Résumé:
A profound social change can be observed in the areas of mobility, work, and trade, as well as in the practice of faith, especially in cities. As a result, certain building typologies such as petrol stations, offices, shopping centers, cinemas, and churches are being used less, thus becoming increasingly obsolete and contributing to the obsolescence of the city. Three strategies must be considered for the efficient transformation of these structures: the conversion of existing architecture and the preservation of the gray energy they embody; the maximization of land use; and the strengthening of ecological functions to improve the urban microclimate and the quality of living space.

Résumé:
In The Possibility of an Absolute Architecture, Pier Vittorio Aureli proposes that a sharpened formal consciousness in architecture is a precondition for political, cultural, and social engagement with the city. Aureli revisits the work of four architects whose projects were advanced through the making of architectural form but whose concern was the city at large: Andrea Palladio, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Etienne-Louis Boullée, and Oswald Mathias Ungers. The work of these architects, Aureli argues, addressed the transformations of the modern city and its urban implications through the elaboration of specific and strategic architectural forms.

Résumé:
The city of Mumbai in India is undergoing dramatic transformations and the forces driving these changes in the city are forcing new modes of urbanism and urbanization to be realised. In particular, social, economic and political forces are aggressively pushing the evolution of an urban form in which local architects and planners are struggling to qualitatively intervene. This collection of essays and writings examine both the status quo in current developments while exploring stimulating projects that are emerging on the margins that provide hope for future directions of urbanisation in the city.

The relationship of art to work and the conditions of artistic production has long engaged many in the field of visual art. Work is a broad concept, the meaning of which has changed radically as a result of the social and technological transformations that have taken place over the past century. What, then, is “work” today and what is its relation to art? What is the position of the artist if “creativity” has become a commodity? How can the artist’s conditions of production be described, and what role can art and architecture play in societal change?

Résumé:
The Las Vegas Strip has impersonated the Wild West, with saloon doors and wagon wheels; it has decked itself out in midcentury modern sleekness. It has illuminated itself with twenty-story-high neon signs, then junked them. After that came Disney-like theme parks featuring castles and pirates, followed by replicas of Venetian canals, New York skyscrapers, and the Eiffel Tower. (It might be noted that forty-two million people visited Las Vegas in 2015—ten million more than visited the real Paris.) More recently, the Strip decided to get classy, with casinos designed by famous architects and zillion-dollar collections of art. Las Vegas became the “implosion capital of the world” as developers, driven by competition, got rid of the old to make way for the new—offering a non-metaphorical definition of “creative destruction.” In "The StripW, Stefan Al examines the many transformations of the Las Vegas Strip, arguing that they mirror transformations in America itself. The Strip is not, as popularly supposed, a display of architectural freaks but representative of architectural trends and a record of social, cultural, and economic change.
