After the Second World War, talented young architects including several from Switzerland, turned to the task of promoting the ideals of Modernism. Their main interest lay in furthering the new design and construction methods which were then being made possible by industrial prefabrication and montage, eve considering and incorporating them at the design stage. The time has now come to review this chapter of recent architectural history. This publication focuses on four architects: Werner Frey (1912-1989), Franz Füeg (born 1921), Jacques Schader (born 1917) and Jacob Zweifel (born 1921). This group of Zurich architects created buildings which can be seen to embody the typical features of the architecture emerging from the late 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s : fastidious construction methods, a structural approach to designing brought about by increased use of prefabricated parts, an awareness of different social needs of the individual and the group which were subsequently reflected in the designs. Using a wealth of historical illustrations together with photographs by Doris Fanconis and 8 documentary films by Georg Radanowicz, visually interpreting the architecture from a contemporary viewpoint, this book is an invaluable documentation and analysis of those buildings which are of consequence for today's architecture.

En pleines Années folles, la création artistique est alors éclatante. Trait d'union entre l'ornementation excessive de l'Art nouveau et la rigueur formelle de l'architecture moderne - qui apparaît peu avant -, l'Art déco impose une esthétique élégante, faisant la part belle aux motifs géométriques, sans toutefois délaisser les courbes, et mettant en valeur la pureté des lignes et la sophistication des détails. L'Art déco accompagne le développement de la modernité et de nouveaux équipements tels que gares, cinémas, piscines, musées, etc. , où s'expriment les idées de vitesse, de voyage, de dépaysement et de divertissement ; mais il se manifeste également dans des programmes plus traditionnels comme les édifices administratifs ou religieux, par exemple. "Built futures" brings together Shahed Saleem’s written and visual research on the British Mosque, to narrate how mosques have emerged, evolved and become established in Britain since the late nineteenth century. Critical texts describe the ways in which mosques have been created through the grassroots, self-funded and self-built endeavours of migrant Muslim communities of diverse backgrounds, as they have settled in Britain. Through this journey of research, writing and designing, Saleem challenges the norms and assumptions of his own architectural training and wider design culture, leading him to ask: where is architectural meaning made, and with whom does authorship actually reside? Mostly created through the adaptation of existing buildings, from pubs to cinemas, high street banks to domestic terraces, the mosques which emerge from these sites are a combination of cultural histories and architectural styles, resulting in unexpected and original buildings that are powerful expressions of minority community agency and empowerment.

Mostly created through the adaptation of existing buildings, from pubs to cinemas, high street banks to domestic terraces, the mosques which emerge from these sites are a combination of cultural histories and architectural styles, resulting in unexpected and original buildings that are powerful expressions of minority community agency and empowerment.
