Résumé:
This classic book, first published in 1983 and updated in 1990, helps designers to recognize and identify typefaces seen and used on an everyday basis, and also provides assistance with the process of typeface selection. It highlights the essential characteristics of over 700 typeface specimens, all fully cross-referenced to a comprehensive index.Typefaces are grouped according to specific design features and the typefinding process is by visual inspection and elimination. 'Earmark' or letter feature tables offer an alternative but companion method of identifying text typefaces, illustrating the more distinctive and unusual identifying features of letters. Each category of typeface is prefaced with an introduction by Phil Baines examining its historical background. The book also contains an eight-page section of fifty brief biographies of leading type designers.

Résumé:
As one of the world’s foremost urban designers, architect Terry Farrell has an acute awareness of the significance of place. Starting from his earliest years, as a child growing up in 1940s Manchester, Farrell’s imagination has been shaped and inspired by the many cities in which he has lived, visited and worked. This is Farrell’s story, embracing four decades of observation of our built environment. Farrell’s anecdotes, recollections and musings take a nomadic journey through time and space. A walk down 1950s Broadway and along 1960s Charlotte Street; a visit to the Alhambra; tutorials with Louis Kahn in Pennsylvania; the significance of bungalows; continual round-the-world tours – all are vibrantly related through words and pictures, many from Farrell’s personal photo collection. The book’s second section explores Farrell’s early projects, beginning with his student thesis, moving on to the Farrell/Grimshaw work and ending with Terry Farrell Partnership’s first schemes. Projects include the now listed Blackwall Tunnel Ventilation Towers and Park Road flats, the Student Hostel and Clifton Nurseries and housing and factory designs. Concluding the book are recollections from architects and critics casting an eye back over fifty years of design. This book is Terry Farrell’s strong statement for the humanizing of spaces and the need to nurture and protect the best of what the urban environment can offer

Résumé:
In the 1960s the French colonial regime detonated four atmospheric atomic bombs, thirteen underground nuclear bombs, and conducted other nuclear experiments in the Algerian Sahara. This secret, still-classified programme occurred during and after the Algerian War (1954–1962). Meticulously culled together from numerous sources by architectural historian Samia Henni, this publication’s wealth of materials documenting the violent history of France’s activities in the Algerian desert offers a rich repository for all those concerned with histories of nuclear weapons and engaged at the intersections of spatial, social, and environmental justice, as well as anticolonial archival practices.

Résumé:
The story of this book was built over time, through the many exchanges that took place between a photographer, the editors, graphic designers and authors. The publication is structured around five photographic series, each devoted to a particular building, site or architect: Château de Chambord in France, Dilmun Burial Mounds in Bahrain, Joze Plecnik’s buildings in and around Ljubljana, Rio Tinto in Spain, and Victor Horta’s Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. It is, especially, a book of (hi)stories in which the series by Maxime Delvaux are accompanied by texts. For these, various authors have been invited to react to the images with the idea of experimenting with the text: fiction, historical essay, round-table discussion, scientific text and photonovel. Graphic designers played with text and images to give them form. The reader is in turn invited to create possible alliances between images and texts. Like Maxime Delvaux’s photographic approach, these texts and their articulation with the photographs are specific to each subject, illustrating five ways of showing and telling about places near and far.

Résumé:
SO–IL is an architecture firm born in New York in 2008. Diverse in origin, their team of collaborators speaks a dozen languages and is informed by global narratives and perspectives. Both locally-rooted and nationless, they explore how the creation of environments and objects inspires lasting positive intellectual and societal engagement. Amant is an arts campus spread across three blocks in rapidly changing, industrial North Brooklyn. This cultural incubator functions both privately, and publicly, with artist studios, galleries, offices, storage, and a cafe. Rather than an inward-looking space isolated from its urban context, the collection of distributed volumes weaves itself into the fabric of the city. The mini-campus is a part of, benefits from, and contributes to the local community. Pockets of outdoor spaces, multiple entries, and openings cohabit the ground with other members of the neighbourhood.
