Résumé:
"The signature of all things" is Giorgio Agamben’s sustained reflection on method. To reflect on method implies for Agamben an archeological vigilance: a persistent form of thinking whose path is to expose, examine, and elaborate that which remains obscure, unthematized, even unsaid, in an author’s thought. To be archeologically vigilant, then, is to return to, even invent, a method attuned to a "world supported by a thick plot of resemblances and sympathies, analogies and correspondences." The range of authors and of topics Agamben collects in this slim but dense volume exemplifies this search to create a science of signatures that exceeds either a semiology or hermeneutics vainly attempting to determine the pure and unmarked signs that signify univocally, neutrally, and eternally.

Most amazing perhaps is Val Verde, the house built in 1915 on a breathtaking seventeen-and-one-half-acre coastal plot by American architect Bertram Goodhue. Besides its status as the most preserved of the great early-twentieth-century Southern California estate properties, Val Verde also bears the distinction of being the earliest American free-standing single-family house in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Austin Val Verde: A Montecito Masterpiece is the first book to reveal the full extent and richness of Val Verde's architecture, interiors, and gardens. The book includes never-before-published color photographs of the house and its gardens by the late Berge Aran

Résumé:
J.G. Ballard's 1975 novel "High Rise" contains all of the qualities we have come to expect from this author: alarming psychological insights, a study of the profoundly disturbing connections between technology and the human condition, and an intriguing plot masterfully executed. Ballard, who wrote the tremendously troubling "Crash," really knows how to dig deep into our troubling times in order to expose our tentative grasp of modernity. Some compare this book to William Golding's "Lord of the Flies," and there are definite characteristics the two novels share. I would argue, however, that "High Rise" is more eloquent and more relevant than Golding's book. Unfortunately, this Ballard novel is out of print. Try and locate a copy at your local library because the payoff is well worth the effort.

Between 1945 and 1967, Le Corbusier (1887–1965) planned and built five “Unités d’habitation” in Marseille, Rezé, Berlin, Briey-en-Forêt and Firminy. Due to an acute shortage of housing after the war, he developed a new type of building—multifunctional blocks of flats that combined a large number of apartments on a small plot. These buildings included a roof landscape, as well as such urban structures as schools, cinemas, pharmacies and grocery stores. Le Corbusier’s revolutionary idea of a vertical city offered novel solutions to urban planning issues and social, aesthetic and structural challenges. The five Unités, now in various states of repair, have been photographed by photographer Arthur Zalewski (born 1971). This catalog collects Zalewski’s photographs alongside texts by curator Peter Ottmann, Arthur Zalewski and Anne König.

Résumé:
BIG or Bjarke Ingels Group is one of the best and most talented Danish architectural firms in recent years. Originally, Bjarke Ingels founded the architectural firm PLOT together with Julien de Smedt, and the duo created high-profile projects in a number of locations including Ørestad outside of Copenhagen. In the book, Boris Brorman Jensen and Jens Thomas Arnfred comment on the firm’s latest proposals, first prizes in international competitions and projects under construction, including the unique ”8 House” or BIG House with both residential and commercial units, which is currently being completed in Ørestad. The book is illustrated with drawings and construction site photographs. The main emphasis of the book is on the studio lab where the ideas are developed, the models are constructed, and geometrically sophisticated drawings see the light of the day.

Résumé:
This book considers the material basis of building as a key impetus of both urbanization and the energetics of urban life. The otherwise externalized material geographies and thermodynamics of building’s material basis reveal much about the dynamics and efficacy of how we build. This book plots the material history and geography for one plot of land in Manhattan—the parcel of land under the Empire State Building—over the past two hundred years. Through rich illustrations, it tracks all the building material that have passed through this parcel or remain it in geographic and ecological dynamics: spatially (in terms of their geographic material footprints and industrial processes) and quantitatively (in terms of embodied energy, embodied carbon, and emergy flow). In successive chapters, the book articulates the empire and states that are inherent to building, but remain unconsidered—abstract and unknown—by architects.

Résumé:
This little paperback by Michel Gondry was inspired by his latest film, Be Kind Rewind. The movie stars Jack Black and Mos Def as two friends who enact lo-fi versions of popular Hollywood films such as Ghostbusters or Robocop and offer them for rental. They call this reappropriative and participatory practice "sweding," which is to say, "putting you into the things you like." At New York's Deitch Projects, in February and March of 2008, Gondry emulated the heroic example of his characters, constructing a do-it-yourself film studio in which any visitor could assemble their own film from extant plot summaries and rent the results. His aim: "I intend to prove that people can enjoy their time without being part of the commercial system and serving it... Ultimately, I am hoping to create a network of creativity and communication that is guaranteed to be free and independent from any commercial institution."
