Résumé:
"Bodyline" is a visual essay on the human body, approaches its subject in a spirit both playful and seriously experimental. Organised by themes in turn figurative and abstract, organic, and mechanical, immaterial, "Bodyline" contains not one predictable image of the body. Instead it uses diffracted views to conjure seven alternative visions of the flesh in the age of meta-mechanical reproduction, reconstructing the human physique by means of synthetic images, clothing patterns and technical blueprints. As such, "Bodyline" is a much about perception and delineation as it is about the body. The book is devided into three chapters loosely based on Robert Hughe's "Nothing if not critical". Here, through, the original categories are reversed : "Ancestors" explores the latest paradigms of virtual bodies, the computer-generated meshes of the gaming industry, which are also figurative; "Moderns", which constitutes the book's central exploration, features twentieth-century micro-narratives of pattern and garnment in which the body is already all but unrecognisable; and "Contemporaries" celebrates the reflections of self-portraiture through the projective network of Mongean geometry. The seven images of the body contained in this book - "Ectopic birth" (Nazila Maghzian), "How tall am I?" (Sharon Givony), "Vital points" (Eiichi Matsuda), "Inside out" (Kun-Min Kim), "Growth and decay" (Lawrence Ler), "Tiny deaths" (Carolin Hinne) and "10 years after" (Ema Bonifacio) - are accompagned by concise, literary texts.

"At the edge" is a rich and evocative call to action at a time when new ideas are urgently needed. Mandatory reading for policy analysts and decision makers in the public, private, and volunteer sectors, it will be equally useful to scholars, teachers, students, and others interested in creating sustainable societies. Throughout the world, biophysical evidence is mounting that human growth and activity patterns are slowly destroying the earth. This ecological deterioration is accompanied by similar social and economic decline, with potentially grave consequences for the continued existence of human societies. Yet, as Ann Dale compassionately argues, it is not too late to take action. Hope lies in sustainable development - the fundamental human imperative of the 21st century. Sustainable development, in Dale's view, is the process of reconciling three imperatives: the ecological, the social, and the economic. Equitable access to resources in all three spheres is fundamental to the global realization of sustainable development. This will not be realized without strong leadership by governments at all levels. Ultimately needed is a new framework for governance based on human responsibility and a recognition of the interconnectedness of human and natural systems.

Résumé:
What is a sustainable community? The pressing need to answer this simple question is what prompted John Pierce and Ann Dale to gather the essays in this volume. Communities, Development, and Sustainability across Canada is a timely synthesis of work on how Canadian communities can achieve sustainable development. It bridges the gap between theory and praxis and brings together academics, policy makers, and community activists, all of whom have argued for increased local participation in sustainable community development. Communities have become the weak link in efforts to refashion relations between the environment and the economy. The goal of this book is not simply to describe problems but also to suggest answers, not simply to offer theory but also to promote action, so that Canadian communities can better achieve sustain-able development. The twelve essays are organized into four sections: Vision, Connections, Action, and Assessing Progress. The first and last sections discuss local sustainable development within the context of increasing globalization. The second section approaches sustainable development from the perspective of social evolution and urban systems. The third section, the heart of the book, is comprised of three community case studies, an assessment of the Pacific salmon fishery, and four general discussions of sustainable development. The conclusion reiterates the need to make communities stronger links in sustainable development. The message of "Communities, development, and sustainability across Canada" is clear: it is time for communities themselves to act if they are to achieve sustainable development. This book will prove to be a valuable guide to taking the first steps.

Arthur Brown Jr. (1874-1957) is celebrated by his peers for such masterpieces as the City Hall, War Memorial Opera House, Temple Emanu-El, and Coit Tower in San Francisco; the Pasadena City Hall; and the Labor-ICC block of the Federal Triangle in Washington, DC. Brown epitomized the idea that architecture not only houses society’s daily rituals and defining events but also can itself shape the sociopolitical landscape of America. "Arthur Brown Jr.: progressive classicist" unifies the varied strands of the architect’s life, from the architectural forms and methods of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris to the reforming spirit and self-reliant confidence of San Francisco after the earthquake and fire of 1906 to the challenging economics and changing aesthetics of machine-age America. It details the development of Brown’s major works and many other civic, commercial, religious, academic, and residential buildings. It chronicles his unflagging commitment to the classical tradition, which he employed in contemporary, forward-looking institutional buildings that emphasized continuity with the past while meeting the needs of the future. To Brown, the classical tradition was not a sacrosanct, unchanging body of knowledge; it was an expanding and evolving set of ideas about architectural design that permitted, and even demanded, change as new conditions and technologies were developed.

For many, the idea of prefab may bring to mind trailers and other less desirable images of housing.Instead, the new prefab is becoming the inevitable next step to "cool" housing as home buyers look for distinctive yet reasonably priced first and second homes. One in six new houses today is a prefab and 400,000 units are now produced in the U.S. each year. More than 50% of all homes are constructed in whole or in part by using building systems - modular, panelized components produced in quality controlled environments. This exploration of the best prefabricated houses on the market today, from all over the world, along with a resource directory on how you can purchase them, is an invaluable reference for those interested in this alternative.

Shopping was as important in the Renaissance as it is today. This fascinating and original book breaks new ground in the area of Renaissance material culture, focusing on the marketplace and such related topics as middle-class to courtly consumption, the provision of foodstuffs, and the acquisition of antiquities and holy relics. The book investigates how men and women of different social classes went to the streets, squares, and shops to buy goods they needed and wanted on a daily—or a once-in-a-lifetime—basis, during the Renaissance period.
