Résumé:
The main thrust of this book is the philosophy and methodology of Van Sambeek & Van Veen Architecten. The offices projects are presented according to seven themes, which all relate to organizational forms that are important to the work of Erna van Sambeek and René van Veen: neutrality, exclusivity, family, seriality, position, interiority and time. For each design, the architects ask how the essence of the task can be reduced to a combination of two or more of these themes. Each project therefore appears at least twice in the book, but with text and image tailored specifically to the theme of a particular chapter. The design philosophy of Van Sambeek & Van Veen architecten demonstrates the richness that architecture can gain from a consistent concentration on the essentials and a clear separation of primary and secondary aspects, and the broader implications of this. Typography design by Rudo Hartman.

HK Lab 2 picks up where HK Lab left off, and extends it. It brings together artists projects and a number of theoretical and critical viewpoints on Hong Kong interior spaces. The changing nature of urban experience and inhabitation calls for new critical paradigms and interdisciplinary approaches. It is perhaps time to move on and explore the concept of the city and its urban practices, not from visual, panoptic constructions, but from opaque, poetic, lived and embodied experiences of the city.

Résumé:
This volume is one of three books in The Michigan Debates on Urbanism, a series that also features Everyday Urbanism and New Urbanism. Each book represents a distinct, inevitable, but still-emerging paradigm in contemporary urbanism, and is an elaboration of public debates held at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning during the winter of 2004. Peter Eisenman, acclaimed New York architect, author and theorist, presents several of his recent projects, including his team’s entry for the controversial Ground Zero competition at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan. This project and the larger body of his work are termed Post Urbanist by the series editor Douglas Kelbaugh. Post Urbanism refers to a critical, post-structuralist project, expressing avant-garde sensibilities and the techno-flow of a globalizing society. Barbara Littenberg and partner Steven Peterson, also well-known design practitioners from New York, present their entry into the Ground Zero competition, as well as other urban design projects that are characterized as ReUrbanism. Each side takes strong exception to the other’s work, leading to a heated discussion moderated by Roy Strickland, Director of the Master of Urban Design program at Taubman College.

Résumé:
In this volume Peter Calthorpe, renowned West Coast town planner and author, presents the case for New Urbanism, a movement that has enjoyed meteoric success since he co-founded it in the early 1990s. More utopian and civic than Everyday Urbanism, it promotes mixed-use and transit-oriented development and redevelopment of our cities, as well as walkability and socio-economic diversity. Less avant-garde than Post Urbanism, it embraces traditional urban and architectural scale and typologies. Lars Lerup, Dean of the School of Architecture at Rice University and author, responds with counter-arguments and case studies in a passionate but constructive exchange. Historian Robert Fishman, Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning at Taubman College and the author of several seminal books on urbanism, introduces and moderates the discussion, and offers a postscript. This compelling and insightful publication, with scores of images, features timely topics for architects, urban planners and designers, developers, government officials, landscape architects, students, and citizens interested in the fate of their urban environment.

Résumé:
Everyday Urbanism is one of three books in the "Michigan Debates on Urbanism" series that also features New Urbanism and Post Urbanism. Each book represents a distinct, inevitable, but still-emerging paradigm in contemporary urbanism, and is an elaboration on public debates held at the University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning during the winter of 2004. In this volume Margaret Crawford, co-author of "Everyday Urbanism" and Professor of Architecture at Harvard University, is the protagonist. She presents the case for an informal, bottom-up urbanism that celebrates and builds on everyday, ordinary life and reality, with little pretense about the possibility of a tidy or ideal built environment. Michael Speaks, Graduate Program Director at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and a widely published author, is the respondent. Rahul Mehrotra, Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Michigan and award-winning Bombay designer, introduces and moderates the exchange.

Résumé:
Part flight of fancy, part Star Trek set, part seemingly drug-induced delusion, Globus Cassus is a solution to a global dilemma, which remains the same size while housing an ever-increasing global population. The catalyst for the project as described by its creator, artist Christian Waldvogel: "The rapidly increasing population notice that their planet will soon be too small. The Earth is dismantled to provide building material. This is taken away to create Globus Cassus, a new, much bigger habitat, thought out from scratch." And so begins the story of converting the Earth into a gigantic hollow structure. The project, precisely worked out and described in detail, breaks through the bounds of architecture to continue the story of our great contemporary Utopias. Globus Cassus is the core of the Swiss contribution to the 9th Architecture Biennale in Venice, and this book examines the novel project through a series of drawings, diagrams, and photographs of three-dimensional models.

Büro Kiefer was founded in Berlin in 1989. A mathematical and aesthetical logic lies at the basis of every design. In recombing both, landscape design answers to the ever growing job responsabilities : architecture, urban development and region development oriente the landscape. Linked up with this challenge, but also with the cultural tradition of garden art, Büro Kiefer creates new hybrid from town and landscape. Their starting point is a contemporary undestanding of space. On the basis of an analysis of the space, the division of influences and ideas an recombining them, Büro Kiefer creates images referring to the future. Photography by Hans Joosten.

Résumé:
"Groundswell : constructing the contemporary landscape" presents 23 projects that reveal the surge of creativity and discussion surrounding the designed landscape in a broad, principally urban, international context. In the last 20 years, many significant new public spaces have been created for sites that have been reclaimed from conflict, environmental degradation, and abandonment. The projects, found throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, were selected for their design, and for their variety of contexts, materials, scale, and types of spaces. This fully illustrated volume includes an essay by Peter Reed, Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, that demonstrates how these innovative projects expand the definition of the modernist landscape while responding to a variety of conditions such as program, social function, and the transformation and reclamation previously industrial areas. The essay is followed by a full-color plate section featuring the selected projects. Catalogue entries for each project provide a succinct description of the site, its transformation, and design concepts illustrated by photographs, drawings, and models.
