Résumé:
In "Black elegies", Kimberly Juanita Brown examines the form of the elegy and its unique capacity to convey the elongated grief borne of sustained racial violence. Structured around the sensorial, the book moves through sight, sound, and touch to reveal what Okwui Enwezor calls the "national emergency of black grief." With her characteristic literary skill, Brown analyzes the work of major figures including Toni Morrison, Carrie Mae Weems, Audre Lorde, and Marvin Gaye, among others. Brown contemplates recognizable sites of mourning: forced migration and enslavement, bodily violations, imprisonment and death. And she examines sites that do not register immediately as archives of grief: the landscape of southern U.S. slave plantations, a spontaneous street party, a quilt constructed out of the clothing worn by a loved one, a dance performance to hold the memory of history, and an aeolian harp installed at an institute of European art, among others. In this, the book offers a framework of mourning while black, within the parameters of contemporary artistic production.

Résumé:
A walk along any London street takes you past a wealth of seemingly ordinary buildings: an Edwardian church, modernist postwar council housing, stuccoed Italianate terraces, a Bauhaus-inspired library. But these buildings are not just functional. They are evidence of London’s rich and diverse history and have shaped people’s experiences, identities, and relationships. In this engaging study, Paul L. Knox traces the history of London from the Georgian era to the present day through twenty-five surviving buildings. Knox explores where people lived and worked, from grand Regency squares to Victorian workshops, and highlights the impact of migration, gentrification, and inequality. We see famous buildings, like Harrods and Abbey Road Studios, and everyday places like Rochelle Street School and Thamesmead. Each historical period has introduced new buildings, and old ones have been repurposed. As Knox shows, it is the living history of these buildings that makes up the vibrant, but exceptionally unequal, city of today.

Résumé:
David Rusk argues that America must end the isolation of the central city from its suburbs in order to attack its urban problems. Rusk's analysis, extending back to 1950, covers 522 central cities in 320 metro areas of the United States. He finds that cities trapped within old boundaries have suffered severe racial segregation and the emergence of an urban underclass. But cities with annexation powers-- termed 'elastic' by Rusk-- have shared in areawide development. Rusk assesses the major trends of the 1990s, including the preceived rebound of central cities, the impact of Hispanic and Asian migration, and the emerging influence of faith-based movements. New recommendations take account of growing restrictions on cities' annexation powers, even in the south-western United States, and of new opportunities for federal shaping of home mortgage programs and urban planning processes. Rusk's conclusion stresses cities' growing experience with building political coalitions in pursuit of development and growth.

Résumé:
This book presents an essential selection from the portfolio of Emilio Duhart H. (1917-2006), a pivotal figure in Chilean architecture. Interweaving episodes from his life and work with the expansion of the modern movement as a global phenomenon, this chronicle places Duhart at the center of an ongoing dialogue between the universal precepts of modernism and the specificities of the Chilean cultural landscape. From his early contact with Walter Gropius in the 1940s to his collaboration with Le Corbusier in the 1950s, Duhart crafted an architectural narrative that not only adopted the ideas of modernism but transformed them, translating them into a language deeply tied to the local circumstances. Duhart’s personal and professional trajectory offers a fascinating perspective for understanding the global expansion of modern architecture, exploring themes central to its dissemination, such as migration, education, social class, housing, and urban challenges. In this light, his life and work are presented as a matrix rich in connections, capable of dialogue with other emblematic cases worldwide.

Résumé:
Using an innovative approach, this book interprets the unprecedented transformation of contemporary China's major cities. It highlights a diversity of trends in the areas of migration, criminal victimization, gated communities, and the status of women, suburbanization, and neighbourhood associations. Each chapter includes input from both an expert on urban life in China and an 'outside' expert from the fields of sociology, geography, economics, planning, political science, history, demography, architecture, or anthropology. John R. Logan is the founder of the Urban China Research Network, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Urban Affairs and City and Community. He was chosen Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University at Albany, SUNY, as well as Director of the Lewis Mumford Center for Comparative Urban and Regional Research. In April 2003 he was selected by American Demographics magazine as one of five social demographers whose work has most influenced his field in the last 25 years.

Résumé:
High-population centers of enormous size are springing up in China with dizzying speed. With them comes an increased demand for migrant workers in the construction sector, factories, and mines. In growth centers like the Pearl River Delta in Southern China, 40 million people have already set out from the underdeveloped provinces to earn their living there. The photographer Andreas Seibert accompanied the workers repeatedly in order to document their everyday lives and their journey to the high-population centers. Their stories are told in a collection of striking photographs that provide a close-up portrait to complement the current discussion of economic growth in China. Accompanying the photographs are texts by two Chinese authors, who researched the social and economic background of the phenomenon and provide a direct look. With its combination of text and images, this volume conveys a unique impression of the scale of this modern migration of peoples.

Résumé:
More than 90 per cent of the world's buildings, including some 800 million homes, constitute architecture of ordinary people. "Dwellings" is about the vast range of types of vernacular houses around the world. It documents the form of traditional buildings that are self-built by their owner-occupiers or built by members of a community, recording the means of construction and decoration of the house across a spectrum of different cultures. First published by Phaidon in 1987, Dwellings - in its new updated, revised and expanded format - assimilates new scholarship in the field, including the author's own research, and traces theoretical developments in the spheres of cultural geography, gender studies, sociology and anthropology. It is not only a reference work on domestic buildings, but also a useful survey for understanding how diverse communities cope with issues of climate, migration, mass development and, in turn, how this brings to life symbolic and cultural meaning in architecture.

Résumé:
"Birdpedia" is an illustrated compendium of bird facts and birding lore. Featuring nearly 200 entries—on topics ranging from plumage and migration to birds in art, literature, and folklore—this collection is brimming with wisdom and wit about all things avian. Christopher Leahy sheds light on 'hawk-watching,' 'twitching,' and other rituals from the sometimes mystifying world of birding that entail a good deal more than their names imply. He explains what kind of bird’s nests you can eat, why mocking birds mock, and many other curiosities that have induced otherwise sane people to peer into treetops using outrageously expensive optical equipment. Leahy shares illuminating insights about pioneering ornithologists such as John James Audubon and Florence Bailey, and describes unique bird behaviors such as anting, caching, duetting, and mobbing. He discusses avian fossils, the colloquial naming of birds, the science and history of ornithology, and more. The book’s convenient size makes it the perfect traveling companion to take along on your own avian adventures.

At a moment when the world is facing the world’s largest refugee and migration crisis since the Second World War, Incoming by Irish artist and Deutsche Börse Photography Prize winner Richard Mosse deals with the major humanitarian and political plight of our time, the displacement of millions due to war, persecution and climate change. With illuminating texts by Mosse and the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, the 576-page book combines film stills from the artist’s latest video work made in collaboration with electronic composer Ben Frost and cinematographer Trevor Tweeten – a haunting and searing multi-channel film installation, accompanied by a visceral soundtrack. Journeys made by refugees and migrants across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe are captured with a new weapons-grade surveillance technology that can detect the human body from 30.3km. Blind to skin colour, this camera technology registers only the contours of relative heat difference within a given scene, foregrounding the fragile human body’s struggle for survival in hostile environments.

Résumé:
How do we formulate alternative approaches to the world’s unresponsive or intractable dilemmas—from climate cataclysm to inequality to concentrations of authoritarian power? Easterling argues that the search for solutions is a mistake. Instead, she offers the perspective of medium design, one that considers not only separate objects, ideas and events but also the space between them. This background matrix with all its latent potentials is profoundly underexploited in a culture that is good at naming things but not so good at seeing how they connect and interact. In case studies dealing with everything from automation and migration to explosive urban growth and atmospheric changes, ''Medium design'' looks not to new technologies for innovation but rather to sophisticated relationships between emergent and incumbent technologies. It does not try to eliminate problems but rather put them together in productive combinations. And it offers forms of activism for modulating power and temperament in organisations of all kinds.
