In 1993, seven years after Spain joined the European Union, a radical transformation was initiated, and celebrated architects such as Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, and Frank O. Gehry were brought on board to design buildings that would serve as icons of the reinvented Bilbao. Swiss photographer Roger Wehrli documented this transformation, which was so successful that Bilbao has since become a model for former industrial centers throughout Europe.

Résumé:
North America's Great Lakes country has experienced centuries of upheaval. Its landscapes are utterly changed from what they were five hundred years ago. The region's superabundant fish and wildlife and its magnificent forests and prairies astonished European newcomers who called it an earthly paradise but then ushered in an era of disease, warfare, resource depletion, and land development that transformed it forever. ''The Once and Future Great Lakes Country'' is a history of environmental change in the Great Lakes region, looking as far back as the last ice age, and also reflecting on modern trajectories of change, many of them positive.

Three D - Graphic Spaces highlights a current trend in international graphic design: more and more visual designers are staging their compositions as three-dimensional scenarios, in order to turn them into posters, magazine covers, web sites, and animated films. The result is a host of suggestive new pictorial worlds that range from playfully arranged still lifes to room-filling installations. Edited by Gerrit Terstiege, editor-in-chief of the European design magazine "form", and designed by the prizewinning German studio Pixelgarten, this book offers an inspiring look at the various modeling techniques and means of expression involved.

Résumé:
This book explores connections between the modern city, its architecture, and its citizens, by questioning traditional conceptualizations of public and private. Rather than focusing purely on public spaces—such as streets, cafés, gardens, or department stores—or on the domestic sphere, the book investigates those spaces and practices that engage both the urban and the domestic, the public and the private. The legal, political and administrative frameworks of urban life are seen as constituting private individuals’ sense of self, in a wide range of European and world cities from Amsterdam and Barcelona to London and Chicago.

Résumé:
This artist’s book by Nico Joana Weber mounts an insightful and calculated photographic investigation into the dichotomy of rational (European) modernism in architecture versus the “irrational” proliferation of nature in tropical regions. Citing a range of historical and cultural references, from Le Corbusier’s visits to Argentina and Niemeyer’s Brazilian modernism, to the Amazonian expeditions of Lévi-Strauss, her vast collection of images points to how the fragile balance between architecture, the body, and vegetation inherent to the tropics shifts the separation between nature and culture so crucial to the Western perspective into the realm of the impossible.

Résumé:
Guido Molinari (1933-2004) was one of the greatest Canadian artists of the 20th century. A largely self-taught painter who went on to exhibit to critical acclaim for over 50 years, he maintained a fierce independence in the face of the many schools and movements that marked the early years of abstract art. Citing his greatest influences as the European Piet Mondrian and the American Jackson Pollock, Guido Molinari produced works that perhaps only a Montreal artist could have created at that time. This substantial monograph provides a first-ever overview of the artist and his work.
