Résumé:
Today political protest often takes the form of spontaneous, noninstitutional, mass action. Mass protests during the Arab Spring showed that established systems of power - in that case, the reciprocal support among Arab dictators and Western democracies - can be interrupted, at least for a short moment in history. These new activist movements often use online media to spread their message. Mass demonstrations from Tahrir Square in Cairo to Taksim Square in Istanbul show the power of networked communication to fuel "performative democracy" - at the center of which stands the global citizen. Art is emerging as a public space in which the individual can claim the promises of constitutional and state democracy. Activism may be the first new art form of the twenty-first century.

Résumé:
This first monograph compiles 13 pieces by the Dutch-born artist Jan Hendrix related to his architecture and urban projects. Based in Mexico since 1978, Hendrix has worked across a variety of media from sculptures, to photographs to artist’s books. This collection of his monumentally scaled, intricate perforated metal screens shows his transition from two to three dimensions. Either as functional screens for lighting in large civic projects, exterior building treatments or stand-alone installations in the manner of Dan Graham, Hendrix’s art has transformed itself to architecture. The natural patterns and fractal geometries of his recent works sing in this generously illustrated, linen-bound volume, accompanied by essays on Hendrix’s relationship to historical movements like Jugendstil and individual project profiles on each included work.

Résumé:
Over the last 50 years, the America House in Berlin has been the focal point of cultural and political discussions and international controversies. Protected by barbed wire, it was attacked with eggs and Molotov cocktails; Robert Kennedy and Willy Brandt visited; millions of Berliners gained access to information in its library and at screenings of films; Lyonel Feininger and Robert Rauschenberg exhibited their works there. In addition, the building is an architectural gem. Built in 1956-57 by Bruno Grimmek, the delicate, open structure is based on the concept of the "idea of space"-a fluid space that is borne by a transparent exterior membrane. In fall 2014 the building will be the new home of C/O Berlin, the exhibition center for photography and visual media.

Résumé:
"Things as they are" presents the story of photojournalism over fifty years, from 1955 until today. It takes us from the golden era of the illustrated press—the heyday of Life magazine and Picture Post, and the moment of the Museum of Modern Art’s defining Family of Man exhibition—to the explosion of digital media in the twenty-first century. This history is told through the presentation of 125 photojournalism features shot and published throughout the world. These stories are presented in context—shown on the pages of newspapers and magazines, as the public originally experienced them. In this way, "Things as they are" reveals how the events of the world, the art of photographers, and the interests of publishers and the press converged on the printed page. It traces how photojournalism has developed over time alongside changing technology, media, fashions in photography—and a changing world. It includes photo-essays by photographers such as W. Eugene Smith, Sebastião Salgado, Mary Ellen Mark, and James Nachtwey, each accompanied by commentary. An international panel of one hundred photographers, editors, art directors, historians, and magazine collectors has made the final selections for the book. They have chosen stories that exemplify the highest quality of work published around the world during each period as well as stories that have played a key role in shaping the history of photojournalism itself, demonstrating important innovations in photography and in publishing. The book includes a preface by Michiel Munneke, director of World Press Photo; a foreword by Christian Caujolle, curator and founder of Agence Vu Press; an introduction by Mary Panzer that considers the past, present, and future of photojournalism; and a timeline of the period illustrated with iconic winners of the annual World Press Photo awards.
