Résumé:
Since the beginning of the century, the field of architecture has fervently turned its attention to documenting the contemporary urban condition. Every city has been examined as a repository of architectural concepts, scrutinized as an urban manifesto, and recorded as a series of found objects. "The Ordinary" articulates a potential genealogy for this practice and for the genre of books derived from it. Organized around conversations with the authors of three seminal texts that document the city—Denise Scott Brown's "Learning from Las Vegas" (1972), Rem Koolhaas's "Delirious New York" (1978), and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto's "Made in Tokyo" (2001)—this volume traces the history of these "books on cities" by examining the material they recorded, the findings they established, the arguments they advanced, and the projects they promoted. These conversations also question the assumptions underlying this practice and whether in its ubiquity it still remains a space of opportunity.

Résumé:
Is Landscape . . . ? surveys multiple and myriad definitions of landscape. Rather than seeking a singular or essential understanding of the term, the collection postulates that landscape might be better read in relation to its cognate terms across expanded disciplinary and professional fields. The publication pursues the potential of multiple provisional working definitions of landscape to both disturb and develop received understandings of landscape architecture. These definitions distinguish between landscape as representational medium, academic discipline, and professional identity. Beginning with an inquiry into the origins of the term itself, Is Landscape . . . ? features essays by a dozen leading voices shaping the contemporary reading of landscape as architecture and beyond.

Résumé:
Framed by the period of the Great Acceleration, these writings and projects represent a critical commentary on the state of architecture and urbanism and their causal role in global metamorphosis. On the eve of Plunz’s status as Emeritus at Columbia University, "New York global" bridges five decades of his pedagogical commitment to question the cannons of the design and urbanism fields and their relationship to the contemporary built environment. Global urbanization serves as a backdrop for a heightened consideration of the intermingling of housing, infrastructure, and pedagogy, as he negotiates the evolution of mainstream theory and praxis in architecture and planning. Through interviews, syllabi excerpts, essays, discussions, and projects, New York City is projected as a lens for understanding the potential for metropolises everywhere to serve as firewalls against dystopic social inequities and ecological adversity. In questioning the discourse surrounding urban research and action, Plunz engages with the primordial question of "urban" itself. This book is not a cautionary tale, but rather an assemblage of timestamped evidence toward understanding our current condition. Closely studying the very tools that have fostered today’s environmental and societal consequences, each segment contributes to understanding engagement with a post-accelerated future.

Résumé:
The future is not as far away as it might seem. What seemed a problem of the next generation now has become a problem of tomorrow. We are accelerating towards a future that is evermore present, guided by political and economic forces that seem unintelligible. Is this quick-paced intangible progression, the role of the architect is at stake. How can architecture keep up with society? Can it adapt quickly enough to frame it? And is so, what should that frame look like? These are some of the questions embedded in the premise of the three advanced studios presented in this book conducted by the three of Yale School of Architecture's Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professors in 2016 and 2017. Michael Young investigates the past from the future in "Aesthetics of Accelerationism: The Icelandic Infrastructure 2036-2056." Kersten Geers analyzes visions for agricultural ensembles for communal living in "Architecture Without Consent 19: Almost Classicism." And David Erdman looks to the potential of building on top of housing estates in Hong Kong in "Objects and Qualities." The book features interviews with the professors and essays on their specific studio topics.

Résumé:
The Gothic era produced some of the Western world’s most imposing structures, today icons of the European cityscape. Unlike buildings from the Renaissance onward, these medieval works are rarely discussed as the products of the ingenious, innovative contributions of individual architects. This book challenges that common perception by asserting the significant impact of draftsmanship on the development of the Gothic style from the twelfth to early sixteenth century. The rediscovery of a little-known corpus of architectural drawings and prints reveals the crucial role of drawings in the development of complex and visually appealing structures—from monumental stone cathedrals to small liturgical objects. "Gothic by design" includes surprising ties to contemporary concerns, showing how these works on paper functioned on and off the building site, established the basis for modern concepts of artistic identity and intellectual property, and provided evidence of the long afterlife of Gothic design strategies and their potential use today in sustainable architecture.

Architectural representation and the perspective hinge

Résumé:
Writing from inside the discipline of architecture, rather than from the more common extrapolations from the history of painting and philosophy, Alberto Pérez-Gómez and Louise Pelletier focus on the implications of the tool of perspective (and the hegemony of vision) for architectural representation. Their primary thesis is that tools of representation have a direct influence on the conceptual development of projects and generation of forms, and that there are alternatives to the reductive working methods of most contemporary practice. The book examines textual evidence across a broad historical period, concentrating on the relationship between drawing and architectural space in the period from the seventh century to the twentieth century. The book discusses such issues as optical correction and the nature of architectural drawing in selected treatises, revealing the complexity and potential contradiction inherent in any linear history of representation. The authors' ultimate aim is to probe the possibilities of the constructed world as a poetic translation, rather than prosaic transcription, of its representations.

Résumé:
Working collaboratively for the past ten years, Sabine Bitter and Helmut Weber focus on the field of architecture and urbanism, exploring the conditions of urban life in relation to the distribution of power. They investigate the possibility of visually interpreting and critically commenting on urban and architectural structures in terms of their potential for extensive social change. In "Caracas, Hecho en Venezuela" Bitter and Weber question the way in which the modernist promise of shaping the city and social space has been transformed due to shifts in urban, national, and global economies and politics. They examine how architecture, urban structures and entire territories in Caracas have been appropriated, "reterritorialized", and transformed by the people who live in them.

Design in the field of architecture is essentially an act of innovation, a continual striving to integrate practical, metaphorical and symbolic features into the designs using the technical means of today, and this is precisely where the computer can provide a fascinating new potential to create narrative space. Author, Maia Engeli, Assistant Professor for CAAD and architecture at the ETH, Zürich, has been active in this field for many years. Coming from the first generation of computer users, she has worked at Harvard University and the Media Lab at MIT and is at the forefront of research in this area.

Résumé:
In "Reinventing heritage," Park Associati—a Milan-based interdisciplinary collective of architects, designers, and researchers—explores the transformative potential of adaptive reuse in architecture as a key strategy to address environmental, social, and economic challenges. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, adaptive reuse champions the repurposing of existing structures to extend their lifecycle, reduce waste, and foster sustainable urban regeneration. Through a combination of theoretical insights and practical case studies, "Reinventing heritage" highlights the diverse ways in which adaptive reuse can revitalize cities and honor cultural heritage while creating innovative spaces serving contemporary demands.

Developed in 1989, the software Form*Z has become an important digital tool for architects when exploring three dimensional objects, in particular when designing spaces which have complex shapes and multiple curved surfaces, which do not adher to Cartesian geometry and cannot be depicted by traditional CAD programs. This book outlines the development, qualities and the future potential of this ingenious program, and the genuine contribution it has made to architectural design is illustrated by projects from Roto Architects, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Siegel Diamond Architecture, Stanley Saitowitz Office, Form 4 amongst others.
