Given an ideal situation to work with, the Zurich architects Marcel Meili and Markus Peter designed and built a new training and meeting center for Swiss Re in Rüschlikon. Backed by an ambitious client and a substantial budget, they developed an expansive park complex overlooking Lake Zurich and the Bodmer mansion, a protected historical monument, into a setting in which architecture and art, landscape and interior space, old and new combine to form a complex whole. The result is not a manifesto of a particular style but the equally perfect and subtle interpretation of a real place and the programmatic vision it inspires. The Art Commission of Swiss Re chose a "strategy of systematic artistic interventions in existing space". The design of all furniture and interiors was entrusted to the hands of renowned artists and architects. Adolf Krischanitz and Hermann Czech designed the furniture and the "Red Bar" in the Gardener's Lodge. Gilbert Bretterbauer supervised the design and selection of textiles. Artist Günther Förg handled the color design for all of the interiors in the old mansion. The old grounds had been preserved almost entirely in their original condition. The existing stands of trees served as a framework for the detailed design of the park complex by landscape architects Kienast Vogt and Partner. With photographs by Margherita Spiluttini

Gracing the cover jacket of Rachel Harrison's highly anticipated second monograph is an informal monument to the man who holds the Americas' namesake. The only hint to this memorial for the 15th century Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, is an apple resting on an outcropping of neon-green cement; of course the fact that the apple is not only artificial but has a bite taken out of it suggests otherwise to the discovery of these "Edenic" continents. This slight yet important fact raises the basic concept of if i did it: the active disavowal of art's political function as a museological testament to the "progress" of social history. By tossing off this monumental propensity, Harrison builds "antimonuments;" not so much sculptures but lumpen aggregates of pop psychology. In addition to Vespucci, throughout the book, one finds that celebrities Johnny Depp and Tiger Woods are included in a pantheon with John Locke and 18th century Corsican revolutionary Pasquale Paoli, meanwhile Al Gore checks the temperature, Claude Levi-Strauss checks the door with a taxidermied hen and rooster and a bi-curious Alexander the Great is the master of ceremonies. The title, taken from O.J. Simpson's infamous "hypothetical" account of his murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Donald Goldman, groups this role call of high- and low- brow idols into a nonhierarchical tableau where cultural and political value are allotted only where one sees fit.

Originally published in 1983, ''Writings 1973-1983 on Works 1969-1979,'' by Los Angeles artist Michael Asher (1943-2012) presents select documentation of 33 works through writings, photographs, architectural floor plans, exhibition announcements and other ephemera. For most of his career, Asher did not create traditional art objects; instead, he altered the existing institutional apparatus through which art is presented, creating work that intervened in the architectural, social or economic systems that undergird how art is produced and experienced. For example, in 1974, he removed the partition wall dividing the office and gallery space of the Claire S. Copley Gallery in Los Angeles, revealing the day-to-day activities of the gallery to the public. In another work from 1979, Asher had a bronze replica of a late 18th-century sculpture of George Washington moved from the exterior of the Art Institute of Chicago to a museum gallery that housed 18th-century art, reintroducing the statue to its original period context and shifting its function from public monument to indoor sculpture. Due to its site- and time-specific nature, Asher’s work generally ceased to exist after an exhibition, which makes this highly sought-after book an invaluable resource. As the artist states in the introduction: ''This book as a finished product will have a material permanence that contradicts the actual impermanence of the art-work, yet paradoxically functions as a testimony to that impermanence of my production.''
