Esherick is best known for high-profile public buildings, such as The Cannery at Fisherman's Wharf, the 1968 re-imagining of the old Del Monte cannery that is one of the earliest examples of adaptive re-use of industrial buildings, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He also produced a laudable stream of truly classic California homes, influenced less by fashion than by the demands of climate, social structure and suitable technology. A beautifully illustrated book from the distinguished UC Berkeley Landscape Design series.

Résumé:
As water becomes the next critical commodity in a rapidly warming world, the prestigious Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg Prize for industrial design articles was awarded in 2007 to German designer Lars Meyer, for a brilliantly simple proposal to purify drinking water in Bangladesh. After studying low-tech possibilities for water purification – and analyzing the many failures of systems provided by conventional aid schemes – Meyer came up with an inexpensive (and close to foolproof) process using the seeds of a fast-growing tropical tree and indigenous pottery-making. The designer’s respect for the culture of Bangladesh is the motivating force behind this potentially world-changing project. A small but fascinating book.

Résumé:
A great deal of Aalto-related research has been conducted over the years in different parts of the world. Some of these contributions have appeared in compendiums, seminar and congress publications and similar works. Many studies, however, have remained unpublished or known inly to a small circle of experts. 'Aalto Studies' is the Alvar Aalto Museum's new scholarly series. It seeks to compile existing research while also providing a channel of publication for new international Aalto research that is continuously growing in extent. This is the first number of 'Aalto studies' a collection of seven studies by Renja Suominen-Kokkonen PhD. Over the cours of several years, the author's research has particularly focused on the role of Aino Aalto alongside her maestro husband, thus expanding our understanding of Aalto and his works. Adjunct Professor Renja Suominen-Kokkonen PhD is at present acting professor of art history at the University of Helsinki.

Résumé:
The latest addition to the authoritative monograph series documenting each of Alvar Aalto's architectural projects focuses on the house Aalto and his second wife Elissa designed for the Parisian art dealer Louis Carré in the mid-1950s. This profusely illustrated volume describes the architecture of the building, the exceptional interiors and life in the house. It also includes a biographical sketch of Carré, who met Aalto at the opening of the pavilion Aalto had designed for the 1956 Venice Biennale. The friendship between Aalto, the radical experimenter, and Carré, the perfectionist patron of the arts, lasted the rest of their lives, and Maison LC became one of the most exceptional collaborations between architect and client ever built.
