Résumé:
Stuart Franklin took one of the most powerful photographs of the twentieth century - the 'tank man' in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, 1989. From his insightful position as a photographer, Franklin explores why we are driven to visually document our experiences and the world around us. He focuses on photography but traces this universal need through art, literature and science. Looking at photojournalism, war photography and work recording our culture, Franklin identifies some of its driving impulses: curiosity, outrage, reform and ritual; the search for evidence, for beauty, for therapy; and the immortalization of memory. As our understanding of 'documentary' continues to expand, Franklin considers photographic staging - where, perhaps, the future of the genre may lie: in search of truth over fact.

Résumé:
Preservation is Overtaking Us brings together two lectures given by Rem Koolhaas at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, along with a response (framed as a supplement to the original lectures) by Jorge Otero-Pailos. In the first essay Koohaas describes alternative strategies for preserving Beijing, China. The second talk marks the inaugural Paul Spencer Byard lecture, named in celebration of the longtime professor of Historic Preservation at GSAPP. These two lectures trace key moments of Koolhaas’ thinking on preservation, including his practice’s entry into China and the commission to redevelop the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. In a format well known to Koolhaas’ readers, Otero-Pailos reworks the lectures into a retroactive manifesto, using it to interrogate OMA’s work from within the discipline of preservation. This is the first book in the new GSAPP Transcripts series.

Résumé:
In 1946 Ove Arup, a leading engineer of the twentieth century, founded a firm of consulting engineers that brought to fruition such iconic structures as the Sydney Opera House, the Olympic Village in Beijing, London’s Millennium Bridge, the Beaubourg Centre in Paris, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, and Kansai Airport in Japan among many others. Devoted to a “commonsense” reform of engineering and architectural practice, Arup (1895-1988) pioneered the way for modern architects and engineers to collaborate successfully and responsibly on large projects. Peter Jones, the first researcher to have full access to the vast private Arup archives, tells the story of Ove Arup’s extraordinary life, his social, aesthetic, and environmental concerns, and his practical contributions during a period of political and technological upheaval. Jones also offers a revelatory new account of the Sydney Opera House and the character of those involved in its complex construction.

Résumé:
Since constructing his own studio in 1999, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has designed or collaborated with other architects on a wide range of architectural projects. These collaborations were the subject of Ai Weiwei: Art/Architecture, a 2011 exhibition at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria, which this catalogue accompanies. A highlight of this overview is the widely celebrated “Bird’s Nest” Beijing National Stadium, a collaboration between Ai and the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron that was constructed for the 2008 Olympic Games. Another feature is a new work based on a project titled “Ordos 10” for which Ai invited 100 young architectural firms worldwide to design single-family houses for Ordos City in Inner Mongolia. An essay in the catalogue examines the role of architecture in relation to Ai’s political activities, an issue of particular relevance since his arrest and conditional release in 2011.

Résumé:
Architects face many challenges when designing a modern urban house. Environmental performance, aesthetics, technical logistics, material concerns, site constraints—these are all considerations that have the potential to limit what architects can achieve, but that also can inspire creative solutions. In addition, each city’s history, obstacles, and opportunities influence local design approaches. Jonathan Bell and Ellie Stathaki have selected urban structures from around the world to serve as both exemplary solutions and standout works of art—in Beijing and Mexico City, Athens and Tokyo, Los Angeles and Cape Town. By examining buildings on six continents, from both emerging architects and established studios such as Zaha Hadid Architects, MVRDV, and Johnston Marklee, this stunning volume explores the many ways in which architecture can enhance the experience of dwelling in a modern city by responding to traditional styles and challenges of site and providing a broader understanding of place.

Résumé:
The art world is no longer defined by the activity of traditional art centers such as New York, Berlin, Beijing, or London, but is instead shaped by many cities, small and large. These new artistic communities, each reflecting the history, culture, and conditions of its region, have established a vibrant network for contemporary art. Six Lines of Flight explores the hybrid nature of today's international artistic landscape by introducing readers to the art scenes in six featured cities--Beirut, Lebanon; Cali, Colombia; Cluj, Romania; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; San Francisco, USA; and Tangier, Morocco. In bringing together work by artists whose efforts have anchored each city's cultural scene, this book maps the pathways between them, illuminating the dynamic, global, interconnected spirit of twenty-first-century art. Essays by writers active in each region are accompanied by color images of representative artworks, along with brief texts on key local artists and organizations.

Résumé:
In 2008, Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei joined forces to design the celebrated Beijing National Stadium for the Olympic Games. In 2012, the team came together again for the Serpentine Gallery’s acclaimed annual commission, as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. Their pavilion takes visitors beneath the Serpentine’s lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous pavilions. Supporting the structure from below, eleven columns symbolize past pavilions, and a twelfth represents the current one. The pavilion’s interior is clad in cork, to evoke the excavated earth, and is built as a network of pathways and trenches. Herzog & de Meuron and Weiwei’s archaeological approach creates a space that invites visitors to look beneath the surface of the park as well as back in time to the inspiration of earlier structures. Foreword and interview by Julia Peyton-Jones, Hans Ulrich Obrist

Résumé:
"Dutch architects in booming China" presents more than 80 projects (also on show in the exhibition of the same name) which are lavishly illustrated and described in detail. Together, they present a fascinating and unique picture of Dutch design energy for China. Among them are: the State Television in Beijing (Rem Koolhaas, OMA), Guang Dong Museum in Guangzhou (UN Studio), Sleeping Dragon in Hong Kong (Atelier Dutch), Xintian International Kindergarten (NEXT Architects) and Guo Tai Bridge in Tianjin (Verburg Hoogendijk Architecten). The projects are accompanied by four essays, written by China experts. The regional planner Ton Kreukels describes the history of urban development in China. The Shanghai-based architect Kok-Meng Tan discusses Chinese architecture and urbanism at the present moment and takes a look behind the scenes of Chinese architectural practice. Marlies Buurman records the experiences of the more than thirty Dutch offices working in China, and Maarten Kloos gives an introduction to the projects by Dutch architects who are working worldwide.
