Résumé:
MASS MoCA presents a suite of new works made over the past 2½ years by artist Carrie Schneider. Reminiscent of abstract paintings, her photographs play with the camera’s imaginative potential and its relationship to the subconscious, while experimenting with the medium’s sculptural possibilities. Isolated during the pandemic, Schneider, like many of us, relied on her phone to find community and inspiration. Working with a room-sized camera she built herself – a sort of camera obscura affixed with a large-format Rodenstock lens – she exposes screen grabs of friends’ social media feeds, images from her private archive, and shots of historical artworks directly to photo paper. The enigmatic results provide glimpses into the artist’s interior life and present a picture of a deep desire for connection.

Résumé:
Siegfried Kracauer’s texts are a widely investigated field of sociology and media studies. It is less well known that Kracauer was a graduate architect, practised during World War I and was awarded his PhD after writing a thesis in 1915 in the field of architectural history. After the war, Kracauer published numerous critiques with a special focus on the architectural developments of the time. They document an interest in architectural phenomena ranging from a reflection on his own experiences to a general perspective on the subjectivity of the modern architect, as well as more universal social phenomena. In essence, this essay claims that the lack of ornamentation in modern architecture can be grasped as an ornamental concept of the new social order of capitalism.

Résumé:
For too long, representations of climate action in the mainstream media have been white-washed, green-washed and diluted to be made compatible with capitalism. In ''It’s Not That Radical'', Loach addresses head-on the issues at the root of the climate crisis. As Loach shows, we are living in an economic system which pursues profit above all else; harmful, oppressive systems that heavily contribute to the climate crisis, and environmental consequences that have been toned down to the masses. Tackling the climate crisis requires us to visit the roots of poverty, capitalist exploitation, police brutality, and legal injustice. Climate justice offers the real possibility of huge leaps towards racial equality and collective liberation as it aims to dismantle the very foundations of these issues.

Résumé:
This catalogue of methods draws on the wealth of cutting-edge critical and creative social research from the Goldsmiths Sociology Department to offer an engaged guide to doing research with a range of unexpected relations. The collection focuses on multiple assemblages of objects, media, materials, practices, relations, devices, and atmospheres, spanning methods and topics involving food to activism, knitting to ghosts, theater to documents, collaging to corridors. Through hands-on discussions of the practicalities, ethics, and politics of doing social research, the catalogue showcases a wide range of examples of what methods might mean and do. It builds a case for an understanding of contemporary social research as interdisciplinary, responsive, dynamic, vital, and urgent in studying and shaping social worlds.

Résumé:
The Avery Review, a digital journal about books, buildings, and other architectural media, makes its print debut with a thematic broadsheet edition about the city of Chicago. Coinciding with the inaugural Chicago Architectural Biennial, this issue addresses the historic imagination of the city (including figures of myth like Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, and even John Dillinger) and possibilities for the contemporary urban landscape (including discussions of placemaking, contemporary cultural monuments, and infrastructural parks). Selected pieces from the Avery Review's first year are republished alongside these commissioned essays on Chicago. Together these texts claim the critical essay as a space in which to test one's own intellectual commitments, to enter into and advance a conversation about the pasts and futures of urban architectural thought.

Résumé:
Studios are, at once, material environments and symbolic forms, sites of artistic creation and physical labor, and nodes in networks of resource circulation. They are architectural places that generate virtual spaces—worlds built to build worlds. On the outside, they have become icons of corporate identity, while on the inside, they have remained invisible in order to be seen. As such, they have actively faded into the background of critical discourse and into the margins of film and media history. Recovering their hidden role in the history of visual creation, ''In the studio'' demonstrates that when we foreground these worlds, we gain new insights into moving-image culture and the material, ecological, social, political, and economic dynamics that quietly mark the worlds on our screens.

Résumé:
Reyner Banham (1922–88) was a prolific, iconoclastic critic of modern architecture, cities, and mass culture in Britain and the United States, and his provocative writings are inescapable in these areas. His 1971 book on Los Angeles was groundbreaking in what it told Californians about their own metropolis, and architects about what cities might be if freed from tradition. Banham’s obsession with technology, and his talent for thinking the unthinkable, mean his work still resonates now, more than thirty years after his death. This book explores the full breadth of his career and his legacy, dealing not only with his major books, but a wide range of his journalism and media outputs, as well as the singular character of Banham himself.

We are constantly encouraged to lead the ideal life. Where once our identities were shaped by our communities, families and friends, today we write our own success stories on social media. We design our own identities to an unprecedented extent, constructing ourselves as we wish to be seen. Ways of ''upgrading'' oneself—dieting to achieve the perfect body, transforming your talents into a successful business, finding bliss by meeting a new love—may therefore be seen as new forms of creativity, or self-design. In ''Help your self!'' Dutch designer and director Mieke Gerritzen provides an inspirational guide for designing your ideal self, and shows you how to get started, while also scrutinizing the self-help industry with wit and intelligence.

Résumé:
This publication explores architecture’s entanglement with contemporary image culture. It looks closely at how changes produced through technologies of mediation alter disciplinary concepts and produce political effects. Through both historical and contemporary examples, it focuses on how conventions of representation are established, maintained, challenged, and transformed. Critical investigations are conjoined with inquiries into aesthetics and technology in the hope that the tensions between them can aid an exploration into how architectural images are produced, disseminated, and valued; how images alter assumptions regarding the appearances of architecture and the environment. For students and academics in architecture, design and media studies, architectural and art history, and related fields, this book shows how design is impacted and changed by shifts in image culture, representational conventions and technologies.

Résumé:
"Limited Language" is a web-platform, co-founded in 2005 by Colin Davies (University of Wolverhampton) and Monika Parrinder (Royal College of Art, London), for generating writing and discussion about the design process. Over the last four years the site has collected a series of essays and commentary dealing with the key issues which effect and shape visual communication today. This book examines the relationship between traditional printed formats (the book) and new digital ones (blogging). Hybrid media forms are already transforming design. How might they be used to rethink design writing? Each of its sub-sections comprises an article from the website, followed by a reflection/response to the topic by the responses raised on limitedlanguage.org, while rich visual imagery in colour illustrates each article/response.
