Résumé:
Perched on the edge of the Mediterranean, the city of Beirut was once a bustling site of modern architecture. Since the Lebanese Civil War, which broke out in 1975 and claimed over 120,000 lives before its cessation in 1990, many of Beirut’s modernist gems have lain abandoned or ruined. ''Beirut bereft'' profiles 57 of these structures as indicative of the wider fragmentation of Lebanon. Lebanese writer Rasha Salti and photographer Ziad Antar generated a visual, textual and cartographic vocabulary to profile the skeletons of office towers, hotels and apartment blocks that overlook the serene Mediterranean. One such building, the Murr Tower, has become something of an emblem of the destruction and lost hopes of Beirut. Begun in 1974 and incomplete at the beginning of the war, this Corbusier-inspired structure now looms over a city trying to find its way again.

As global rates of plant and animal extinctions mount, anxieties about the future of the earth’s ecosystems are fueling ever more ambitious efforts at conservation, which draw on Western scientific principles to manage species and biodiversity. In "Revenant ecologies," Audra Mitchell argues that these responses not only ignore but also magnify powerful forms of structural violence like colonialism, racism, genocide, extractivism, ableism, and heteronormativity, ultimately contributing to the destruction of unique life forms and ecosystems. Critiquing the Western discourse of global extinction and biodiversity through the lens of diverse Indigenous philosophies and other marginalized knowledge systems, "Revenant ecologies," promotes new ways of articulating the ethical enormity of global extinction. Mitchell offers an ambitious framework—(bio)plurality—that focuses on nurturing unique, irreplaceable worlds, relations, and ecosystems, aiming to transform global ecological–political relations, including through processes of land return and critically confronting discourses on "human extinction."

Résumé:
The style of the medieval period, which flows through the bloodstream of western culture, was vigorously re-established in post-Enlightenment England. This one-volume history of the Medieval Revival is the first coherent account of it, especially those aspects that are expressed and reflected in literature. The book focuses on the period 1760 to 1971, with an Epilogue on the reverberations of medievalism in the present day. The rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster, after its destruction by fire in 1834, re-established Gothic as the national style. But medieval imitation manifests itself wherever one cares to look: in literature, architecture, the applied arts, religion, politics, and even Hollywood. In this skilled dissection of the components of this pervasive cultural movement, Michael Alexander rejects the idea that medievalism was confined to the Victorian period, and overturns the suspicion that it is by its nature escapist.

In a time where all 44 high-rise towers in Melbourne are set to be demolished, displacing 10,000 residents, this book will help to tell the story of the environmental, social and economic cost of this destruction - and highlight the opportunities for investing in the public housing assets we already have. The book expands on the ''Retain, repair, reinvest'' feasibility and design proposal for the estate by non-for-profit architecture and design firm OFFICE.

Résumé:
If you enter an institutional mineralogical collection, you typically encounter glass cabinets organized by classification systems according to material properties. Yet, each mineral carries with it a history of extraction, destruction, (dis)possession, and global relations. "Transpositional geologies" localizes such collections as indices of the afterlife of colonialism and proposes an evolving political geology, reading mineral specimens as objects of "culture" rather than of "nature." Capturing his five-year artistic engagement and cultural collaboration in Namibia and Germany, Sascha Mikloweit brings together international voices from fields including anthropology, critical theory, geology, history, museum studies, philosophy, poetry, public administration—and the perspectives of boltwoodite, cerussite, or smithsonite. Rock by rock, this exquisitely designed volume invites us to engage with a progressively nuanced reading of geology’s history: its epistemic violence, omissions and racial regimes, and how the lasting residues of its colonial legacies continue to shape our present-day extractive realities.

Résumé:
In UKRAINE, photojournalist Eddy van Wessel documents a raw account of three years of war in Ukraine through (analogue) photography and firsthand testimonies. With decades of experience covering conflict zones, he focuses on what war means for those living through it – the soldiers on the front lines, civilians sheltering in devastated towns and cities, and those forced to flee. His images capture the visible destruction and the psychological and emotional toll of prolonged violence, making this book a visual and narrative testimony with a complex and layered depiction that is reflecting on the human cost of the largest war in Europe since World War II. It explores displacement, survival, and the boundaries of humanity in times of crisis. Where does humanity end and inhumanity begin? How do individuals maintain dignity and resilience under constant threat? What does survival look like when basic needs – and life itself – are no longer guaranteed?

Hélène Cixous’s powerful new book, masterfully translated by Peggy Kamuf, is a vivid journey through fire. From the ashes of wars, wildfires, and upheaval, Cixous traces a dramatic path across time—from the Second World War and the Nazi occupation of Oran to the European wildfires of 2022—weaving a rich, intimate narrative that merges history, autobiography, and myth. With her piercing, lyrical voice, Cixous confronts the human cost of destruction and upheaval, and asks a universal question: What do we carry with us when everything we know is falling to ashes? In ''Incinarration'' Cixous finds hope in the power of words, memory, and imagination to illuminate our darkest moments and redeem the future. As forests burn and regimes collapse, Cixous shows us how stories become a form of resistance—a way to remember, to bear testimony, and to find renewal in the face of oblivion.
