Résumé:
''Arctic Practices: Design for a Changing World'' emerges at a critical juncture wherein the very stability of Arctic ecosystems hangs in a precarious balance induced, almost entirely, by humans. This volume assembles forty-six contributors—designers, educators, artists, photographers, filmmakers, some Indigenous, some residents, and some visitors to the Circumpolar North—to create a polyvocal assembly of Arctic practices. ''Arctic Practices'' stands as both documentation and provocation—an attempt to record current practices while simultaneously imagining new possibilities for Arctic design in an age of crisis. By bringing diverse voices and perspectives together, this publication hopes to contribute to an emerging discourse that recognizes the urgency of climate action and the necessity of anticolonial practice in Arctic contexts.

Résumé:
Tom Kundig is one of the most sought-after architects working today, known for his extraordinary houses that deeply engage with their surrounding environment. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Kundig’s international portfolio includes homes built into rocky sites, dynamic kinetic devices that open walls and roofs, and even moving architecture that travels via railroad track. Spanning nearly four decades of design, "Tom Kundig: Complete Houses" presents 462 residential projects together for the first time. This illustrated 600-page book is both a comprehensive overview of the architect’s career to date and an intimate, personal exploration of his creative practice. The book invites readers to explore 38 of Kundig’s remarkable residences in-depth, each brought to life through original interviews with Kundig, portfolios of his hand-drawn sketches, and photography.

Résumé:
Between 1966 and 1989, Inken (born 1942) and Hinrich Baller (1936–2025) realized 25 buildings in (then West) Berlin and a private residence in Switzerland. Although most of these structures were designed and built within the narrow financial and regulatory framework of social housing, all of them offer more than the standard: filigree; brightness; large balconies, terraces and gardens; good natural lighting thanks to glass interior walls; generous floor plans; and complex spatial relationships across several storeys. With their unconventional designs, the Ballers created situations that continue to serve as models for high-quality and affordable housing, as well as exciting urban spaces. This book is the revised new hardback edition of a comprehensive survey of Inken and Hinrich Baller’s work, which was first published in 2022. It offers a detailed photographic documentation of their buildings in their current state, reproductions of original plans and drawings, historic documents, and construction site and aerial photographs. The rich visual material is rounded out by essays and conversations with the architects and with residents of the buildings.

Résumé:
When in 1933 Hans Glas designed the villa for physicians Annie and Philipp Rezek on Wilbrandtgasse in Vienna, in the Austrian capital’s eighteenth district, it was one of the city’s most visionary buildings of its kind. The "Glas House," as the Rezek family called their home, is a quintessential example of modern architecture and the associated philosophy of living in 1930s Vienna. Viennese architect Hans Glas (1892–1969), a student of Adolf Loos, has today largely fallen into oblivion in Austria. "The Glas House" describes the Villa Rezek in detail, illustrated with numerous historical and new photographs by Stefan Oláh, plans, and historic documents.

Résumé:
Building on Jeanne Gang’s recent book of the same name, "The art of architectural grafting" explores her concept for bringing new life to existing buildings through strategic additions that expand on structures’ original capacity and minimise their carbon footprint. The horticultural practice of grafting connects two separate plants, one old and one new, so they can grow and flourish as one. This centuries-old technique is still employed today in the quest for more fruitful, tastier and more resilient plant varieties. Gang’s concept of architectural grafting applies the sensibility and principles of this approach to design at multiple scales. Rather than demolition and new construction, this approach focuses on the transformation and expansion of existing structures, thereby preserving both historic fabric and material resources.

Résumé:
The "evolving structures" exhibition brings together four revitalizations of buildings from different historical periods and of various typologies that have fallen out of use. In dealing with the restrictions imposed by the existing buildings - as well as with the requirements of monument preservation - the aim is to develop the existing substance from within. In this way, the buildings can regain their presence, which has faded over time, and radiate new vitality into their surroundings. From each of the four projects in the exhibition, ksg has formulated a thesis on sustainable transformation that describes the specific measure to be taken on the existing structure - the architectural key that enables a new activation of the existing building. All of the projects presented are currently undergoing conversion. This makes it possible to vividly convey the processes and the attitude of kister scheithauer gross.

Résumé:
The original bald and unconvincing narrative that triggered this book is that put about by Alison and Peter Smithson in their 1981 Heroic Period of Modern Architecture, limiting modernism to 1915–1929. This fiction is re-contextualized with studies of iconic Bauhaus bald heads – Schlemmer, Itten, etc., such Literal Baldness is the subject of Part 1. Part 2 of Phenomenal Baldness unwinds the Bauhaus narrative put about by Walter Gropius, one that has held water for 100 years. Spin doctor Gropius manipulated his Bauhaus successes into a cornerstone of post WW2 modernism. Cracks in this story are now emerging along with the fact that Gropius was in hindsight, not a very good architect. Attacks on the Bauhaus like those by Rudolph Schwartz or Tom Wolf as well as a comprehensive list of Gropius hand-holders, and those edited out of his narrative are here explored. To conclude Gropius is compared to his contemporary Bruno Taut, a far more interesting and talented architect. This book like Peter Wilson’s previous "Bedtime Stories for Architects" or "Some Reasons for Traveling to Italy" is written in his unique anecdotal style, savoring Shandyisms and the quirks of history.
