Résumé:
When we view photographs of unfurnished interiors, what we see looks almost nothing like the homes we ultimately inhabit: blank, labyrinthine spaces, featureless rooms with walls that meet at odd angles and exits that lead nowhere. These strange and seamless spaces make up a peculiar genre of representation: views of the unfurnished interior in architects’ online portfolios. 'House Tour' which accompanied Switzerland’s award-winning contribution to the 2018 International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, is a playful yet thought-provoking celebration of this genre that is both familiar and not. In a series of essays, the contributors—anthropologists, art and architectural historians, and architectural theorists—consider the ubiquitous contemporary apartment, the void we inhabit with its standard measurements that reflect contemporary architecture’s key constraints. A striking visual journey, House Tour takes as its starting point almost three hundred photographs of such unfurnished interiors designed by leading Swiss architecture firms.

Résumé:
The creation of seamless illusion remains a driving tenet of Hollywood cinema. In order to preserve this illusion, it is crucial that there are no jarring disruptions of cinematic space and time. This preservation of order is called continuity, and it has been the focus of John Divola's photographic work for the past several years, as beautifully represented in this striking book. Divola takes the original still photographs he has collected of Warner Bros. film sets from the 1930s, which were used to maintain continuity, and creates haunting installations of fictive reality. Divided into subject categories such as "Hallways" and "Broken Furniture and Evidence of Aggression," these images possess a glorious beauty, made possible by the use of 8 x 10 negatives, while being grounded in an intelligence found in the best of conceptual art. Features an elucidating essay by the noted film writer and critic Edward Dimendberg.

Résumé:
From the time of its invention, photography has enabled artists not only to capture the world around them but also to create worlds of their own. "Utopia/Dystopia" investigates how artists from the late 19th century to the present have used photographic fragments or techniques to represent political, social, or cultural states of utopia or dystopia. Artists have employed a number of strategies to this end, such as cutting, fragmenting, and puncturing images as well as reassembling those culled from ready-made materials or giving a subject multiple exposures. The resulting photographs, photocollages, photomontages, and other creations question the validity of seamless pictorial images, and attempt to dismantle the notion of photography as an objective medium. This publication features approximately forty-five exemplary works by artists such as Herbert Bayer, John Heartfield, Hannah Hoch, Arata Isozaki, El Lissitzky, Carter Mull, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Vik Muniz, Man Ray, Okanoue Toshiko, and many others.

Résumé:
In northwest Russia, in a small village called Alekhovshchina, Nadia Sablin's aunts spend the warmer months together in the family home and live as the family has always lived chopping wood to heat the house, bringing water from the well, planting potatoes, and making their own clothes. Sablin's lyrical and evocative photographs, taken over seven summers, capture the small details and daily rituals of her aunts surprisingly colorful and dreamlike days, taking us not only to another country but to another time. Alevtina and Ludmila, now in their seventies, seem both old and young, as if time itself was as seamless and cyclical as their routines working on puzzles, sewing curtains, tatting lace, picking berries, repairing fences and as full of the same subtle mysteries. Sablin collaborated with her aunts to recreate scenes she remembered from her childhood and to make new images of the patterns of their days. In these photographs, Sablin combines observation and invention, biography and autobiography, to tell the stories of her aunts life together, and in the process, quilts together a thoughtful meditation on memory, aging, and belonging.

Résumé:
"Regeneration" offers a visionary new approach to climate change, one that weaves justice, climate, biodiversity, equity, and human dignity into a seamless tapestry of action, policy, and transformation that can end the climate crisis in one generation. It is the first book to describe and define the burgeoning regeneration movement spreading rapidly throughout the world. "Regeneration" describes how an inclusive movement can engage the majority of humanity to save the world from the threat of global warming, with climate solutions that directly serve our children, the poor, and the excluded. This means we must address current human needs, not future existential threats, real as they are, with initiatives that include but go well beyond solar, electric vehicles, and tree planting to include such solutions as the fifteen-minute city, bioregions, azolla fern, food localization, fire ecology, decommodification, forests as farms, and the number one solution for the world: electrifying everything. Paul Hawken and the nonprofit Regeneration Organization are launching a series of initiatives to accompany the book, including a streaming video series, curriculum, podcasts, teaching videos, and climate action software. "Regeneration" is the inspiring and necessary guide to inform the rapidly spreading climate movement.

Résumé:
In 1856, the English photographer Francis Frith set out on the first of three tours of Egypt and the Holy Lands. Traveling up the Nile and then on to the Sinai, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, Frith systematically crafted exquisite pictures of ruins, landscapes, and legendary sites. He then published his views in England and America in a variety of formats, becoming something of a celebrity in photographic circles. This book, the first to place Frith's Egyptian and Levantine images in cultural context, reveals the distinct meanings these ostensibly "topographic" pictures held for the photographer and his Victorian audience. A Quaker by birth and an entrepreneur by nature, Frith brought to his photographic projects a sense of mission: to revive and confirm the stories of the Bible, while offering the region to armchair travelers as a seamless Oriental milieu of Romantic reverie. Francis Frith in Egypt and Palestine narrates the political, intellectual, and social concerns that make Frith representative of England's encounter with the East in the nineteenth century. Historian of photography Douglas R. Nickel brings a sophisticated interdisciplinary approach to bear on the subject in order to expose the complexity of Frith's image-making, setting the photographs against a Victorian backdrop of religious debate, imperialist thought, Romantic philosophy, and Pre-Raphaelite aesthetics.

Résumé:
In an age of diminishing natural resources, architects and their clients need to know about an environmentally sustainable alternative to new construction: new life for old buildings. This book presents six case-study buildings, each more than a generation old, that were on the brink of oblivion. Mitchell Giurgola Architects worked closely with the client to determine how each project could be salvaged by incorporating updated program elements to serve a new generation of users. All six case studies present in detail how each project is analyzed, from its energy use and curtain-wall performance to its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and structural stability. The buildings often expand in size, with a seamless melding of new and old. Contemporary curtain walls not only improve building performance, but also lend a fresh aesthetic appeal. The results are born-again buildings created for a fraction of the cost and consuming far fewer materials than, a new facility built from scratch. Today, our cities and suburbs are peppered with buildings of the same era as those profiled here that are on the brink of failure and are excellent candidates for rebirth. Mitchell Giurgola documents a new, more sustainable approach to design and construction that builds on the past, and makes the old better than new.

Résumé:
In "The Zone," Justinien Tribillon takes the reader on a tour of an eponymous Parisian hinterland. The site of dreams and nightmares, from Van Gogh’s paintings to the cinematic violence of La Haine, the Zone, so often misunderstood, is the key to understanding today’s Paris, and even France itself. Originally the site of defensive walls, alongside which mushroomed makeshift housing, allotments, and dancehalls in the nineteenth century, the Zone has performed many functions and been a place of contention for two centuries. Dismantled in the 1920s, the fortifications were first replaced with gardens, stadia and homes. After the war came the Boulevard Périphérique, a ring road promising seamless travel in a futuristic car-centric Paris. With the ring road came new dreams of modernity in reinvented suburbs: new towns, high-rise architecture and social housing built at record speed. Yesterday’s Paris made way for tomorrow’s banlieue. But the metropolitan dream was never realised. The Zone became a symbol of division: between inner and outer cities; between the bourgeois centre and the working-class immigrant outskirts; between ‘us’ and ‘them’. The Zone, both a physical space and a powerful myth, came to crystallise the social, spatial and ethno-racial differences between Paris and the banlieue.

Résumé:
"Asymptote", an award-winning New York City-based architectural firm, expands the boundaries of traditional practice with work that ranges from buildings and urban design to computer-generated environments. Recognized internationally as both cutting-edge architects and virtual-reality artists, Asymptote partners Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid have designed and written the first book to document their ‘real world’ (as opposed to virtual) projects completed since 1995. It includes work as diverse as a trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange; a multimedia research park in Kyoto, Japan; a modular furniture system for Knoll; and a centre for art and technology for the Guggenheim Museum in Soho, New York. Rashid and Couture’s work is intriguing because it draws inspiration from a wide range of sources not traditionally associated with architecture – among them the design of airline interiors, sporting equipment, and organic systems like seashells and honeycombs; and various means of communicating and disseminating information. Asymptote presents a seamless trajectory of projects organized in a non-linear fashion and illustrated with installation photographs, collaged photographs, and computer-generated diagrams and environments. The projects are interspersed with descriptive text and the speculative writing that Asymptote is known for. Both partners combine architectural practice with teaching, Rashid at Columbia University and Couture at Columbia and Parsons School of Design.
