Résumé:
Walter Pfeiffer, whose work in the 1970s and 1980s prefigured many of the decisive developments in contemporary art today, is a classic artist's artist. Famous and beloved among art aficionados, Pfeiffer almost has been forgotten by the public at large. Now it's time to discover him, as his images seem more timely than ever. "Welcome Aboard! Photographs 1980 -- 2000" is both a monograph on Pfeiffer's photographic work and an artist's book, a photo-novel all of its own. Pfeiffer takes you on a long trip from suburban bliss to the horse race at Ascot, from wind-swept beaches to majestic mountaintops. Pfeiffer knows our dreams and artfully plays with them. In his still-lifes, landscapes, and portraits of beautiful boys and mischievous women, Pfeiffer celebrates his quest for beauty and glamour with sophistication, irony, and wit. Pfeiffer leads you into a world between reality and reverie, snapshot and mise-en-scène. The book is a photo album from Arcadia. With simple means Pfeiffer creates intelligent and classic images of beauty and bliss, imbued with a wistful awareness of their artifice. Stylish, suggestive, and erotic, his images are an encyclopedia of desire.

Résumé:
Shek Kip Mei was the first public housing estate development in Hong Kong built by the British colonial government in 1954. The resettlement project was an immediate response to the need for temporary relief as a result of the massive fire that destroyed the Shek Kip Mei squatter area on Christmas Eve 1953, when over 53,000 Chinese immigrants lost their makeshift homes overnight. This carefully designed book reproduces and explains the documentation of the aerea made by Governor Sir Alexander Grantham in 1954 to the British Government on the Great Fire. It includes a letter of appeal to the Governor, statistics about the residents, but abovw all it shows in 128, mostly full page b/w photographs, the appartments of the complex and their habitants.

Résumé:
No creature on earth is better at pretending than we humans. The title of this book is a way of saying that our daily life is nothing other than a show played out in our minds. We have a talent for creating a fantasy world. Luckily for us. He who is unable to daydream becomes hopelessly depressed. Our talent for simulating is so strong that we are even able to pretend that we exist. We simulate a first-person form, an ’I’. In The Great Pretender, kinetic artist Theo Jansen shows that the ’I’ we envision is a tool in our evolution. We need this tool to be selfish. There can be no selfishness without the I-fantasy. Since 1990 Theo Jansen has been engaged in creating new forms of life: beach animals. These are not made of protein like the existing life-forms but from another basic stuff, yellow plastic tubing. Skeletons made from these tubes are able to walk. They get their energy from the wind, so they don’t have to eat like regular animals. They evolved over many generations, becoming increasingly adept at surviving storms and and water from the sea. Theo Jansen’s ultimate wish is to release herds of these animals on the shore. In redoing the Creation, so to speak, he hopes to become wiser in his dealings with the existing nature by encountering problems the Real Creator had to face. The Great Pretender is a testimonial to his experiences as God. It’s not easy being God; there are plenty of disappointments along the way. But on the few occasions that things work out, being God is the most wonderful thing in the world. Includes a companiond DVD of beach animal videos.

Résumé:
The street is the workplace of the artist Paulien Oltheten (b. Nijmegen, 1982). Seemingly in passing, she seeks out precisely those moments when there is contact between people, things and the public space with her still and moving viewfinders. She also has a remarkable eye for the small and the subtle: her photos are often profoundly touching. Street Theory brings together about a hundred photos, video stills and drawings by Oltheten, each of which testifies to how we use, move through, sit, lounge and behave in the public domain, and above all how we relate to other people and objects. Oltheten often annotates these striking images and intriguing situations with handwritten notes that become an integral part of the whole, adding a new, narrative layer of meaning.

Résumé:
As we spend our days increasingly glued to our computers and handheld devices, rapidly tapping keywords into Google, cutting and pasting Word docs and texting urgently truncated messages, it is becoming increasingly rare to pen anything by hand. No wonder hand-written fonts are all the rage in the world of graphic design. Writing, like drawing, has become an endangered act. Drawings on Text--which explores the idea that when a hand-written note is illegible, it becomes a drawing--is the third book in this series, edited by Dutch artist Serge Onnen. The handwritten can take many forms, from an illegibly scrawled letter to initials carved into a tree with a knife. A catholic selection of the hand-written-as-drawing is included in this innovative volume, which was first published in Zing magazine. Included are pieces by John Cage, Napoleon Bonaparte, Olav Westphalen, Roland Barthes, Gustave Flaubert and Victor Hugo, among others.
