spirit of twenty-first-century art. Essays by writers active in each region are accompanied by color images of representative artworks, along with brief texts on key local artists and organizations.
