''Otherhow'' interrogates modes of access and analyzes how issues of accessibility and their resolution provide a benefit to everyone, not just the disabled. Chapters devoted to art, access and advocacy underpin the interconnected nature of these issues. Letters of complaint, faxes and emails, unpublished op-eds, exhibition proposals, statements on equality and access: each provides a glimpse into how Grigely’s work has been shaped by—or constructed from—the "tangled process" of opening access. It dates to a little-known period early in his career when he immersed himself in the Jewish cultural renaissance that flourished in Russia from roughly 1912 to the early 1920s. Signed with his Hebrew given name, this volume—with its wraparound cover, colorful lithographic montages, and stylized use of Yiddish and Aramaic words—celebrates Lissitzky's interest in Jewish folk traditions while looking forward to the dynamic graphic and typographic designs for which he is best remembered. At the same time, architecture itself is undergoing an identity crisis as it confronts fundamental issues: the effect of digital technology on design, the pervasive impact of global capitalism, and whether to embrace or resist popular media and taste. The New Architectural Pragmatism collects the most provocative, penetrating, and influential attempts by leading theorists and practitioners in the field to define what architectural practice should be at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Written in the aftermath of modernism’s utopian impulse and postmodernism’s detached playfulness, the essays gathered here express and critique a new spirit of cultural and political engagement with contemporary society. László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) was one of the most ardent seekers of the ‘New Vision’ among the early twentieth century avant-garde artists. His ongoing preoccupation with the phenomenon of light defined all periods of his artistic creativity, and his strength lay in his effortless skill translating light and spatial dimensions from one medium to another. In the early 1930s the first color processes became widely available. After he had mastered the different fields of black/white photography, it was only to be expected that Moholy would focus his creative energy on the next hot issue among photographers. Color photography proved to be one of Moholy’s most important media of artistic production, but until now, with a few exceptions, his work in the field of color photography is unknown. This book presents 100 works — advertisements, portraits, urban views, New Bauhaus studies, and abstract compositions — from the early days of Moholy’s experimentation with color in 1934 until his death in 1946. A foreword by Hattula Moholy-Nagy, an introductory essay and extended captions by Jeannine Fiedler, a chronology and bibliography will present the history of color photography and the significance of these works in Moholy’s own oeuvre.

The scene is the world’s largest self-supporting hall in a small village close to Berlin. At the end of the 1990s, the firm CargoLifter AG attracted international attention with its vision of con- structing the world’s largest heavy-lift airship. By building an architecturally outstanding hangar, the company demonstrated pioneering spirit and gave rise to huge media response. After the enterprise failed, the hall was sold to a consortium of Asian firms that then presented the next superlative. The former hangar was converted into the Tropical Islands Dome, Europe’s largest indoor tropical paradise. The authors Gerlinde Schuller (Information Design Studio, Amsterdam) and Claudia Weber (artist, Berlin) compare these two visions on their paths to implementation, while simultaneously putting them in the context of current international events. This book explores the varied legacies, influences, and futures of the Bauhaus. Many of the animating issues of the Bauhaus—its integration of research, teaching, and practice; its experimentation with materials; its democratization of design; its open-minded, heterogeneous approach to ideas, theories, methods, and styles—remain relevant. Many of the animating issues of the Bauhaus—its integration of research, teaching, and practice; its experimentation with materials; its democratization of design; its open-minded, heterogeneous approach to ideas, theories, methods, and styles—remain relevant. The contributors to "Bauhaus futures" address these but go further, considering issues that design has largely ignored for the last hundred years: gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and disability. Their contributions take the form of essays, photo-essays, interviews, manifestos, diagrams, and even a play. They discuss, among other things, the Bauhaus curriculum and its contemporary offshoots; Bauhaus legacies at the MIT Media Lab, Black Mountain College, and elsewhere; the conflict between the Bauhaus ideal of humanist universalism and current approaches to design concerned with race and justice; designed objects, from the iconic to the precarious; textile and weaving work by women in the Bauhaus and the present day; and design and technology.

This book addresses Lullism as a remarkable and distinctive method of thinking and experimenting. The origins and impact of Ramon Llull’s oeuvre as a modern thinker are presented, and their interdisciplinary and intercultural implications, which continue to this day, are explored. Ars combinatoria, generative and permutative generation of texts, the epistemic and poetic power of algorithmic systems, plus the principle of unconditional dialogue between cultural groups and their individual members, are the most important coordinates of this combinatorial–dialogical media and communication theory, which appeared very early in the history of science, technology, and art.
